Lonely Roads, chapter 8

John walked to the trunk of his car, swinging his keyring around his finger. "Why wouldn't she want to be buried?" John asked himself as he opened the trunk of his car and ran through the items inside of it: A first-aid kit (Ha! What a laugh! John thought to himself), some empty water bottles, and some gardening supplies that John was going to give to his Mother (which is where he had been going to before he had hit the woman). Luckily, a shovel was among the gardening supplies.

John pulled the shovel out of the trunk and walked into the woods. He was afraid of the dark (had been for most of his life), so he didn't go too deep into the forest.

It took him over half an hour to dig the hole which he planned to bury the woman in, and John was overall happy with the end result of it: Over four feet deep, seven feet long, and the underbrush and dirt around it could easily be used to seal it up.

John walked back to his car, leaving the shovel behind, and turned on the headlights on his car so they could shine into the woods.

After that, John relunctantly grabbed the woman's ankles and dragged her lifeless body into the forest.

As John walked into the small clearing he had found to bury the woman's body in, he looked around. John thought that he was being watched for some reason.

Then the feeling left him.

John dragged the woman into the hole and started shoveling dirt onto her. Then John stopped.

He told himself that what he was about to do was going to make him feel bad, but he knew that he had to go through with it anyways.

John walked back to where he had hit the woman, looking for her purse. "Come on," He muttered. "Where are you, ya little son of aha!"

John reached onto the pavement and pulled a small brown leather purse out from under his car. He rooted through it, pushing past an inhaler, a wad of dollar bills, then he found what he wanted.

He pulled the woman's driver's licence from her purse and read what the woman's name was. Then he put it back into her purse and walked back to the clearing.

John put the purse inside of the hole with the woman, and quickly buried them. Once he was finished, John muttered "Goodbye, Laura Byers. Goodbye."

There? John asked himself. Feel better now?

"Yeah."He smiled at himself, proud of what he had done.

But, the truth remained, he had killed her.

But that didn't stop him from going back to his car, closing the passenger door behind him. There? Don't you feel better?

"Yeah," John Garrison said to himself, put the car into drive, and drove off into those lonely roads.
