A Taste For Suicidal, chapter 9
"Hey Keith, are you awake?" I whispered rather loudly as soon as I had returned.
There was a rustling noise. "I am now," he sighed.
"Good. I was wondering if I could talk to you about something..." I said.
"Oh, alright, but let's go out in the hall. I think Kindra is still up," he replied.
"Shut up!" she hissed.
"See?"
I laughed and waited for him to get out of bed. When he had joined me, we quietly crept to the door, not wanting to disturb the Melodie, and stepped outside for some privacy. I felt embarrassed for what I was about to ask him.
"Keith, how old are you?" I started.
"Sixteen," he replied.
"Then you've had awhile...Well, I need some help," I said.
"With what?" he sighed.
I felt my cheeks growing hot. "Um...With, with girls," I managed.
"...Who's the girl? Bailey?" he asked; I nodded. "I thought so. Well, tomorrow is a free day. Kindra tells me her sister always plays floor hockey on free days. All you have to do is play hockey with her, get to know her, that kind of thing."
"I can't play with her alone! I'll make an ass of myself!"
"Then I'll see if any of the others wanna go. But for now, I'd like some sleep."
"Move it, you fuckin' assholes! I will beat all your heads in if you don't- HOLY SHIT!" Keith blocked the whiffle ball that had been slap-shot-ed towards him. "Haha, you missed!"
I shook my head. He was the goalie, and he sure did like to taunt. Not just the other team either, he taunted our players. It was kind of funny and kind of annoying, now that I think about it. But at the time I hadn't been paying much attention to anything except Bailey Renee.
Thanks to her nobody called me Joey or Joseph. They all called me "Rockstar." I didn't really mind, because people at my old school had called me that too. I was used to it.
"Hit the damn ball, Monningham! What the fuck is your problem?" she screamed.
Seth stopped dead in his track. "What'd you say to me, you little bitch?" he spat.
"You heard me. Why the hell are you on my team anyways?" she asked.
"Because I'm the oldest and I can be on whatever team I want!" he yelled.
"I don't care if you're the oldest, Seth. You're an asshole and it's about time some one put you in your place!"
There was a loud thwack and I realized she was beating him with her hockey stick. His nose bled from the first blow and his mouth the second. Then he pushed her down and kicked her a few times, but I ran over to them before he could do any real damage.
"Back the fuck up!" I shouted.
He glared at me. "You're that bastard I stuck up for, aren't you? Well, I regret that," he said, knocking me aside.
I went to kick him in the back of his knees to get him down, but an aid stopped me. She grabbed Seth by the shoulders before he could even touch Bailey again and escorted him out of the gym.
Bailey had a satisfied grin on her face as she watched him get dragged out. She didn't even seem to flinch when he mouthed the words, "You'll be sorry." I doubted she would ever be.
Naturally, the hockey game was called off. Everyone cleared out of the gymnasium. Well, almost everyone. Kindra, Keith and Melodie stayed back as I waited for Bailey to get up. We were out five minutes after everyone else.
"Hey Rockstar, thanks for bein' there," she told me with a playful punch to the arm. "You really are alright."
"Thanks," I replied.
"Hey, would you mind comin' with me to get some lunch? I wanna talk with you," she said.
"Sure."
She led me away from the pack and I saw Keith give a thumbs up. I smiled. I was finally going to talk to Bailey alone. Well, besides the night prior to that...That was just freaky and could hardly be counted as a conversation.
Okay, the point is, I was really looking forward to a normal chat with her. I just hoped she'd feel the same way...
