But I Love Him...Don't I?, chapter 9
**DEDICATED TO SAMANTHA**
Tears were streaming down my face, I ran towards Joey and knelt beside him and grabbed his hand. Please don't be dead! I thought. Chiara was just staring down at him, everybody had gone silent.
"Don't just stand there!! Do something!! Please!!" I screamed, pleading. A year seven ran out and went to get help. A teacher I didn't know came running in, he saw Joey on the floor, saw the blood spurting out of his head, and pulled out his phone and rang an ambulance. Then he told some friend of Dan's to go and ask for Joey's parents' numbers. He rang Billie and Adie and told them we were in the school. All through this, I was crying, staring at Joey's closed eyes. Frankie came behind me and hugged me.
"He'll be fine Charlie!" she said, although she didn't sound too convinced. The ambulance came and started treating Joey in the room he was in making sure he was ok to be moved. While they were putting Joey in the ambulance Adie and Billie raced up in their car. Billie opened the car door and ran towards the ambulance. Adie shortly followed. I had never seen Billie look so white in my entire life. There were silent tears spilling down his face. My tears were anything but silent. I was screaming and sobbing into Smee's arms.
BILLIE'S Point Of View
"We can only treat him in the hospital, all we can do in the ambulance, is give him some anaesthetic and stop the bleeding, and hope," a paramedic said.
"I'll take the car so we can get back home," Adie said to me, while stroking Joey's limp hand, tears streaming down her beautiful face. I nodded. I looked at Charlie crying into her friend's arms. She looked up at me and I nodded at her, as if to say come with me on the ambulance. I couldn't face this alone. We climbed up onto the ambulance, and Charlie took hold of Joey's hand, as if her life depended on it. She really loved him didn't she? Since Joey had met her he'd been so much happier, like this morning he had been so happy...more tears start sliding down my face as I remember how happy he was, just this morning. Charlie faced me and I hugged her and held her tight, stroking the top of her hair. After a bit a paramedic walked up to us.
"Well, there's good news and bad news," he said.
"What's the good news?" I croaked...surprised I could find my voice at all. Charlie snuggled in closer, afraid of what the paramedic was going to say.
"Well when we get to hospital, he'll need an operation on the head, and it's 75% effective."
"If that's the good news then I don't want to hear the bad news!" Charlie said. I looked up at the paramedic fearfully.
"The thing is, that's ONLY if we get to the hospital on time...it's a matter of life and death, and it's in the hands of time." My whole world closed in on me, a million memories came rushing through my head, the time Joey first grazed his knee, the day he learnt how to ride a bike, all these happy memories were suffocating me, making it hard to breath, and then...I blacked out.
END Point Of View
"Billie?!! Billie!!!??" I screamed, he had just fallen off his chair and was now lying still. The paramedic lifted him back up on his chair and put his head between his legs. After a few moments, he started coughing and some colour went back into his cheeks.
"Keep an eye on him, if it happens again just call," the paramedic said when Billie was stable enough to balance on his own. I nodded. Billie looked up at me
"He can't die! He can't, he just can't, I won't be able to live, I...I...I," he started muttering to himself. I just patted his back and spoke comforting words to him, I wish Adie was here, she'd know how to calm him...Adie...poor Adie, god knows what she must be going through now, she doesn't know anything, in the car, on her own. Poor poor Adrienne. The ambulance swerved and Billie was quiet for a minute, the ambulance screeched to a stop, and some paramedics opened the doors of the ambulance and took Joey and out and rushed towards the hospital. Billie and I waited outside for Adie to arrive, before walking in, to be confronted with the news...is he alive or not?
