Adopted, chapter 3
Jamie's POV
It's been about a month since I moved in with Adrienne and Billie. They're really great parents, they even said I could call them Mom and Dad. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet, but they totally understand. And life here has been, in one word, awesome. Joey, Jakob, and me have grown closer, in a weird sibling sorta way. And I've learned to just go along with Jakob's fantasies about his dad being a rock star. I mean, c'mon, a famous rockstar? If I were going to lie about my dad's job, I'd go with a police officer or something.
One day, Billie Joe and Adrienne took Joey, Jakob and me shopping, because school started next Monday. We went to the mall, and I started getting this weird vibe from a lot of people. They were all looking at us. What was going on? It seemed like everywhere we went someone would stare. Finally, after a lady asked Billie Joe for his autograph, I decided to ask him about it.
"Billie, why are people looking at us?" I asked him.
"I'll tell you later," he replied, "When we get home."
I nodded.
"Why don't we split up?" Adrienne suggested, "You can take the boys and I'll take Jamie."
"Ok. Let's meet back here at 4. Or you can call me, or something," Billie said.
So we went our separate ways. And I noticed not as many people would look at us. Now I started to wonder why people weren't looking at us. Could this get anymore confusing? I just tried not to think about it.
Me and Adrienne were having so much fun shopping. My mom would never do anything like this with me. She would go out shopping and leave me at home. Adrienne made me feel more apart of this family than I ever did before my parents passed away. I know, it's a horrible thing to think, but it's true. And apparently Adrienne enjoyed having me around, too. She said that she was glad to have another girl to talk to and hang out with.
"I don't really know what girls your age like," Adrienne told me when we were looking at some shirts, "I'm just so used to having boys around."
"It's ok. I don't know what girls my age like either," I replied. Adrienne pulled out this ugly shirt with pink flowers all over it. It was just...ew!
"You like this one?" she asked me. I didn't now what to say. I hated it, but I didn't want to hurt her feelings.
"Not really," I replied, hoping she wouldn't get too upset.
"Yea me, either," she said, "I just wanted to get more of an idea of what you like."
We looked around some more and found a few t-shirts and jeans. We have the same taste in clothing. Adrienne is so cool. I can't even remember one day I've had this much fun with my own mother. At 4 o'clock Adrienne and me met up with Billie, Joey, and Jakob and went home.
I was nervous about asking Billie about why everyone was staring at us. I didn't want to aggravate or upset him. I found him later watching the news, and finally came around to asking him.
"Hey, Jamester. What's up?" Billie said when I sat next to him on the couch.
"Umm..." I hesitated, "Why was everyone looking at us at the mall?"
"Oh, um...because, well..." It looked like he was hesitating more than I was. Then it hit me! Maybe this has to do with what Jakob told me. But a famous rock star...that's a little out of line. So I decided to ask him about that, hoping not to sound too stupid.
"Jakob said something about you being...famous," I said, "Does that have anything to do with it?" God, that sounded so stupid.
"Oh, yea. That's pretty much it," he said still hesitating. "I'm in a band called Green Day, and we make music and go on tour and stuff like that."
"Oh, ok," was all I could manage to get out. Jakob was right. It wasn't just some fantasy. No wonder they could afford all this stuff and people would look at us only when he's around.
"Time for dinner," Adrienne told us when she came out of the kitchen.
"Ok, hun, " Billie Joe replied. I could tell he was relieved. "Go get the boys, please Jamie," he asked.
I got Jakob and Joey and we had dinner. I couldn't believe this. My dad is...a rock star.
