But I Love Him...Don't I?, chapter 10

Billie, Adie and I grabbed each other's hands for comfort, and we were lead to the waiting room while they operated on Joey. I'm so glad we got to the hospital in time. We waited there for a few hours, pacing up and down, bursting out in tears, going all silent and daydream like, until a doctor came up to us.

"Excuse me, Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong, could you follow me please?" Adie looked fearfully as she got up and followed the doctor, Billie not far behind. I waited behind, and got as close to the room where Adie and Billie went into. Moments passed, until I heard Adie give a little cry. I could hear her sobbing and the doctor murmuring. He's dead! Oh my gosh! He's dead! I thought. Tears came pouring down my cheeks, Billie and Adie walked out of the room, Adie was facing downwards and Billie's hair was covering his face, I can't believe he's gone! I thought. But suddenly...Adie looked up at me... and she was smiling!

"I really thought he was going to die!" She said to Billie, her tears were tears of joy, not sadness! And the cry she let out must have been of relief!

"He's alive?!" I asked, looking wide eyed at Billie.

"Yes, the doctor said that the operation went successfully and that they're just keeping a close eye on him for a couple of days" Billie said, looking so relieved.

"When can we go see him? Is he awake?"

"We can go see him now, but he won't be awake until about tomorrow morning, the anaesthetic should wear off by then," Adie said. A nurse walked up to us.

"You may come see your son now," She said. We all followed the nurse into a room, and there was Joey, on a life machine, looking so pale, but yet so beautiful. I burst out in crying, I can't believe I nearly lost him! I just wanted him to open his eyes and say those three words I loved to hear. Adie sat in the chair next to the bed and stroked his hand, exactly the same way she had done in the ambulance a few hours before. We sat there in silence, all relieved and thinking about what could have been, what could have happened, what we could have lost.

"Charlie, it's getting late, your parents will be wondering where you are," Billie said. I checked my watch, it was near half seven!

"Oh I didn't realise it was getting so late!" I said.
"Come on, I'll drop you off home and explain to your parents what's happened," Billie said. I looked at him thankfully. I pecked Joey on the cheek.

"See you tomorrow Joey, it is okay if I come down tomorrow right?" I said looking over at Adrienne. She smiled and nodded her head.

"Thanks," Billie and I walked out of the hospital and into his car. We arrived outside my house.

"I must warn you Billie, my mum, she... erm... is a teenie."
He laughed, and shook his head.

"How did you get into rock then?" He said.

"Well when I was younger I lived in Wales, and I had a Goth friend called Samantha, but she loved to be called Sam, she was awesome, but then she one day went missing, and I moved over here," I said, remembering for the first time in months about one of my best friends. Man I missed her. I hated thinking about her because I never knew what happened to her, she could be back home for all I know.

"I'm sorry," Billie said. I just shook my head.

"Don't be." Billie and I walked up towards my front door and we rang the doorbell. My dad answered the door.

"Charlotte! Where have you been?!" Dad said. He looked quite worried. "And who are you?" he asked Billie suspiciously. "Have we met before? You look familiar... hang on... hey! You're the man in Blue day!"

"GREEN Day, Dad!" I said looking angry.

"Little Bobo here is a great fan of your work, she says you're the best songwriter ever and that your songs are just amazing!" Billie blushed.
"Erm... I... "

"Dad! Stop embarrassing him! And me for that matter! Billie has come to tell you where I have been" I said. Billie and my dad went into the front room while I checked my text messages.

"Hey it's James, soz 2 hear bout Joey, tb when u can love J xxx"
I texted him back explaining about what happened and that Joey is okay. I walked into the front room, and there was Billie looking extremely scared, my dad had buggered off somewhere which means that Billie was left on his own with my mum. She was playing with her hair, and giggling and kept touching his arm every once in a while.

"Mom! Stop hitting on Billie!" I said. She looked embarrassed, and went bright red.

"I... I'm not!" she said, moving slightly away from Billie. Billie looked at me as if to say thank you, you have saved me from this crazy demented teenie woman thing. I laughed.

"You'd better get back to Joey...and um...Billie?"
"Yah?"

"If he wakes up, and I'm not there, um... tell him... that..."

"You love him?" I looked up at Billie.

"Yeah," I said smiling. My mom just looked at me with one eyebrow raised and the other in a straight line, like this freaky teacher does all the time in school. I laughed.

"Later, Mom," I said. Billie hugged me and kissed the top of my head in a fatherly way, and said bye. I watched him get into his car and drive away. I walked inside and shut the door. What a day...
