His Little Drummer Girl, chapter 11
PART 11
... Backstage was amazing. The guys went to warm up and get ready for the gig. The kids wandered about awestruck. I sat and had a coffee with Adrienne.
"Listen to that noise" said Adrienne about the crowd cheering and screaming waiting for their gods to come on stage. "You know it still gives Billie a shiver down his spine before he plays listening to the crowd waiting for them."
The warm up acts had finished and we gathered on the edge of the stage ready for them to go on. There was me, Adi, Charlie and Francesca. The security guys had already told us that we could go down to the front and listen from there if we wanted a little later. Francesca held my hand, obviously she'd got over whatever seemed to be annoying her earlier.
The crowd were chanting now waiting for them "hey ho - let's go" they kept singing as one.
Then they were on and the roar was so load. Billie struck up the 1st few chords of American Idiot and the crowd went wild. It was wonderful to see.
What showmen. Billie Joe really could work the crowd. Everytime he shouted 'eey oh!' They shouted it back. Magnificent.
Occasionally Billie would go to the front of the stage where groups of girls would scream wildly and try and touch him.
"Just look at him" said Adi. "If only they could see him first thing in the morning in his underpants and stubble. Would they scream for him then?" She adored Billie Joe it was obvious to everyone. They were a perfect match.
They did a song called 'King for a Day' and Billie wore a robe and crown. Cute. I look over at Tre. My heart melted. This is what he does I thought. This is his life. Could I be a part of it? I loved him, I knew that. Just look at him. He wore a stupid flower hat for this song and he pulled the most hilarious of faces. He glanced over at me and winked. 'I love you' I thought smiling at him.
After this the three of us went un-noticed into the mosh pit at the front. It was so squashed up and everyone was jumping around like mad you couldn't help but join in. Francesca and Charlie were in their element.
We stayed there until the very end and Billie Joe took to the stage on his own for the wonderful 'Good Riddance' then all three of them went to the front of the stage and took a bow. Fireworks started up. The place was electric and we were all on a high.
The guys came off stage and group hugged. They hi-fived Jason White and all the other musicians involved and then came over to us.
Billie Joe hugged Adrienne, Mike and the kids hi-fived and Tre came right on over and swooped me up. He was damp with sweat but I didn't care, he still smelt good to me. He whispered in my ear. "You know what I could do right now?" he said. "Just to get another little look at that tattoo of yours."
"Oh Tre" I said, playfully smacking him and he grabbed my butt.
Everyone was so happy. We all had some drinks backstage and then headed back to the hotel in a coach. We sang along to some old stuff by the Clash and Ramones for a while. Then everyone quietened and some fell asleep. I was just dozing off when Tre came and sat in front next to Francesca. "Hey blue eyes" he said. "You awake?"
"MMMMM" I could hear.
"You wanna play on stage with me tomorrow?"
I could hear a sharp intake of breath from her.
"What you mean when you take the kids up on stage and let them play with you?" she said
"Exactly that" replied Tre.
"Awesome" said Francesca.
"I'll take that as a yes then" said Tre. "You'll have to go down to
the mosh pit though, but don't worry, Charlie will come with you and a security guard will keep an eye out. Do you think we'd better check with mum?"
"I can hear everything" I said "I'm sure it will be fine" I thought a little apprehensively.
I could hear them whispering and giggling together and then I noticed that Francesca had fallen asleep on Tre. He put his hand down beside the seat and reached for my hand. He squeezed it. Their two heads bobbed about on the coach as they slept. Father and daughter together.
Tomorrow would be their last day together unless I did something. I had to tell them and I knew it. I decided I would do it tomorrow after the gig...
