The Summer Of Our Lives, chapter 3

"We are? Green Day? Really?" I instantly regretted the thing I said about the drugs.
"You're kidding! Give me that!" I lunged over Olivia to grab the paper she was holding out of my reach.
"No! I'm totally not kidding," Liv said, hugging me and laughing with joy.
"WE'RE GOING TO A GREEN DAY CONCERT!!!!! In the MOSH PIT!!!! And we have four tickets, so Kevin and Rob can come, too!!!"
I was too excited to ask what the hell a Mosh Pit was. Right now I was too excited to speak. I jumped up and down in circles, for want of something else to release all this energy.
Five minutes later, something dawned on me. I stopped jumping.
"Liv," I said, "When is it?"
"July twentieth, at Madison Square Gardens in New York," Liv answered, "Why?"
"I just thought of something. We're twelve. Our parents barely let us go to the mall by ourselves. How are we going to convince them to let us go to a punk rock concert by ourselves with only two boys and God knows how many obsessive, screaming Green Day fans?"
"Hey," Liv said, "I take offense to that!"
I ignored her. "The point is, we have you, me, Kevin, and Rob. That's four of us. And two parents each makes eight parents."
"Yeah. So?"
"God, Liv, don't you see? That means we're outnumbered two to one! And YOU'RE supposedly the math genius!"
Liv collapsed back on the couch. "Well, all we have to do is think up a brilliant and well-prepared argument as to why we should be given permission to go."
"You're probably right, but still. I'm not that brilliant."
Liv laughed. "That's what we have me for."
"Okay, now I take offense to THAT." I flopped down on the couch beside Liv.
"Let's get started. Kevin's parents will be easy. He's, you know, part of the IN-Crowd."
Everyone at our school knew that the In Crowd got away with pretty much anything from their parents.
"And you have the whole 'brilliance' thing going for you, I'm sure you'll think of something. You know Rob better than I do; you take care of his parents." I had been counting on my fingers but stopped when I reached myself.
"I'm going to be the hardest. My parents will not fall for anything, especially not the 'Hello, Mother, you're looking particularly lovely today' crap, which is pretty much all I can think of."
Suddenly Liv leaned forward and shook me by the shoulders.
"Cassandra Madison Jenkins, listen to me! I am going to that Green Day concert even if I have to hitchhike all the way from Kentford to New York!" She stopped shaking me.
"Please try... I REALLY want to go SO bad, I love Green Day -"
"I'm not saying I won't... just, you'll have to help me, I'll never be able to do it on my own."
Liv understood. "Well, duh. Finger swear?"
I held out my hand and we locked middle fingers. "All systems go. We are going to that concert."
