She fired five times, but only one bullet pierced my skin.

I fell to the ground, already bleeding from the gunshot wound in my side. I turned around and looked at Arlene, standing in the kitchen doorway with the pistol still in her hands. I spat onto the kitchen tile and wasn't surprised to see that it was full of blood. "Why?" I asked Arlene weakly.

She didn't respond: Instead she turned around and walked out of the kitchen. I could hear her feet on the carpet, and the door open and close as she walked into the bedroom.

Then came the single shot.
