Someone By My Side (sequel to My Life With Green Day), chapter 7

Recap:

"You guys better not have anything planned for tonight," Billie warned, looking directly at me.

He knew I was a shitty liar. He was putting me on the spot. 'Think Courtney think,' I thought vigorously.

"Bye Billie," Maggie called as she dragged me upstairs with her and the others.

We were going to plan for the night that 'wasn't going to happen.'

"That pretty much means they do have something planned tonight," Billie muttered to himself as he clucked his tongue.

The door bell rang and he answered it.

"I'm back!"
End of Recap

"What are you doing here," Billie asked in complete shock.

"It's your birthday silly," They said in unison.

"I don't even know who the fuck you are but I do know you," Billie stated nonchalantly as he shook his head.

"Get out! Both of you," he barked suddenly, causing both of them jump a foot in the air.

"I will be back tonight! We both will be," she said as she herded the other woman out. "I will be back," she continued to cackle to herself over and over again.

"Holy shit! Gotta keep cool! Can't let Courtney find out," Billie whispered as he paced the room frantically.

"Who was it Billie," I asked softly as I came down the stairs.

"Uh... . Wrong house," Billie covered quickly.

You know how I said Billie could tell when I was lying? Well I could tell he was lying to me and it hurt he wasn't telling me what was bothering him so much.

"Okay... um are you alright," I asked worriedly.

"What is with the questions all of a sudden? Are you saying you don't trust me," he blew up all of a sudden.

I looked at him oddly for a second, trying to figure out what was so wrong. My eyes widened when I realized what was going on.

"Billie, breathe," I whispered, taking a cautious step toward him.

"I am fine! I can breathe," he snapped.

"No you are about to have a panic attack," I continued coming to him and whispering.

"Okay I'm fine," he said also whispering. "Something came to mind and I think I'm having a nervous break down."

He reached out and hugged me tightly to him.

'What could be so bad that he almost had a panic attack,' I thought suspiciously.

I really wanted to know but I wasn't going to pry.

"I think you should just go lie down or something," I suggested.

I was really going to go make more plans for tonight.

"No I just need to get out for a second," he said as he grabbed his car keys and his jacket.

"Billie, be safe please," I said, hesitant to let him go.

"I will," he reassured.

Little did I know, I wasn't going to be seeing him anytime soon.

***Upstairs***

"Billie still downstairs right," Maggie asked as I rushed into the room.

"No dipshit that's why he is standing right behind her," Brittany shot sarcastically.

"He he he... bitch," Maggie muttered.

Ignoring their fighting, I continued looking for my keys.

"You guys, something is seriously wrong with Billie. He almost had a panic attack downstairs."

That stopped everyone from their arguing. They stared at me in disbelief and shock.

"Is he still downstairs," Mike asked, eyeing me worriedly.

"No! He just up and left right after," I exclaimed, still looking for my jacket and my damn keys.

"Where... You are not going after him are you," Mike asked.

I didn't answer him, because I knew I was just going to get lectured about how Billie needed his 'personal space' whenever he had a panic attack.

This was different though.

I knew in some way, shape, or form, I was involved in this.

"Where the fuck are my keys," I sighed in frustration.

I could feel my toes starting to tap to add to my annoyance.

"Your keys are probably in the last place you'd look Blondie," Tre said insignificantly.

I had some how acquired that annoying nickname from him and I couldn't seem to shake it.

I grumbled to myself as I turned to him, forcing a smile.

"And where would that be Mr. Cool," I asked nicely, forcing a smile.

'I need to get moving or I'm never going to find him,' I thought as Tre took his time to answer me.

"The key hook," Tre remarked.

I rolled my eyes. 'It's not going to be... damn,' I thought as the glint of the silver hit the light.

"Okay I'm gone," I called as I started to race from the room.

"Be careful," someone shouted back.

I climbed into my old car and went in search of Billie Joe.

***Back at my house***

It was an eerie silence that had befallen on the four people in my room.

"Do you think Courtney is okay," Maggie asked, almost robotically.

Tre opened his mouth to say something smart but then shut it, realizing this was one of those times to be serious.

"And Billie?"

No one knew what to say because she had said exactly what was on everyone else's mind.

***Billie Joe***

"Where are you two," Billie whispered to himself as he went in search of the two women.

He wasn't watching the color of the light as he merged onto the highway when it happened... CRASH!

***Me***

"Come on traffic, move," I mumbled to myself.

Do you notice I have absolutely no patience? Suddenly, a cop appeared out of nowhere and was informing people on what happened up ahead. Finally he reached me.

"Car accident, male, white, black hair, mid 30's. Got smashed by a semi truck when he ran a red light. He is expected to live but is in critical condition," The officer listed as if after saying it the first million times, it just doesn't matter anymore.

He started to walk away but I quickly stopped him to ask, "Please tell me he wasn't driving a black BMW!"

"Actually miss, he was. Do you know him?"

'Well no fucking duh,' I thought as I nodded sadly.

"Well I can get to a cop car and take you to the hospital he was taken to," The officer supplied.

I pocketed my car keys and followed the cop (whose name turned out to be Frank) to a car that instantly sped me off to Billie's hospital.

***Back at my house***

"I got it," Brittany called to the others as she bounded down the stairs towards the phone.

"Hello?" She heard my frantic yelps for Mike and that's all she understood.

"Mike! Phone!" She tossed the phone onto the couch and headed up stairs.

"Hello? Wait... slow down Courtney! What happened to Billie Joe," Mike shouted over my incoherent babbling.

By know, the entire household had come downstairs to see what all the yelling was about. Mike's face suddenly went blank and he dropped his voice.

"We will be there in a minute Courtney," he said, almost whispered.

He hung up and pushed everyone out the door. No one argued or asked what was going on; they knew something was really wrong.

***Hospital***

I was trying my hardest to not annoy every doctor that came out of Billie's room. I'd either ask what was happening or burst out in tears, expecting the worst.

I kept doing this until one nurse said I could go see him. I walked up boldly to his room door the stopped short.

"Is he conscious," I asked slowly, hopefully withering away some time until Mike got there.

The nurse looked annoyed with my question.

"He is under heavy medication," she replied as if I should have known that.

I took a step towards the door again and looked back and said "Is that a yes or no?"

"It's a no!" She slammed her packet of papers down, obviously frustrated with me.

'Well fuck you too then,' I thought bitterly as I forced a smile and gave an appreciative nod.

I put my hand on the door handle, but suddenly lost all my courage. I didn't want to see Billie all bruised and battered.

'I'll just wait for the others to get her,' I though to myself calmly.

"Courtney!"

'Damn,' I thought as I heard Tre's voice somewhere behind me.

"Shhh," one nurse tried to quiet Tre. Tre took offense to this very much.

"Bitch, don't 'shhh' me," Tre warned as he placed a hand on his protruding hip.

"We don't need your vulgarity sir," She shot back as she slinked back to her desk.

"Yeah... . vulgarity my ass," Tre muttered as he walked up to me. "You going in?"

"Be my guest," I suggested as I stepped away from the door.

***Eventually***

I was the only one who hadn't seen Billie. Maggie had just come out.

'Okay now or... well let's just say now,' I thought as I entered Billie's brightly lit room.

For some odd reason, I kept feeling like it was my fault he was here.

'I shouldn't have let him go,' I thought sullenly.

I walked over to an empty chair by his bed, sliding my hand into his, and cried my heart out.

***Lobby***

"How do you think Courtney and Billie are doing," Maggie asked quietly, minutes after an uncomfortable silence had filled the room.

Again, she had asked what everyone else had on their mind.

***Billie Joe and I***

"Billie, you have to be okay! You have to make it through this for me," I whispered, my throat sore and dry from crying.

"Good Morning sunshine," Billie whispered as he slid his hand from mine.

I pulled my heavy head up to make sure I was delirious .

"Oh my god Billie! Are you alright," I squealed, refraining from hugging him.

He laughed lightly at my sudden outburst.

"Other then a killer headache, I'm fine," he said, closing his eyes again. "Some birthday, huh?"

He paused again and opened his eyes.

"I don't even remember what happened."

"You ran a red light and a semi hit you," I said angrily, feeling my temper flare again. "The little fucker is in the next room for minor cuts and bruises."

"Hey, it's not his fault. I ran the red light," he reminded me.

"True but they give you breaks for a fucking reason," I replied bitterly, still fuming.

"Anyway, let me go tell the others you're up."

I looked at him for approval but he had fallen asleep.
