The Boys Next Door, chapter 9
As a couple of hours passed, the group of teens decided to call it a night. Quite embarrassed, Tre was picked up by his dad, since his own car was a piece of shit. While Mike was on his way out the door that led into his house, he said,
"Have fuuuuuuuun! Oh, and make sure you use a condom!" Billie rolled his eyes and fingered his friend. Mike laughed and left the room, leaving Billie Joe and Madison by themselves.
"I have stupid friends," Billie said, sighing.
"Well, Mike isn't really THAT stupid, but I'm more worried about the Tre guy... Does he think he's a four year old or something?"
"Haha, Tre? Naah, he IS a four year old..."
"He reminds me of my friend, Stephanie..."
"I see..."
"So..." Maddie began, "You're really good at playing guitar. I wish I could play like that."
"Thanks... Wait, you play guitar?" Billie asked.
"Yeah. I'm in a band with a couple of my friends. I'm not very good, but I do know how to play some stuff."
"We should play together one day. I could teach you some stuff if you'd like."
"Ya, that would be cool," Madison said, as she smiled at the thought. "Well, I better go."
"Hey, let me walk you," Billie Joe offered.
"Okay, but you do know I only live next door."
"Well, what happens if you get abducted by some psychopath? I wanna be there to protect you!" Madison laughed as she replied,
"We should be extra careful. Who knows if Tre really went home."
The two left Mike's garage and cut along the lawn. A couple of minutes passed when they found themselves on Maddie's doorstep.
"So..." Billie Joe said.
"So..." Madison said in return. Billie looked at his watch. 9:30pm. Hmm... What do I do? The girl of my dreams is standing right in front of me. Do I just walk away? Give her a hug? Or... Kiss her? But I don't even know her that well. But what if this is my only chance? Still unsure of what to do, Billie ignored his thoughts and leaned in towards Maddie. To his surprise, he was stopped by a hand that came in between himself and her.
"I'm sorry, Billie. I-I can't. I just..." Madison tried to explain him. She stood there, not knowing what to say. Looking up at Billie, Maddie saw the embarrassment and disappointment in his eyes. Silence fell over them. She wasn't ready for that. Especially not after what had happened...
Flash Back (Hospital)
"Matt? Please wake up. Please," I begged. I sat there, sitting next to a hospital bed, which contained my unconscious boyfriend.
"Hmm?" I heard. I looked at Matt. His swollen eyes were open, looking right at me.
"Oh thank God, you're awake," I sighed in relief.
"Ya... Owe, I can't move at all," he said.
"You shouldn't be moving anyway," I pointed out.
"Maddie? What happened?" Matt asked.
"Well..." I began. I felt my eyes watering, as I started to tell him what happened. "You left my house in quite a rush. I was trying to figure out if I had done something wrong, but then I heard this terrible crash. I looked out my window and saw you on the ground, motionless. I ran out of my house and sat next to you, trying to wake you up, while another person was calling 911. You were hit by a drunk driver."
"I...I.. Was?"
"Yes. The doctors said that you wouldn't make it, but look, you're wide awake now."
"I don't think I'm gonna be here for very long..."
"W-what?" I asked.
"I'm dying, Madison," Matt whispered.
"No you're not! You're not going to leave me! !" I cried, as a river of new tears started to stream down my face. I grabbed his hand and looked into his colourless eyes. "You can't." Just then, Matt's parents burst into the room.
"MATTHEW?! ARE YOU ALRIGHT!?" Matt's mother asked frantically. She waited for an answer, but fear was seen in her eyes, when her little boy's monitor started to beep insanely. My eyes widened. He can't leave me! He can't! Matt's father yelled for a doctor, while his mother started to loose her sanity.
"Maddie? D-do something f-for m-me," Matt managed to say.
"Anything."
"K-kiss me g-good-bye," he said, as a small smile appeared on his face. I tried to smile back, but it was impossible. I stood up and leaned in, closer to his face. I had to give him his one last wish. As our lips were about to touch, I felt a small tug on my arm.
"Excuse me, Miss, but you must leave the room now, immediately," the nurse said.
"But I can't!"
"I'm sorry, but you have too," the nurse replied, as she led me towards the door. I tried to struggle out of her grasp, but failed. She gently pushed me out the door and closed it behind her. I stood in front of the window, watching every moment pass. Matthew looked at me and mouthed, "I love you," as a tear rolled down his cheek. I mouthed back, "I love you, too." And then it happened. Matt's eyes closed. The hair on my head stood up. My face went pale. Goosebumps traveled down my spine. Tears flooded down my face. He was gone. Pain rose in my stomach when I realized, I wasn't able to give him his last wish.
End Of Flash Back
Madison felt a tear fall from her eye. Billie looked up.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
"Yes... Well, no... I don't know!" Maddie answered, as she started to cry. Stunned, Billie Joe pulled Madison into his arms, giving her a soft hug. He wondered what was wrong with her, but he didn't want to ask, in case it made her feel even worse. Five minutes had passed until Maddie's tears began to stop. She slipped out of Billie's arms and walked towards the door. As she got inside, Madison turned around.
"Good night," she whispered.
"Night," he whispered back.
