The Unsuspecting Victim, chapter 4

"Adrienne, you th-there?" asked Mike, knocking on the door. "Yeah I'm c-coming," she replied sleepily. She got up off the couch and stumbled to the front door. She rubbed her aching head in pain. "A-adrienne?" Mike asked. "Yeah I s-said I w-was coming," she moaned. She opened the front door and signalled her hand to let Mike know he could come in. He nervously sat down on the couch and Adrienne sat next to him. His hands were sweaty and clammy and he was shaking badly. He stared down and caught a glimpse of a photo of Billie Joe. This was enough for Mike to break into a fit of tears. "Oh Christ, he's g-gone," Mike exclaimed. "He's st-still here," said Adrienne. "He'll always be here." She flung her arms around Mike, not ever wanting to let go. "Oh, shit," exclaimed Adie remembering something. "W-what?" asked Mike confused. "Th-this is all my fault, she sobbed. "N-no it ain't. This is all John's fault," said Mike. "You heard what Billie said. Well that's if we actually saw Billie." "Of course we d-did!" cried Adie. "If we were imagining it, how did we all see the same th-things?" she stuttered. "I suppose," mumbled Mike. "L-look, John was a nasty piece of sh-shit. He always bullied Billie and I couldn't do anything because he was much bigger and stronger than me and you know how small Billie was."

Mike couldn't keep it in much longer. He let out a cry and tears rolled down his face. Just then there was a knock at the door. Adrienne pulled her weak, shaking body up and headed towards the front door. When she opened it a small smile slipped up her face. "T-tre," she said burying herself into his shoulder. "A-adie, I needed some company and M-mike wasn't home so I th-thought I would come here," said Tre, a tear sliding down his pale face. "C-come in Tre'," she said, leading him into the house.

"Mike," said Tre, pulling his friend into a warm, inviting hug. "I can't believe it Tre'. I just c-can't," Mike said, looking at his friend with watery eyes. "I know," said Tre'. "You guys s-sit down and I'll get us all a n-nice cup of c-coffee. Then M-mike can finish w-what he was saying t-to me, okay?" asked Adrienne, trying to be cheery but failing miserably. Both Mike and Tre' nodded and then took a seat on the sofa.

Adrienne returned from the kitchen with three mugs of coffee and a tear-stained face. "Here you g-go," she said, handing Mike and Tre' their mugs with shaky hands. "Thanks," they both mumbled together. "M-mike," said Adrienne, sitting down on an armchair and taking a sip of coffee. "W-what were you saying? You know, before Tre g-got here." "Um, oh yeah," said Mike unsurely. "T-tre, you know how I said that John used to bully Billie?" asked Mike, letting tears flow as he mentioned his best friend's name. Tre' nodded remembering what Mike had told him on a few previous occasions. "Well one time, he g-got a little out of hand." Mike shuddered, remembering what had happened that one night in 1990. "G-go on," said Adie, preparing for the worst. "Okay," answered Mike simply, closing his eyes to recall what had happened.

*February 17th 1990*

"That little fucker has gone too far this time!" screamed John, bursting through the motel door where Green Day were staying while on their tour of America. "Don't hurt him please!" pleaded Mike trying to stop John in his tracks. "It's his eighteenth birthday today." "Fuck off!" John screamed back. "He didn't do anything," Mike tried to reason. "So sleeping with Steph is nothing is it? The last time I checked, she was my girlfriend not his!" he bellowed. "Not suprised she left you for him," Mike mumbled thinking that John wouldn't hear him. He was wrong however. "FUCK OFF!" John screamed at the top of his voice. He punched Mike so hard that his body flew up against the wall and he was knocked out cold. "Now, where was I?" he asked himself. "Oh yeah, just about to kill Billie Joe Armstrong, that's it," he said cheerfully. John made his way to the bedroom where he heard Billie Joe on his guitar. Just as he was about to burst through the door, he heard Steph's voice. John placed his ear against the door to hear what was going on. "I wrote this song for you Steph," said Billie Joe, starting to play a guitar riff and sing the most beautiful song Steph had ever heard.

Here we go again, infatuation
Touches me just when I
Thought that it would end
Oh but then again it seems
Much more than that but
I'm not sure exactly what you're thinking

I toss and turn all night
Thinking of your ways of effection
But to find that it's not different at all
I throw away my past mistakes
And contemplate my future
That's when I say...
What the hey!?!?

Would I last forever?
You and I together, hand and hand
We run away (far away)
I'm in for nasty weather
But I'll take whatever you can
Give that comes my way (far away)

Once Billie Joe had finished 'Going to Pasalacqua' Steph looked speechless. "Well?" asked Billie. "It's wonderful!" cried Steph wrapping her arms around Billie and kissing him. That was breaking point for John. He burst through the door and Steph and Billie suddenly looked up. "This is the end of you Armstrong," sneered John.
