Objects In The Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear, chapter 5

I hadn't gone even two miles when I noticed the figure in the sideview mirror. I squinted my eyes to make sure I wasn't seeing things, but there it was: A figure in a black robe, a scythe in the person's left hand. With it's right hand, the thing was waving at me.

"What the Hell?" I asked myself, unsure of what I was seeing, thinking that maybe I had lost too much blood, but, looking down at the driver's seat, I saw barely any blood had fallen out of me since I had entered the Jaguar.

The figure in the sideview mirror wasn't very far away, but it just stayed there, no matter how fast I went (which is pretty fast. You ever driven a Jaguar? That's what I thought). It would just stand there, waving. It wasn't walking, it just seemed to . . . hover in mid-air.

I was feeling sick by then, and I put down the visor to look at myself. I was pale, and sweating profusley. I wiped my brow with my left hand and continued driving ahead.

I turned on the radio, and found a rock radio station: Just the kind of music I liked. Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi finsihed, and Don't Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult came on in it's place.

That's one of the things I like about radio stations: No matter what the situation, when you turn it on, it seems to playing the right song.

How was Don't Fear the Reaper (under normal circumstances, one of my favorite songs) perfect for the events that were transpiring at that time?

I changed the radio station, hoping to listen to something else, maybe a song that would get my mind of off the robed figure in the side view mirror. I changed the station . . .

And Don't Fear the Reaper was on the next station. It picked-up at the place that it had left-off from the previous station, so I turned to a different station, but all of the stations were playing Don't Fear the Reaper.

I looked into the rearview mirror and saw that the black figure had gotten closer somehow. I gasped in fear. Ten seconds ago, when I had first layed eyes upon it, it had appeared to be at least twenty feet behind the car. Now it seemed to be four feet behind the car.

That's when I noticed the print on the sideview mirror (and how could I had been so stupid as to not notice it until now?). It read: Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear.
