They're Gone, chapter 2
The phone trembled in my hand.
What am I going to say? Hey Billie Joe it's me Kayla that girl you saved in the fire. No, that would sound stupid. Maybe I shouldn't call him. Or should I? Maybe he forgot all about me. Then I shouldn't call him. My friend Wendy snapped me back to reality.
"Kayla just call him! He didn't forget you. If he did then he's probably a redneck. But from what you've told me he sounds like the perfect guy for you. Now call him!" shouted Wendy, which made Mr. Carbough next door wake up. Then he came over to yell at us.
After that was over Wendy shoved the phone back in my hand. My hand was trembling so bad that Wendy had to dial it for me. She tossed the phone at me.
***Billie's POV***
Maybe she doesn't want to talk to me ever again. Maybe she's still sleeping. The fire was late last night. Maybe she just thinks I'm white trash.
-Ring-
I dove for the phone. But all I did was knock it off the table. I picked up the phone right after it hit the floor. "Hello?"
"Billie Joe? It's me Kayla."
I can't believe it. She actually called me! I could barely hide the excitement from my voice.
"Hi Kayla. How are you?"
"Good. Even though my parents are in the hospital."
"Oh. I'm sorry. Well I was kinda wondering... . Umm... well... . Do you want to stay at my house since your house ya know burned down in the fire?"
I could hear Kayla gasp.
Oh god Billie don't mess up this possible relationship now! Maybe I shouldn't have said that. Please don't let her hate me.
"Sure. I was actually kinda hoping you'd ask that. Can you pick me up at my friend Wendy's? I'm at her house."
"Sure. I'll be there in a few. Can you tell her I said hi? She'll know who I am."
"Okay. She lives right across the street from the Gilman, so you can't miss it."
"Okay. I'll be there."
"Bye Billie."
"Bye Kayla."
***Kayla's POV***
I hung up the phone. I couldn't believe it. I was going to stay at Billie's house! I turned to Wendy to tell her the news.
"Billie Joe says hi."
Wendy stared at me like I was crazy. She started pacing the room in circles.
"Wendy! Are you going to have another panic attack?" I said; standing up.
"No just leave me alone."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes! Now leave me alone."
I sighed as I started picking up the few clothes I bought with my money that day. After that I left Wendy to her peace.
The Gilman wasn't as crowded as usual, maybe I'll go in. Just for the hell of it.
I got off Wendy's porch and went into the Gilman. The band that was playing was pretty good. Soon after they stopped playing a fight broke out. People were either throwing chairs or punches. I left and stepped out to the cool night air.
Maybe Billie isn't going to pick me up. Maybe he was just messing with me. I thought before I drifted off to sleep...
***Billie's POV***
"Move it grandma! I have places to go and people to see!" I shouted at a woman who wasn't driving.
I looked at the clock. 'Shit. Now I'm late. Thank you Mike.' I thought.
I slammed on the brakes. I almost passed Wendy's house. I went up to the door and knocked. As soon as I did the door swung open. Wendy was there.
With a gun.
Loaded.
Pointing at...
Me.
