Without A Bass Player, chapter 9
School dragged on, and continued to dullify. Mike didn't mind though because he had Ginger now. It had been a month since Ginger had kissed Mike, and Mike had been on top of the world since. The bus rides to school were the best for him, it was the most time he got to spend with her, except weekends and shows.
Kyle had decided to give the boys gigs anytime they asked, which was nice because they had nothing better to do. It seemed that they were at Gilman's every weekend and also days there wasn't school.
Billie, Mike, and a few of their friends were down in Billie's basement early one Saturday when the subject of Ginger came up.
"Mike, how's it going with that Ginger chick?" Their friend Sam asked.
"Oh, she's cool. She's absolutely amazing." Mike replied, smiling to himself.
"I still think she's a bitch though." Billie cut in. "There's just something about her that I cant put my finger on, but I don't know what it is, besides her flirting with every guy she meets."
"Shut up Billie!" Mike said. "I'm going out with her in an hour." He checked his watch, 11 am.
"I've seen her around Mike, is she that new chick with the bright red hair?" Tom asked from the corner of the room.
"Yeah."
"Yeah, she's pretty flirty with the guys. The other day I saw her pressing herself up against that junior, Justin Hamilton, and I thought to myself, 'Isn't that the chick Mike's going out with? ' She looks like bad news man. I'd stay away from her." Tom replied. Everyone else nodded their heads in agreement, especially Billie.
"Look, you guys don't know her like I do. She's a great person, and if you think I cant sniff out a slut by myself, then I don't know whats wrong with you. Tom, your girlfriend, Susie, she's no angel herself you know!" Mike yelled as he stomped out of the room.
"Man, he is really going to get it huh?" Sam whispered.
"Whats wrong with Susie?" Tom asked confused.
"I'll go talk to him later," Billie said, ignoring Tom, "Tom, turn the stereo up."

Ginger turned the dial of her radio very loud when she climbed into her car. She drove down the short street to Mike and Billie's house. When she stopped in front of their house, she noticed that Mike was already waiting for her on the porch. He stood up and walked slowly over to her car. When he climbed in, he gave her a kiss, and she hugged him. Ginger thought he looked a little sad.
"What's wrong baby?" Ginger asked, lovingly as she placed her hand on his shoulder.
"Nothing." Mike lied and looked up at her with a grin, while he leaned in and kissed her again. "Nothing now."
Mike had decided to take Ginger to the boardwalk in Santa Cruz. He hadn't been there in years, and thought that Ginger would be the perfect person to bring with him.
Ginger got out of the car and walked around the car to the passenger's side, while Mike slid over to the driver's side. He always felt bad that they had to use Ginger's car for dates. They made a deal that Mike would pay for gas.
"Hey, Ginny, I was just thinking, if you have a car, why the hell do you ride the bus to school?" Mike asked after she climbed into the car.
"The school has some stupid rule that you have to be a senior to drive your own car to school. Its ridiculous. My old school let sophomores drive to school, as long as they had a license." She replied.
"Oh, I didn't know about that, not having a car and all. I'm luck to even have a license, it was tough getting it without my parents here." Mike said.
"I bet."
The drive from Berkley to Santa Cruz is about an hour long. Mike was hoping that he remembered the way, he'd been studying the map all week and making mental notes on how to get there, and which highways to take.
"How's your friend Veronica?" Mike asked when they stopped at the stop sign at the end of the street. It was a bright and sunny day, no clouds at all in the sky, very odd for a late October day.
"Oh, she's fine, her and her boyfriend Jack are having some trouble. Apparently he thinks she's cheating on him with Jesse, her ex-boyfriend, which is completely stupid, because she hates Jesse's guts." Ginger said while smacking her gum.
"Oh, that sounds pretty bad." Mike said in a concerned tone. He hadn't actually met Veronica, but he had talked to her on the phone briefly and she seemed to be a nice chick.
"You're going to love this place Ginny, we'll go to the beach, and hang out there for a while, then probably grab something to eat, and then we can just hang around the boardwalk and play games and ride the Rolla coasters for a while." Mike said really enthusiastically.
"Sounds awesome." Ginger replied, with a yawn. "Do you mind if I take a nap? Or do you want me to keep you company while you drive."
"Naw, go ahead and take a nap, I'll wake you up when we get there." Mike said. And with that, she leaned her head against the window, and within minutes, she was sound asleep.
Mike was paying extra attention to the road. He felt so special that Ginger would trust him with her car.
Soon enough, there was the ocean.
