“uh, Sarah, could y’ help, saddles too heavy!� Cody laughed as she dropped the big western saddle back onto its block.
“Honestly, you’re hopeless girl, “ her friend teased, carrying the saddle to Timber’s box “I’ll help y’ tack up when I’ve done Misfit� her voice became muffled as she bent under the horse to tighten his girth.
“Okay, thanks,� Cody replied, giving up with the bridle as her phone rang, “hey Jake….Yeah, I’m fine, we’re at the stables……I know, I just came to see him…..yeah, yeah, I’ll be home for tea, don’t worry…7 O’clock, right, I’ll be home….bye.� She hung up, attempting to put Timber’s bridle on again.
“What did Jake want?� Sarah asked as she placed the blankets on her friend’s horse’s back before picking up the saddle, “Jeez, y’ couldn’t get a smaller horse could ya?� she laughed, reaching up to the 15hh back.
Cody laughed, “Sorry, I’ve been tryin to get him to shrink but I think he’s growin’ instead, he was only 14.2hh when I got him. Err, he was chekin up, makin sure I’d be home for tea,� she finished, leading Timber out of his box onto the main yard, colliding with a slim, brown haired girl.
“Uh, sorry,� the new girl said, looking up at Cody “y’ ok?� noticing that the horse had thrown it’s head high, eyes rolling & ears pinned back.
“Yeah, fine, sorry. Timber, get down y’ fool, you’re not scared,� she replied, reaching up & stroking his neck, “You’re new here?� she asked. Still trying to calm the gelding.
“Yeah, I’ve just moved from texas, I came to check my pony’s ok�
“Cody! Get your horses ass outta the way, we want sunlight!� Sarah’s voice carried out from inside the barn, “Thanks,� she added as Cody moved Timber over to let them out.
“So, info, what’s your name? What school you goin’ to? What grade?� Cody asked, throwing the split reins over the Brown & White neck, “I’m Cody by the way, this is Timber�
“I’m Sarah’n’ this is Misfit, we keep these two outta trouble,� her friend grinned, “or we try to,�
“I’m Amy� the new girl smiled, holding her hand out for Misfit to sniff before patting him, “I’m goin to Pinole high, I’ll be in the 11th grade�
“Coolio, that’s the same as us, we’ll look out for ya tomorrow,� Cody looked at the girl, “you can hang around with us & Danny,�
“Yeah, then we won’t miss you as much when you go off with Jake ‘n’ the guys to have a green day,� Sarah laughed, “you should o’ seen her yesterday, wasted, totally gone,� she explained to Amy.
Amy smiled, patting Timber as Cody jumped on his back, “Oops, that sounds like me ‘n’ the guys I hung around with,� she paused thinking, “A green day? Isn’t that a band? My friend has a cd by them I think,�
Sarah looked down from Misfits back, “Yeah, Cody’s datin’ Mike, but they meant it, um… I can’t explain it really, their private joke, I think it means a day o’ doin’ nothing ‘cept smoking dope like idiots,�
“S’all good� Cody laughed, “That’s why the bands called Green Day, they came up with the name when they were high ‘n’ watchin’ sesame street, then the old drummer had it put on his jacket� she laughed “anyway, we gotta go, see ya tomorrow!� Cody smiled, nudging Timber as they followed Sarah & Misfit out of the gates.
20 minutes later
The two horses cantered along the track, skidding back to a walk as their riders reined them in as they reached the road. “WOW!� Cody breathed, dropping down onto Timber’s neck for a short while, “That was great.�
“Yeah, I love that trail,� her friend grinned back at her, walking Misfit over the bridge, “So, What d’ya think of Amy? She seems pretty cool,�
“Yeah, someone in the crue who won’t look down on me when I get jaded,� she laughed, poking her tongue out at Sarah, “but I gotta plan�
“Uh-oh, sounds ominous,� Sarah looked at her, halting her horse as they got off the road & into the forest “what is it?�
“Y’ know how I said I couldn’t do anything’ for Tre?� Cody replied, halting next to Sarah, “Well, what if we found him a girl?�
“Amy? D’ya think she’d like him? I mean, he likes anything’ with a pulse but…� she trailed off as they started to walk back to the track to the stable yard.
“Yeah, I’m almost sure they’d get on, we can only try, let’s introduce ‘em tomorrow,� she caught Sarah’s eye, grinning as she trotted down the hill, posting out of the saddle to stop her ribs hurting.
6.30 pm
Cody opened the door, “Hey, I’m home,� she called, going through to the livin room, sitting next to Jake on the sofa.
“How was the yard?� he asked, still watching the screen “and the ride?� he added quietly, looking at his cousin as he raised a knowing eyebrow “rebel!�
She laughed “How’d ya guess? It was good, we met a new girl, she’s starting at our school tomorrow,�
