Scattered, chapter 27

Week Later Dawna and Matt

"So your eye is looking a bit better."
"Yah I guess so," Dawna said while watching tv.
"You know I really didn't mean to hit you," Matt sat down beside Dawna and put his arm around her.
"Mhmm sure," Dawna moved away from Matt's arm.
"I know you don't believe me but why don't you go look in the bed room I got you something."
"Matt..."
"Just go." Matt's voice got a bit deeper, and Dawna could see he was getting impeccant.
"Alright." Dawna got up and made her way to the bedroom, to find a teddy bear, and some flowers lying on the bed.
"Wow thanks." Dawna picked up the teddy bear, knowing that in about a week or two there would be another gift waiting on the bed for her.
"So, do you like it?"
"Yes." Dawna had learned a long time ago to say she liked everything that Matt gave her, for her own good.
"Good." Matt kissed Dawna, and pulled her in close.
"Uh, no Matt I'm felling sick I'm not up for anything right now."
"Sure, you're always felling sick." Matt rolled his eyes, and pushed Dawna away from him.
"Matt I'm really sick, why do you think I was lying down on the sofa."
"Don't get mouthy...for all I know you were laying on the sofa c'ause your lazy, and don't know how to do anything else."
"Pardon me, I clean this house everyday and make dinner for you."
"And I work, do you want and award for doing what's expected of you?"
"Expected of me? I don't have to clean up after you, or make you dinner"
"Yah I guess not, but I am sure you don't wanna find out what's gonna happen the day I do come home, and you don't have dinner made... do you?
"Oh I'm scared." Dawna spoke before thinking."
"You better be! Now get out of my way." Matt pushed Dawna into the wall and left the bedroom, while Dawna fell to the ground, not bothering to say anything back to Matt in fear of what he might do next.

About four days later, Dawna could see that Matt, was getting violent again, this time more then normal. Scared she called Billie with out knowing who else to call.

"Hello?" Billie picked up the phone.
"Hi, Billie it's me Dawna, I know you don't wanna talk to me but please listen before you hang up."
"Why should I listen to you? You don't listen to me."
"What? I don't have much time Matt's gonna get home soon, and see that I'm talking to you!"
"What, Matt doesn't know you're talking to me, what's going on?"
"It is a long story; I'll tell you if you come pick me up."
"Pick you up, Dawna what's goin on?"
"Billie, please!" Billie could hear the fear and frustration in Dawna's voice.
"I can't explain right now, Matt should be home soon."
"Dawna I'm not coming down there unless you give me a good reason."

"Dawna who are you talking to!" Matt walked into the living room.
"Thanks a lot." Dawna took a deep breath and hung up the phone.
"Hello?" Billie waited for an answer but there was noting.

"So are you gonna tell me who you were talking to?"
"No don't worry about it." Dawna walked to the bathroom.
"Do not tell me not to worry about it. Should I pick up the phone and hit redial?"
"No don't, just forget about it."
"No." Matt when back into the living room and picked up the phone.
"Why are you doin this? There's no need for it." Dawna followed Matt into the living room.
"Just tell me who you called and I'll put the phone down."
"Fine I called my mother, is that ok?"
"Your mother, you gotta be kiddin you've never called you mother."
"While, I did today. It's her birthday."
"Lies!"
"What?"
"I know when your mothers birthday is, remember, I got her a gift. Her birthday is sometime in November that's a week away!" Matt hit the redial button on the phone.
"Fine I'll tell you if you just hang up the phone."
"No, I gave you a chance you blew it. Oh and by the way is ringing."
Dawna went to hang up the phone when Matt pushed her to the ground.

"Hello?"
"Hi, is Sandy there? Matt asked.
"No, sorry this is Billie, there's no one here by the name of Sandy?"
"Oh I'm sorry I must have hit the wrong number."
"It's ok."
"Alright while bye." Matt hung up the phone.
"What did I tell you about calling him?" Matt picked Dawna off the ground.
"Not to." Dawna backed away from Matt like a scared puppy.
"So what do you do, call him anyways?"
"I was calling to see if I left something there." Dawna backed into the wall, with nowhere else to go.
Matt just shook his head. "Dawna you were never good at lying, so don't try, now tell me why did you call him?"
"I told you." Matt hit Dawna.
"You gonna tell me now?"
"I did, I called to see if I left something there."
"Something what's that something?"
"My necklace."
"What? You don't have a necklace."
"How would you know?"
"Dawna stop lying!"
"I'm not!" Dawna tried to say with a straight face, like Matt had said Dawna was never good at lying, and he always knew when she was."
"Gee Dawna I don't wanna hit you aging, but I know you're lying."
"I'm not!"
"Don't you raise you voice at me!" Matt hit Dawna across the face.
"Don't fuckin' touch me!" Dawna held her face, and her breath knowing that she should not have said anything.
"Touch you, like this?" Matt grabbed Dawna's arms, as tight as he could.
Dawna flinched at his touch, not saying anything no matter how much harder Matt held on to her arms.
"Huh Dawna? Do you not like when I hold your arms like this?" Matt could see the pain in Dawna's face.
"No..." Dawna managed to get out with out screaming.
"While?"
"STOP!" Dawna couldn't hold it in any longer.
"Stop? While I'll stop if you stop lying to me."
"Fine ok, I called 'cause I wanted to see him." Dawna knew she was still lying, but she knew that Matt would go for that.
"I knew it." Matt let go of Dawna's arms. "I want you to call him back!"
"And say what?"
"That you're leaving town and never coming back again."
"No why that is stupid, what are you four!"
"Call him!"
"No! He told me he never wanted to talk to me again! He has a girlfriend her name is Marine."
"Oh really?"
"Yah!"
"Call him anyways!"
"No Matt."
"Don't talk back to me just do it!" Matt hit Dawna again.
"No!" This time Dawna had lost it, she was sick of being a punching bag, Dawna sung back in hit Matt in the nose.
"You didn't." Matt held his nose.
"I did!" Dawna felt brave for a little.
"Oh, you know what, that was a mistake." Matt started to hit Dawna over and over again, Dawna got Matt back a couple times making him back off, allowing herself to run into the bathroom, locking the door behind her.
"Dawna get out of there!" Matt hammered on the door, making it look like it was about to fall in.

"You really think I'm gonna come out there so you can beat on me some more?" Dawna looked in the mirror, to see she had a bloody noise, another black eye, and a few hand marks across her face. When Dawna lifted up the sleeves of her shirt, she could see where Matt had been holding her arms there was big burse on each of them, marking every one of his fingers, Dawna's ribs also hurt from Matt punching her body then just her face like normal. Just touching them made Dawna flinch with pain. This had been the worst that Matt had ever beat Dawna, but looking in the mirror she knew it wouldn't have been half as bad, if she wouldn't have hit Matt back, or even talked back.

"Alright Dawna I'm sorry please come out?" Matt stopped hitting the door.
Dawna did not say anything she just turned on the sink and washed her face. Over the water, Dawna could hear Matt apologizing, and trying to convince her to come out of the bathroom, soon after Matt had no response from Dawna, he left the bathroom door, to do something else. Once Dawna knew he was gone for sure, she jumped into the shower, giving Matt a little bit longer to cool down.

Once Dawna left the bathroom, and got dressed, she found Matt sitting outside.

"Dawna come out here." Matt had seen her walk by the window.
"Ok hold on." Dawna grabbed the blanket of the couch and went out to sit beside Matt.
Matt took a deep breath and looked over at Dawna. "I'm sorry I over reacted."
Dawna looked back at Matt, who also had a black eye.
"Matt, is that all you can say is I'm sorry. Look at my arms, look at my face! You did this to me, and all you can say is sorry?"
"I know I know, I'll get you something tomorrow."
"As much as you think that makes everything better, it doesn't."
"While fine then I won't get you anything, but I promise you I'll never hurt you like this again, if you don't give me a reason too."
Dawna looked at Matt who seemed to be getting mad again.
"Mhmm."
"Now give me a hug." Dawna tried to lean over but it hurt her body too much to move. "Ouch." Dawna said when Matt put his arms around her torso.
"Are you ok?"
"Yah, I should be find don't worry about it. How is your eye?" Dawna asked trying to change the subject.
"It's not as bad as yours, that all I know, and again I'm really sorry."
"Mhmm."
"Is that all you can say?"
"No that's all I wanna say. Anyways its cold I'm goin inside."
"Alright I'll be right in."

When Matt came in he found Dawna in the kitchen cleaning up the dishes from dinner.
"Hey go sit down; you can finish the dishes tomorrow."
"Oh thanks."
"Hey would you mind if I went out with the guys tonight?"
"Yah, I don't care, but what are you gonna tell them about your eye?"
"I do not know I will think of something. I'm gonna be out late so don't wait up for me alright sweet heart."
"Yah, ok."
Matt gave Dawna a kiss got his jacket and shoes on and left. Once Matt had left Dawna debated with herself if she should leave the house or not, but in the end she though it would be a better idea not to be there when Matt came home drunk. So she went and got dressed into a long sleeved shirt and some jeans, and grabbed her purse and some sunglass before leaving the house. About 20 minutes later, Dawna arrived at Billie's house and started to knock on the door. When he opened the door he just looked at Dawna, and with out saying anything he was about to close the door, but Dawna started to yell.

"Hey fuckin' beat me Billie, he fuckin' beat me!" Dawna yelled over and over.
"Ok, ok?" Billie looked around and seen that people were starting to stare.
"He beat me up! Look at me!" Dawna took of her sun glasses.
"Alight ok, come inside people are starting to stare."
"I don't care!"
"Dawna get inside or I'm closing the door."
"Go ahead close the door, I'll just tell the people you beat me up, and now your locking me out of the house!"
"These people just seen you come too my door."
"The police didn't."
"Whatever Dawna, just come in its getting cold out and your hair is wet." Billie noticed when he turned on the porch light.
"Fine but I'm not done."
"I didn't think so." Billie said under his breath. "Now why don't you tell me what happened. Comely."
"He beat me!" Dawna said every word slowly.
"Who did?"
"Come Billie it's not time to play stupid." Dawna reached into her peruse.
"No really, who did it? Was it Matt?"
"Yes Billie, and you could have prevented it all!" Dawna yelled.
"What how!"
"When I called you, asking you to pick me up, you could have came."
"While, I guess your right but he still would have got mad when you got home."
"That not the point!" Dawna pulled something out of her peruse.
"What is that?"
"What does it look like?" Dawna pointed a small handgun at her head.
"Oh come on Dawna take that away from your head, there's no need to kill yourself over this."
"Ok then...I'll kill you." Dawna sifted the gun over to Billie.
"You don't wanna do that either." Billie's eyes widened, and took a step towards Dawna hoping he could get close enough to take the gun from her.
"Don't you step any closer to me!" Dawna started to shake, and the gun became unsteady in her hand.
"All right, I wont, but please, tell me what kill me is gonna do for you?"
"I don't know, but you should have came and picked me up!"
"Ok, yah I guess I should have I'm sorry."
"Sure you are, your just saying this cause I am holding you at gunpoint."
"Maybe, or maybe not, but I know you really don't wanna kill me."
"Oh really what makes you think that?"
"While for one, I have taken a few steps towards you, and you have not said anything. Two your finger is no where near the trigger, and you can't even stop shaking long enough to hold the gun at me right."

"Yah your right, maybe I don't wanna kill you." Dawna tighten her grip on the gun and brought her finger to the trigger, and pointed the gun back at her head. "Maybe I wanna kill myself in front of you, so you will never forget me. There will always be some kind of memories of me in you head if you'd like it or not.
"Dawna I do not want to remember you every time I look at my floor or see a gun raised. I do not wanna have to remember having to see you blow your head off over something like this. I wanna remember the good things." Dawna looked into Billie's eyes, and seen he really meant what he was saying. But she still stood there with the gun to her head.

"Come on Dawna, you know you do not want to end your life like this. I know you wanna have a family of your own one day, right." Billie took a slow step towards Dawna, with out her noticing.
"Yah." Dawna moved her finger away from the trigger, but still healed the gun to her head.
"And you still haven't got that little pet dog that will run to you everyday when you come home from work, have you?" Billie was trying to think, back when he and Dawna had a serious talk with out it breaking out into a fight.
"No."
"That's right, so why don't you hand me the gun, and we'll forget about this ever happening." Billie reached out his hand.
"No!" Dawna's grip tightened on the gun again.
"Dawna please give me the gun."
"No."
"Give me the goddamn gun. This won't solve anything." Billie was sick of pleading with her.
"I'm not gonna give you the gun!"
"Just listen to me and give me the gun!"
"No, you listen to me. I'm sick of being beat up ever other week, for absolutely nothing, I'm sick of no one helping me until I get hurt. I've told you before what Matt had done to me!"
"Dawna, I'm sorry, but I can't fix the past, and you left with him. I did not make you go back to Matt, no matter what you tell yourself, none of this is my fault."
"Yah whatever... .Dawna stopped talking when she hared ringing coming from the living room. "What the hell is that?"
"The phone, can I go pick it up, with out you shooting yourself?"
"No I'll pick it up."
"Fine."
Dawna walked by Billie and picked up the phone, while lowering the gun. Billie watched behind Dawna as she talked on the phone and the grip on the gun loosened.
"No I'm sorry he can't come to the phone right now I'll have to get him to call you back." Dawna placed the phone down when Billie reached for the gun.
"Billie let go of it are you crazy."
"No give me the gun." Billie and Dawna both fought over the gun, pulling at each other's hand the gun went off. Alarming both Billie and Dawna the let go of the gun while it slid on the floor, Dawna went to pick it up but it hurt too much to bend down.
"Ouch." Dawna scared in pain, rapping her arms around her torso. Billie picked up the gun before making sure she was ok.

"What's wrong?"
"Nothing, don't worry about it. Where did that built go?"
"Uh." Billie looked around. "In my sofa." Billie put his finger in the whole.
"Alright good."
"Good?"
"Yah, at less it didn't hit one of us."
"I tough it hit you they way you yelled, what's wrong?" Billie asked.
"I told you Matt beat me up!"
"I understand that, but if something hurts that much I'll take you to the hospital."
"No it's ok, just give me my gun and I'll be on my way."
"Pff, are you kidding me I'm not giving this back to you." Billie looked down at the gun.
"Oh come on its not even mine."
"Then whose gun is it?"
"Matt's."
"While he doesn't need a gun either."
"Billie, give it back. Do you want him to beat my again. Making me looking like this again?"
"No, I'll give it to you after you let me take you to the hospital."
"No I'm not going."
"Why, you're obviously hurting."
"I'll walk it off."
"No my luck you'll end up passing out from the pain, and getting hit by a car."
"No I won't."
"Alright, but you do know that one of your ribs can be broken or something and your noses looks pretty bad."
"Even if I did go what would I say happened to me."
"Tell them what happened your boyfriend beat you up."
"No Billie you don't understand, he'll just get mad again and beat me when I get home."
"Then you can stay here the night then." Billie knew he'd regret saying that.
"Really you'll do that for me?"
"Yah just for tonight though, you can sleep on the sofa."
"Alright."
"Now let's see what Matt's done to you. Ok?"
"I guess I'll show you." Dawna lifted up her shirt showing her midriff.
"Alright we should go to the hospital." Dawna looked down at he torso, and seen that bruises had now formed.
"Is there anything else?"
"My arms."
"What did he do to your arms?"
"This." Dawna lifted up the sleeves on her shirt reveling a yellow purple bruises.
"He really did a number on you, come on lets go." Billie was in disbelief. "Here's the car keys go sit in the car I'll be right out."
"Alright." Dawna went out and waited in the car while Billie hide the gun somewhere so Dawna couldn't find it. Once Billie had finished hiding the gun, he got his coat and shoes on, and walked out to the car.
"Do you think I could get away with telling them I was mugged, and that's why I look like this?"
"I don't know, they'll most likely ask you questions like what they looked like."
"Its dark out and he had a mask on."
"Do whatever you want." Billie started the car, and they were on there way to the hospital
