In The Rough, chapter 4
"Up or down?"
"To the side."
"I'll look emo..."
"You'll actually look kinda good."
Tre' was arguing with Mike how he should wear his hair out to see Anna. He wanted to look really nice, which for some reason was strange. Tre' never cared how he looked, even out in public. He always wanted his hair good though-he wore a fauxhawk. A nice one. Always well groomed. And his eyeliner minced to be perfect. But no eyeliner tonight. He even thought himself to look better without it. He did it just for the appearance of hard-core punk in American Idiot.
"It's not like... I don't know... A date. Just going to see her."
"That's a date, Billie."
"No, it's not. He's having a drink at the bar. And she just so happens to work there."
"Well... I seen her. And she's gorgeous. Tre's got a keeper if he wants her." Mike flopped down on the bed next to Billie. He looked over at Billie, who returned the look, and then both looked at Tre.'
"I'd try second base."
"Billie, shut the f*** up. He will do what he wants. And after all... She is Frankie's teacher."
Tre' felt this like a punch in the face. She was. "How would Frankie do if Anna was here, as "daddy's girlfriend"? His pre-k teacher for that matter. She didn't look a day over at the most 23, too. I'm 33. Ten years at the least. But age was only a number, right? Maturity for the most of it. I can be mature... Sometimes." He thought to himself.
"What if he does get to second base though?" Billie argued.
"What if he doesn't. Pre-k teachers aren't in to all that shi+."
"But she is a bartender."
"For some extra cash."
"Why are you making excuses why Tre' couldn't do anything with her?" Billie asked, looking intently at Mike with his eyebrows furrowed.
"Because... I saw the way Tre' looked at her. I only saw him look at one women that way before-Lisea. That marriage was a shock to all when it ended. I can tell Tre' actually likes this girl. I'm sure he doesn't wanna ruin it with his penis."
"You aren't Tre's conscience."
"Neither are you."
"Yes, well... Tre' hasn't gotten laid since Donna... C, was it? Tryin to help my friend out."
"You're a jerk."
"You're Mom."
"You're married. You forgot was it's like to date."
"I have a ten year old son!" Billie shouted.
"Fertile semen, congrats." Mike gave Billie a single clap. "And don't you have a seven-year-old? Another fertile semen," Another single clap. "Did you have sex or was it artificial insemination?"
"F*** off," Billie snapped. "Me and Adrienne are very much in love."
"I didn't say a word about being in love," Mike said. "I was talking about your centimeter Peter."
Billie threw a punch and hit Mike Square in the jaw. He jolted back onto the unmade bed, and Billie jumped on top of him. Mike grabbed the color of his shirt kicked Billie's shin. They rolled and rolled and fell onto the floor and rolled some more. Finally, Mike kneed Billie in the groin, who doubled up and started giving little miny-coughs. "Gotcha." Mike chanted over and over.
"Quit acting so stupid," Tre' sneered. "You're gonna make me all... Hyper and horny and... Happy and I'm not gonna be able to keep her."
Mike and Billie looked at him. "You do want her, don't you?" Billie asked. "You really do like her?"
"Yes," Tre' said turning from the mirror. "I do."
"You don't even know her." Billie said, a sleek smirk on his face.
Mike looked at Tre', and Tre' looked at Mike, and Mike knew what was running through Tre's mind. He knew what his friend was going to say.
"I think it's a miracle you and Adrienne have stayed together this long-your cocky-ass attitude, smart-ass remarks. I don't think you know how to make a girl happy without sex, Billie. I don't see how she takes it..."
Mike looked at him with wide-eyes, disbelief that he had actually said it. Billie looked at him, his eyebrows lowered. "You son-of-a-bitch. At least I have a f***in' wife!"
"I'd rather had a wife that I could make happy without my money and my dick, then one that would happy with only that."
Tre' looked at Mike, then back at Billie. "I'll see you later," he said. "I'll be back soon."
"To the side."
