A Last Ride In on the Boulevard of Broken Lives, chapter 1
"Hey, Billie! Wanna come over. Tre and I are gonna do something, but I don't know what." Said Mike over the phone.
"Yeah, sure. I just gotta run the boys to school." I replied.
"Okay. Well, probably go get something to eat and... I don't know. We'll worry about when you get here. Stella's at her mom's house, so..."
"Okay, cool. See ya soon." I said. Mike said bye and we both hung up the phones. I grabbed my coat and walked out to the car where Joey and Jakob were waiting. Joey was in fifth grade and Jakob was in second.
When I got them to school, Jakob tripped on the curb, but I helped him up again. I took Jakob to his classroom as Joey went on his own, since he knew his way around his school.
When I got to Mike's house, he and Tre were watching Spike TV. Those Japanese sports shows were pretty entertaining.
"Hey guys!" I said. Tre waved at him.
"Hey, man!" said Mike. He had a notebook and a pen in his hand. He dropped it on the floor beside the couch and gave me a high-five as I sat down on the couch between Tre and Mike. Tre turned off the TV.
"So, what should we do?" said Tre.
"I don't know. Maybe... Mall? I heard someone was playing in the old arcade. Wanna go see who it is?" I said.
"Sure, why not?" said Mike. We all got up off the couch and walked outside.
"Whose car are we takin'?" said Tre.
"I'm out of gas." Said Mike.
"So am I. I guess we'll take yours." I said. We both had not been to a gas station in a week, since it had been Christmas weekend, and we had stayed at home. We all got in Tre's SUV and backed out of Mike's driveway. Mike was driving. When we pulled onto the highway, there was a man in a red van that was swerving in and out of lanes.
"Why don't you report him, Billie." Said Tre who was sitting in the front passenger seat. He turned to look back at me. My eyes were wide open, looking at the van out the side window.
"MIKE!" I screamed. The van smashed right into the side of Tre's car, flipping off onto the side of the road. I smashed into the side of the car and snapped my neck. Then, I couldn't breathe. Well, I had just enough air to ask the guys if they were okay. Tre moved his arm a little but Mike wasn't moving. His face started to turn white, and I started panicking. I passed out. I was unconscious.
