Its Not Easy Being Jimmy, chapter 4

2 Weeks Later

I sat on the night-bus staring out at the water droplets trickling down the window. My eyes shifted at the sight of a bum sleeping on a bench across the street. I swallowed then closed my eyes and continued listening to Nirvana on my beat-up CD-player.

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn back

I smiled at the lyrics.

"I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks... " I whispered to myself.

"Sorry?"

I turned around to find a woman my age lean her head forward as if I had said something to her. She had light green eyes, one that had a small yellow spot near the pupil. Her hair was blonde and curly and stopped at her ears. She had bright red lip-stick plastered onto her full lips and a stud just bellow her lower lip, apart from this she had an innocent porcelain-like face with a few freckles across her button nose. I studied her closely from the dark-grey hoodie and tattered converses she was wearing to the grin she was displaying for me. Fuck. I must have been staring at her for ages. I shook my head slightly and took the headphones out of my ears.

"Uh... no sorry I was just singing along to some lyrics." I smiled at her.

"Oh right." She leaned back again and looked out the window.

I put the headphones back in my ears then turned back and did the same. My stop was coming up. I reached over for the bell and pressed it steadily. Then got up and started to make my way to the front of the bus. As the bus slowed down then stopped outside my building, I got my hood, pulled it over my head and stepped out into pouring rain.

I turned around to watch the bus leave and found the girl I had been 'talking' to earlier smiling at me. I nodded my head at her then got my key and opened the door for my building. I walked up the shabby stairs until I got to my floor and got out my keys to let myself into my flat. I yawned as I turned the key then stepped inside and slammed the door behind me. I closed my eyes out of pure tiredness then laid myself down on the sofa.

I pulled an old duvet over me then rubbed my hands over my face and let Ramone jump onto me and lay herself down by my chest. I stroked her soft head then curled up around her making sure she was warm. She was skinnier than usual but I guess that was just because I didn't have enough money to support both of us. She purred as I tickled her ear then twizzled the tops of them with my rough fingers. I closed my eyes then fell slowly to sleep.

A blow in the stomach. A blow to the face. A blow to my side. A blow to my chest. Another blow in the face.

I sat up rapidly as I woke in a cold sweat. I looked at my watch. It was almost 6:00am. I sighed then wiped the sweat off of my brow and got up. I had a quick cold shower then had a chocolate bar to keep me going for the day. I poured a handful of cat-food in Ramone's bowl and left some water in the sink in case she got thirsty. I yawned then put on some clothes I found on the floor and made my way down to Danny's Diner. No sign of Harvey today. He probably thinks I'm dead anyway.

**

4 hours and 37 minutes off of my 6-hour shift had gone by so slowly, I could have sworn earth orbits the sun quicker. I wiped my sweaty brow.

"Order up!" I shouted at Pat as I clipped the check to the grill fan. I sat down on a chair in the corner of the room and put my head in my hands.

"Get back to work Haight!" the boss said and tapped me on the shoulder. I sat up right then brought myself to my feet again and made my way to the next customer. I didn't even look at the person I was ordering. I couldn't be bothered to lift my head up.

"Yeh, can I have a Cheeseburger with large fries please?" Asked the lady.

I faked a smile. "Certainly. Anything else?"

She paused for a while. "... No, I'm all right thanks. Hey aren't you that guy on the bus?"

I looked up from the check to find the girl from the bus smiling at me. I grinned back at her.

"Yeah it is. Hey!"

"So how are you?" she asked me.

"Yeh not too bad, not too bad," I lied.

"Coooool. So you work here?"

"Yeh, unfortunately," I laughed.

She smiled at me then looked up at me as if I had too say something.

"Yeah, well I have to get back to work or the boss will get me." I smiled at her again then nodded my head at her and turned around to leave.

"Umm. Look!" she added making me turn around to look at her again. "Do you, like, wanna meet up or something when you've finished work?"

Was she asking me out?
"Uh, yeah that would be cool. I finish at 1:30 if you just wanna meet outside here."

She smiled gazily at me. "Yeah that's cool."

"Alright."

"Okay. Bye."

I finally made my way back to the kitchen.

"Order up!"

**

I hung my apron on the hook by the backdoor then made my way to Danny's to collect my wages. He knew I was coming and shoved the envelope in my hands before I could interrupt his phone call.

"Thanks," I said quietly then zipped up my hoodie and stepped outside. It wasn't raining today thankfully. I looked around for her when I realised I didn't even know her name. I laughed lightly then sat down on one of the benches outside Danny's and waited for her.

It took her 3 minutes to arrive. I stood up when I saw her cross the street to get to me. She approached me then unexpectedly gave me a hug. I stood in shock not doing anything at first then put my arms around her and hugged her tight.

"You know I was just thinking I never caught your name," I said as we parted.
She put a piece of her blonde curly hair behind her ear then reached out her hand to shake mine and smiled. I shook it as she said, "I'm Indie. Indie Danforth."

"Jimmy Haight."

We smiled at each other. "You wanna go to the park?"

I nodded and was about to put my hands in my pockets when Indie took hold of one and held it firmly. She was shorter than me but she could surely hold my hand tight. I slipped her hand off of mine then put it back in her hand to my comfort intertwining my fingers with hers. She was more gentle now thankfully. I smiled at her then walked towards the park.

**

She giggled loudly as we lay down on the grass. I leant on my elbow and watched her finish off her story.

"So then I realized it wasn't him at all and just had to stand there," she laughed and threw her hands around in the air, "and explain to him what had happened and soak up the embarrassment."

She paused then sighed and stared at me. I soaked up her stare and put my trembling hands on her soft cheek. She looked at me again, but this time she looked both worried and curious as I leaned over her and planted a soft kiss on her lips. I looked her in the eyes for her approval then kissed her again but this time more passionately. I ran my hands through her hair as she held my face. She rolled me over so I was now on my back and she was lent over me with her legs either side of me. I ran my hands along her slender body then sat up bringing me with her. I started to kiss her neck and her face making sure to miss her mouth until she trembled. I kissed her hard as she stroked the back of my neck. It took us a few more soft kisses to part and finally smile at each other. She bit her lip. I stroked her hair then planted one last kiss on her soft lips. It struck me. I wasn't gay. I was straight. Or at least bi. I smiled again then kissed her on her temple and hugged her tight.
