Homemade Cookies, chapter 1
I didn't recognise Billie-Joe when I saw him in the street. He seemed familiar, I knew the face from somewhere but I didn't really do anything. Not until he began to run that is. A shout from behind him 'Oh my god! It's Billie Joe! ' and all of a sudden everybody knew who he was. I would have thought he'd be used to over-exited fans but he didn't seem to know what do. I decided to help. I grabbed his hand and pulled him into a side street. He was wearing torn jeans and scruffy black tee, his eyes were rimmed with thick (if slightly smudged) black eyeliner and he looked shocked to say the least. He started to say something but I cut him short.
''Yes, yes I know who you are. That's why I'm offering help. If you want to get away from them-'' I jerked my head towards the teenies ''then follow me. '' I said. He looked puzzled. No wonder. I sighed.
''Look, I'm not gonna bite you or anything. Just trust me. '' He looked behind him to the quickly advancing fans, then back to me. His green eyes widened.
''Who are you? ''
''My name is Adrienne Nesser but you can call me Adie if you want. I know where-''
All of a sudden I was interrupted by a yell from behind.
''He's down here! ''
''Shit! '' Billie turned to face me again. ''Right now I don't care who you are just get me away from them! '' he gabbled at me.
''Follow me. ''
I had to yell for him to hear me over the screams as I ran down the street. Right, left then left again. The quick-paced footsteps behind me told me he was, indeed, following. Eventually, I stopped at the end of a row of houses. We had long since let the teenies behind, and after that slowed to a walk. But I wanted to show him something.
''Would you wait here a moment? '' I asked.
''Where are you going? ''
''Inside. I want to get some stuff. I won't be that long. It'll give you a chance to catch your breath too. ''
''Sure thing. I'll just wait here then. '' He said.
I headed down the path of the house on the end, pulled out my keys, unlocked the door and stepped in. Grabbing a shoulder bag off the floor I started to cram stuff in. Wallet, notebook ad pens, mobile, bottle of water and CD player. Not forgetting some food of course. I slung my now-heavy bag over my shoulder and headed towards the door, stopping only to brush my hair and pull on a hoodie. It was getting cold out. I was slightly surprised to see that Billie Joe was actually waiting for me; I had half expected him to just leave. When he saw me, he grinned.
''Whatcha got? '' he asked.
I reached into my bag, pulled out a plastic tub and threw it to him in reply. He opened it and his smile grew.
''Cookies! ''
''Homemade cookies. ''
''Awesome. Can I have one? ''
I raised an eyebrow.
''Why else would I give you them? Go ahead and have one. Just don't eat them all, OK? ''
He picked one out (chocolate chip) and started munching.
''So, how come you trust me all of a sudden? ''
He stared at me, looking puzzled.
''What do you mean? '' he asked, spraying cookie crumbs.
''Well, at first you were all suspicious, and now you're waiting for me and eating my food. '' I pointed out. He thought for a while, swallowed and finally said:
"You saved me from a fate worse than death back there. I know they weren't going to hurt me, but have you any idea how horrible it is being surrounded by a mob of screaming, over-exited fans? ''
''Can't say it's ever happened to me, '' I said. ''But carry on. '' I took a cookie from the tub.
''They just won't let you go. It's always another picture, another autograph and if they get really bad, another kiss. ''
I winced. ''You kiss your fans! ''
''Hey! It's not like I have a girlfriend or anything so I'm not cheating on anyone. Anyway, Adie, where are we going? ''
''That's a surprise! Follow me. ''
We set off down the street, heading towards the park. It wasn't far, just a block away, but by the time we got there the conversation had turned very strange. And half the cookies were gone.
''I'm telling you, '' I said, poking him in the ribs ''Jack Skellington is hot! ''
'No way. I may like guys, but a skeleton is too far! What's he got that's so special? '
''For a start, he's romantic-''
''I can be romantic! '' he interrupted.
''Who said I was going out with you? ''
''Nobody. Yet. ''
I pretended to look shocked.
''Mr Armstrong are you asking me out? ''
''Well, will you? ''
I hadn't expected him to be serious. But how could I turn him down, he was funny and sweet and we got on really well together.
''Ok. ''
''Yes, yes I know who you are. That's why I'm offering help. If you want to get away from them-'' I jerked my head towards the teenies ''then follow me. '' I said. He looked puzzled. No wonder. I sighed.
