The Secret, chapter 5
Billie closed the door carefully beside him. It was late, and he didn't want to disturb Adie if she was sleeping. He had been with Tré for a long while, and now it was about 01.30 am. For that couple of hours, he had actually forgotten Adie. But when he started to head for home, he got reminded of the misery.
He hung his jacket on the clothes hanger and looked at his mirror image. Who did he see? He saw... a nervous, young man, almost trembling by everything he was through.
Billie wanted to laugh. He just wanted to sneer and laugh until he choked. He wanted the big, black cloud over his head to disappear, he wanted to turn everything dark bright.
Billie dragged his feet upstairs and went into the bedroom. He could hear Adie's breath, but he couldn't see her in the total darkness.
"Adie? Adie, are you awake?" he asked, and went closer to the bed.
It was silent, not even Adie's or Billie's breath was audible. Until Adie started to wail and sob.
"I'm so sorry--", she started between tears, but her boyfriend cut her off.
"Oh no, sweetheart, I was so... I... I was a moron, a really macho--"´
"Darling, come here", settled Adie, and Billie heard she pushed around the pillows behind her back.
Billie felt the tears burn in the eyes. He settled down on the bed and lit a small lamp beside the bed.
He stroke Adie's cheek. Her eyes were repentant and she looked as though she would obey whatever Billie told her.
"Adie... don't look at me like that..."
Adie smiled, and Billie carefully wiped her tears with his thumb.
"Billie... I must take back everything I said before... can you... can you forgive me?"
"I've never done anything more fucking stupid! I'm the one to ask for apologize!"
Silence. They only looked at each other for almost three minutes.
"I love you", said Billie and kissed her lips softly. "This will never happen again, I promise..."
"Billie, I love you too..." said Adrienne slowly and stroke Billie's blonde, curly hair. "Let's leave this behind now, okay?"
Her boyfriend nodded.
"It's time to leave something when it keeps mess up with your mind, he said. He turned so that he stared straight up in the ceiling. We've never been older than right now, Adie. Never." Billie's eyes almost trembled when he faced Adrienne again.
"Billie... what-what do you mean?"
Billie tittered with a big smile that shined up his whole face.
"I don't know... it just got stuck in my head." He grinned at himself.
"I like it", said Adie. "You should put that line in a song."
"Death is the biggest kick, that's why they save it 'til the end..." mumbled Billie and fingered a lock of Adie's hair. She smiled and kissed him.
"You're almost too weird, sweetie. I love you." She pulled the quilt up to her cheek, and it got silent.
Just silent...
Billie held his girlfriend's hand, and watched her closed eyes, and a wave of happiness and warmth welled over him. There was only one thing to feel when he saw her. Love.
