Why Is Your Hair Blue?, chapter 1
"Two more, make them light this time."
"Sure."
"Hey Di?"
"Yeah Joe?"
"Melissa said she's cutting me off."
"Don't worry, I'll sort you out."
I laugh as I lift 2 more dirty, empty glasses onto the tray and carry it back behind the bar. I set it down and pull out two new glasses filling them with light beer. I grab another smaller glass, as I put a scoop of ice in it, I open the fridge behind me pulling out a jug of water and filling the small one. I put the three on the tray and come out from the bar. I make my way over to a couple of old men, who are smoking cigars and chuckling. I place the beers in front of them and keep walking.
"Here you go, Joe," I say setting the water on the table for him, he studies it for a minute before looking up at me
"Is this a joke, Di?"
"No, Melissa says she's cutting you off and I must respect that."
"Meanie," he pouts and pulls me into his lap, I laugh and Melissa his girlfriend rolls her eyes. Joe is a regular, comes in almost every night with or without Melissa. He definitely likes his drinks, but he's harmless. I pat his arm.
"Okay let me up, I have to work."
He sighs and reluctantly lets go. I go back to man the bar. Dre my boss comes in through the back door, just as a couple approaches. Dre gives me a look then goes to serve them. This couple also come in on occasion, the guy is fine but the girl's a stuck up bitch always ordering the same.
"I'll have a lemon, lime, and bitters." I mouth her order as she says it. He boyfriend notices and smirks. After they go to sit in a booth, Dre offers to take the next few customers. I smile and pour myself a club soda, I lean against the bar watching everyone sitting around drinking their drinks. I love this job, I've only been working here for 4 months, but it's fun, getting to know the regulars and Dre is the best boss I could've hoped for, he's more like my friend than my manager. The door opens again and I watch as a guy walks in. He gets a few weird looks from the people already inside, I figure it's because of the fact he has electric blue hair. I notice Dre struggling to keep up with orders I decide to take care of this one.
"Hey, what can I get you?"
The guy doesn't reply for a minute he just seems to be staring, I smile.
"You know if you don't answer me I'm just gonna mix a whole lot drinks and laugh when they burn your throat." He blushes
"Sorry, but that drink does sound promising so I'll have that."
"Really?"
"Yep." I shrug and pull out another glass from under the bar, I fill it with ice then start mixing different drinks. I'm pretty sure I could get fired for this if Dre notices, so I do it quickly.
"Here you go."
"How much?"
"Tell you what, if you can drink all in one go it'll be on the house, that and your next drink."
"Well then I'll just have to make my next drink an expensive one."
"We'll see." I watch as he lifts the drink to his lips and starts pouring it down his throat. His confident face slowly turning desperate as he struggles to swallow, I put my hand over my mouth so as to stop myself laughing. I can see alcohol now running down his chin. Finally he finishes, slamming the glass on the counter gasping for air. I get him a glass of water for his burning throat and he drains it in a second. I let out a small laugh
"So...about my next free drink."
"That was it," I say, gesturing to the now empty water glass.
"Are you joking?"
"Don't know. Was that strong enough for you?"
"What the fuck was in that?"
"Oh you know a little of this, a little of that."
"Oh...right."
"Anyways, here," I say, getting him a beer.
"Thank you."
"Hey! Hello! Excuse me can I get some service over here?"
I roll my eyes at the sound of the stuck up bitch.
"I have to go and work now, but it was nice talking to you." I leave the blue haired boy and go over to the lady
"About time. I would like a refill, this time withOUT ice."
"Sure thing."
"I'm on it!" I look over at Dre who has obviously heard her request. I check my watch 11:30, still half an hour before closing. I look up again at the sound of the door opening, I see the blue haired guy walk past the window.
"Why are you still standing here?"
"Oh sorry." I hurry away from the table and start cleaning up others. I pass Dre on my way back to bar. I notice a slip of paper sitting on it, I pick it up, it's blank but underneath it is twenty dollars. I slip the money into my pocket. What a generous tipper. The rest of the night was slow, people were leaving, Joe and Melissa the only ones to say goodbye. I checked my watch again 11:55. I sigh and walk over to the few guys left at one of the tables
"Hey, sorry guys, I gotta kick you out now."
A couple of them mumble okay, whilst the others reach into their back pockets to pull out money. I stand a few feet away from them and watch them leave. I count the money on the table, satisfied with the amount I got and put it in the cash register. I go into the backroom and pick up my bag; I pull out my tips for the night and put them in my purse. I turn off the light and walk back into the main room where Dre is checking everything. As I walk past him he hands me my pay for the night.
"See you tomorrow. Wait, are you working tomorrow?"
"No, it's just you and Matthew; it's mine and Vanessa's 9th anniversary."
"Oh okay cool, say hey to her for me."
"I will."
"Night, Dre."
"Bye Dianna."
I leave the bar and begin my walk home.
"Sure."
