What a father should be, chapter 24
With more tests being done, Adrian and Zach were now in their own rooms as five pairs of feet made journeys to either of them, all wanting to give either joyous news or saddened regrets.
Billie excitedly bounded into Adrian's room, Tre and Mike in tow, wanting to tell Zach the good news. Zach looked, startled, to Billie and his beaming face accompanied by Tre and Mike's grins. Zach sat alone on the bed, feeling adrenaline pumping through him, feeling anticipation.
"I won custody! I'm your daddy!" Billie said, as Zach leaped off the bed into Billie's arms, grinning and laughing.
Adrian's mother shakily stepped into Adrian's room, his father behind, hoping he could ever forgive them. Adrian peered up at his parents, his eyes widening and a sense of awkwardness filled the air as he stared into his mother's tear filled eyes along with his father's regret filled ones. Adrian sat alone on the bed, feeling a lump rising in his throat as his parents scanned his broken frame.
"Oh Adrian, we're so sorry!" his mother said, as she sat down next Adrian, crying and holding him lightly.
"You're my daddy? For real?" Zach squealed with a smile.
"Its okay, I'm fine... " Adrian replied, his eyes darkened.
Billie tickled Zach's ribs lightly, touching heads with him and grinning.
Adrian's parents made a shaky attempt to hug him, sobbing.
"I love you Zach... " Billie whispered.
"We're sorry Adrian... " Adrian's father said.
"I love you too... "
"I'm sorry as well... "
"We're finally together Zach... "
"Never going to leave you again Adrian... "
The two boys sat at the start and finish of the hospital corridor, in two rooms, with two families, amongst two worlds. As Billie and Zach fell onto the bed in each others arms, grinning and laughing, feeling the sunlight pouring through the windows on their shining eyes, Adrian and his adoptive parents sat hunched over one another, trying to piece together a family, and Adrian saw nothing but the darkness of his mothers coat and his father's jacket.
Zach's life began to expand, the people around him branched new places he knew were going to be bliss for him, a family for him. He new the ground he was walking onto was always going to be greener than the scar filled battle field he'd crossed before. He knew the dark haired father he now had would guide him through it so the battlefield would remain crossed.
Adrian's life began to take a turn, the family around him seemed to be strangers, the smell of his "parents" was unfamiliar, not comforting at all. He had no one. Nobody who knew him or where he had come from. No one who knew where he was going.
And so stands a warrior all alone on an uncharted battlefield, with the rubble of what he knew as his past falling to pieces around him. Dirt in his hair, tears down his face and no one beside his shaky hand with no sword.
And so lies a boy in the arms of a man, both attached to some kind of a string that tie them together. The strings no one else can see, no one else can break, and so they whisper secrets without speaking along a line that only they know how to reach.
And so these strings make a fence along a battlefield, where the poisoned dirt meets the fresh grass is a place where two worlds collide behind invisible ties. Can someone break through a fence they can't see without a sword?
