What's In A Name?, chapter 1

Kate leaned against the school railings, expertly balanced on the heel of her new black converses, which she dared wear instead of her regulation loafers that were bought for her recently.

Her fiery red hair was scraped back into an effortless bun, and decorated with green and black beads. Her fishnet tights were black and crisp, like a brand new dollar straight from the factory.

She was alone to lean on the railings, because new at the school, she knew no one, and no one knew her. They all looked at Kate as if she was an outsider, a threat to the usual routine at Clark High. Apart from one.

His hair was scruffy and dark, his uniform old and customised. His eyes, bottle green in colour, were shining as bright as a star in the night sky. He knew as soon as he saw Kate that she was different from the others, and that she had a mind of her own, unlike the gossiping, trend-setting girls that had disappointed him so much.

Many thoughts ran through his head, whizzing as fast as lightning through that musical mind of his. Running a hand through his hair, he walked up to Kate.
"Hi, I'm Billie Joe. But hey, what's in a name?" Kate looked him up and down, remarking his cheeky grin and confidence. She approved.

"I'm Kate," she said no more, but a smile crept on her face, replacing the icy frown that had been her trademark at her old school. She believed that speech was overused, and often unnecessary.

The bell rang as they stared into each other's eyes.

"Well, I better run. What class do you have now?" Billie asked her, hoping that she shared the same timetable as him. It was most probable, but he expected the worst.

Kate fished around in her quicksilver (black, of course) bag for her very neat timetable, and replied in a flat tone, "I've got English right now, and you?" Billie smiled.

"Great, me too."
