A Taste For Suicidal, chapter 10
We had pizza for lunch, which was a nice change from the day before. I took a slice of that and one cookie with my milk. Bailey only grabbed a milk. We walked silently over to an empty lunch table, sat down and began our lunch.
I had a mouthful of pizza when Bailey finally started talking, so I couldn't really respond to what she was saying. I hastily swallowed my food and it passed through my throat as if I had eaten the whiffel ball from hockey. She gave me a peculiar look.
"Are you alright, Joseph?" she asked.
"Oh, um, yeah. The pizza, it... Yeah." I laughed.
"Okay... Well, Kindra tells me you're an intresting room-mate." she informed me with a slight grin. "She says you've already read all the books you have in your dorm."
"Yeah, I have. But so have Melodie and Keith." I said.
"A very literal group, I assume? Reading was never my thing."
"Oh... I like to read. It's the only thing that can put me in a completly different world."
"... Never thought of it that way."
I shrugged and took a sip of my milk. Why were we talking about books? They're fun to read, but to talk about them? Not so much. I tried to think of something else to discuss.
"So... Kindra tells me you like hockey?" I changed the subject.
She titled her head back. "It's just another way for me to get my anger out." she sighed.
"Is that why you fought him?" I had to ask.
"Yeah. It was either beat him over the head with a hockey stick or do what you saw last night." she replied.
"... Why do you have to resort to those things? I don't understand."
"Joey, in the world of the unexcepted, anything goes."
Her words burned with truth. It shut me up damn good. She was a lot more serious, or intelligent if you would, than I had suspected. She had a good view on things, for the most part.
I honestly didn't know how to retaliate. I didn't even know if I should have. She just looked at me, as though she was trying to read what I was thinking through my body language. I was pretty sure that it would've been fairly easy to do.
"... Listen, about what happened earlier." she started. "I'm glad you were there. I don't know why, Joey, but you make me feel safe. You make me feel like I'll be okay."
"Thanks...?" I said, a little taken aback.
"Don't get all love dovey on me though." she cautioned.
"Hey, you're the one who kissed me."
She laughed and blushed a light red. Then the color drained and her eyes narrowed. "Seth."
I turned my head and found a very angry Seth Monningham storming over to us. He grabbed me by the collar and roughly pushed me ahead of him. He told me he wanted to talk to me. What is it with everyone wanting to talk with me today? , I asked myself, reluctantly following him to a quiet section of the lunch hall.
It was almost like he was a completly different person, the way he talked to me. First he started off on my hockey skills, my fighting skills, he even menchioned something about my fashion sense.
A bit further into the conversation and Bailey's name popped up. I didn't realize it at the time, and oh how I wish I had caught it then, but he was getting inside her head through me.
"So uh, Kindra. Kindra is her sister?" he asked me.
"Yeah. She loves her sister so much... She's sort of me like with my brother. Our siblings are practically our lives." I joked.
"Oh really? That's interesting... Tell me more."
And like an idiot, I did. It was one of the biggest mistakes of my life. I regret it now, I wish I could take it all back, just because it was the start of one very long and tragic battle.
