The Summer Of Our Lives, chapter 1

"Jenkins, Cassandra M.?" the teacher called. "Would you like to read your report?" I got up, document in hand, and walked up to the front of the classroom.

It was the first week of seventh grade. On the first day of school, my new English teacher had assigned us all a four-page essay on what we did over the summer. Being next on the alphabetical list, it was my turn to read my report out loud.

As I slowly walked to the front of the classroom, I could hear kids whispering. I could also see them yawning and putting their heads on their desks, as if preparing for a long and boring assembly. Through elementary and middle school, I had gained a reputation for being the shy kid. Quite frankly, I doubted as many as a handful of people even knew who I was.

These people all expected pretty much no delivery from me as far as the whole making-this-stupid-report-interesting thing goes. I can't really say I blame them. My entire life, I pretty much tried to stay out of the way of all them.

The only real friend I ever had was a girl named Olivia Thompson. Liv and I met in kindergarten, and since I'm so shy I never had any more friends. She never had any other friends, either, because she always had a perfect 4.0 GPA, used a lot of big words, and could get pretty bossy at times.

The only other people who knew who I was were my boyfriend and Liv's boyfriend. Liv met Robert Richmond last year when he asked her to our school dance in January. With me and Kevin Clark, well, it's kind of a different story...

**Flashback to January**

Kevin asked me, "Do you want to dance?"

I said, "Sure." I couldn't believe it...I was slow-dancing with my crush of two years! Soon after, the song ended. A weird thing happened: Kevin kissed me, right there and then, under the twinkling lights and glitter decorating the school cafeteria.

He said, "You know what, you're pretty cool. I really like you." And with that, I became the girlfriend of Kentford Junior High's star quarterback.

**Back to English class**

At the front of the classroom, I shook out my report and began to read, "This summer will without a doubt go down in history as the best summer my friends and I ever had..."
