What a father should be, chapter 10

Zach's eyes fluttered open delicately, as he turned in his white hospital sheets. He longed to see Billie next to him, but knew Billie would have already started court. Turned over, he saw Billie Joe had left him Blue and a note. Zach beamed and pulled him up to read the note. He was still sore, but strong enough to sit up and walk by himself. He had recovered substantially in the weeks following his father's final attack. Immediately he saw the social workers eyes staring at him, and he retreated insecurely into his pillow, scared of strangers. The woman beamed at him from the seat at the end of his bed. Zach politely smiled, but wanted her to leave.

"Hey sweet heart... are you feeling any better?" she asked, smiling back at Zach. Zach could see right through her smile. It lacked the quality Billie's had... the quality to be able to instantly make him feel at ease. Zach nodded slowly before giggling. From his window he could see Tre doing an impersonation of the over weight woman, throwing his hands a couple of feet from his waist and waddling around slowly, as if obese. Mike was smiling and waving off the public, who stared worriedly at Tre, who had now also inflated his cheeks. Zach laughed and the social worker turned, spying Tre before he could react. Tre saw her looking at him, dropped his arms, cheerfully waved and bolted off towards the elevator, Mike yelling angrily in tow. The social worker turned and angrily wrapped her scarf around her neck. Zach's eyes glinted with laughter as the social worker smiled at him once again.

"Zach. You're all better now, and I'll be frank with you, you have nowhere to go. Billie Joe is still in the court process, and both your parents were and are only children, married once, with dead parents. As from tomorrow you're going to have to start moving into a group home." She finished, smiling at Zach. Zach's head began to whirl. What about Billie? He had a chance, why couldn't things just stay as they were? Zach's eyes began to become clouded with tears.

"Aww... don't cry honey... " the social worker pulled Zach into an unwanted hug, which he felt too weak and confused to pull away from. Zach cried heavier, and began to feel fear.
"But what about me? Don't they care what I want? I love Billie Joe... he's going to win!" Zach whispered, feeling suffocated by the social worker's perfume. A world without Billie was unbearable for him.
"And I really hope he wins! But until he does, this is just going to have to happen." She continued to hug Zach, who knew this is how people would treat him. Like a baby, push down what had happened, not be able to just fucking simply understand him. The social worker let go of him, smiling once again as she collected her things.

"Don't you fret honey. I'll be back and we're gunna make this okay." The social worker left, and Zach blinked out his tears. Group home... group home... Zach swallowed and shakily grabbed the note, hoping it to be of support.

106 Alston Rd Berkley... Brad I hate you.

Zach peered at the note and recognized the name Brad. His mind clicked. Billie wanted to see Brad. He wasn't winning because of that article. The only way they could be together was for him to go over there and force Brad to admit it was a lie.

Zach slipped out of bed and into his clothes Mike and Tre had brought from his old house. He reluctantly stole twenty dollars from Mike's wallet, knowing he would forgive him. Zach slipped out of his room and walked right out the hospital doors and into one of the many taxi's waiting outside. The driver turned.

"Where to kid?" he asked, Zach shakily tearing the address off Billie's message.
"Here please." Zach said shakily.
"A bit young to be riding by yourself aren't you?" asked the driver, peering at Zach.
"No. That's my daddy over there, I'm going to see my mummy. He doesn't talk to her." Zach said, waving to a random man. The man confusedly waved back, as the driver rolled his eyes and drove away.

Zach knew this was his time to prove his love for Billie as the tyres began to carry him off across the road...
