about 12 years later...
"Yes! Okay! Caramel latte, one sugar... ok I'm on my way! Shut UP Mel!" Eliza Ruthers snapped her cell phone shut and sighed. She was on her way to work and her best friend kept bugging her to stop at starbucks. After Eliza had bought the coffee, she got back into her car and switched on the radio. She heard the end of a song that had a familiar tune. The lyrics she heard were

Then the radio announcer guy said "that was Green Day's latest single, 'Poprocks and Coke'. Be sure watch to watch the MTV awards tomorrow night because the members of green day: Trè Cool, Mike Dirnt and Billie Joe Armstrong are making an appearance... " Eliza almost crashed when she heard his name. She switched of the radio and the memories came flooding back to her. That was the song Billie Joe had serenaded her with in his bedroom all those years ago...
Eliza shook her head and pushed the thought out of her mind.
Eliza was a journalist, and the time of year when the MTV awards were on were always incredibly hectic at Eliza's work. Her boss was going around assigning jobs to everyone that day and asked her if she would do the MTV awards. Eliza agreed because she was likely to get some good footage and a lot of pay. Later that evening she boarded a plane to LA.
**BILLIE JOE'S P.O.V**
Billie Joe was getting ready to go to the mtv music awards. Green Day had been nominated for 'Poprocks and Coke'. Billie Joe remembered when e wrote that song, and who he wrote it for. Memories came flooding back, memories he had tried so hard to forget. Then he started to think up a tune and soon he was writing down a new song. He started to strum it out on his guitar. It was great! This would be a hit. He finished writing the lyrics and wrote the title of the song: Whatsername.
Thought I ran into you down on the street
Then it turned out to only

I made a point to burn all of the photographs

**ELIZA'S P.O.V**
"Hey, Gary, we're on in five," Eliza said to her cameraman. She straightened her skirt and switched on her mic. Gary called and said that they were on air and Eliza stood by the red carpet. The stars began to arrive from Britney spears to good charlotte to Pink to Justin Timberlake, they were all there. But Eliza didn't notice them. She was only interested in getting a glimpse at one person... Then up rolled another limo and three men got out. Eliza almost dropped her microphone when she saw Mike and Billie Joe. Eliza leaned over the barriers and tried to hold her mic near the guys as they passed. Billie Joe looked at Eliza for a moment, and then a look of utter surprise came onto his face.
"Meet me in the alley in five!" he said to her. He then continued up the red carpet and Eliza saw Billie Joe say something to mike as they entered the building and Mike looked over his shoulder.
Eliza wondered if she should meet him. She remembered how much she had missed him when she moved to New York. She remembered how heartbroken she had felt, and wondered how many swimming pools she could fill with her tears. She remembered the restless nights, the guilty thoughts... she had to meet him.
**BILLIE JOE'S P.O.V**
Billie Joe was in absolute shock. He was sure he had just seen Eliza Ruthers. He tried to remember the last time he had seen her... she was doing it with Mike in the back of a car. Billie Joe touched the tiny scar on his cheek from where Eliza had scratched him all those years ago...
**ELIZA'S P.O.V**
Eliza stood in the alley and waited anxiously for Billie Joe. She felt hot all over and was very nervous. She didn't know what to say to Billie Joe. Her mind was abuzz with memories, memories she had tried so hard to forget. She was overrun with guilt. There was no way, she thought, that she could find the words to apologize to Billie Joe. And even if she did, they would be no use after all the years of pain she had caused him. Then she heard a foot step behind and when she turned around she found herself face to face with the man she had loved for the past thirteen years of her life.
