Untitled, chapter 7

"Hi Bill", said a cheery voice belonging to Michael Pritchard from the other end of the line. "How are you?"
"Mike!" Billie smiled and took a steadier clutch on the phone. "I'm fine... I think."
"I heard you came home today. I mean from the hospital."
"Yeah, I did. I'm glad you visited me."
Mike snorted.
"You gotta kid me. 'Course I did, did you think I'd leave you or something? Just cause you ended up there? No way, Bill."
"Do you know something Mike? You're a very good friend."
"Bill!" Mike snorted with laughter again. "Give up."
"Honestly, you are, Mike."

It was a silence between the boys.

"Thanks Billie. You... I like you too."
They both burst into laughter.

It hit Billie.
The first time he ever laughed since his father died. Somehow that made him laugh even louder.

"Dude..." Mike said between his laughs. "Dude, do you want me to come over?"
Billie panted. Pain welled over him again.
He was quiet for ten seconds.
"Hey Billie are you still there? Billie?"
Billie nodded unnecessary, Mike couldn't see him of course.
"Do you wanna be alone? Billie? I promise, it's alright."
"Mike don't take this personal or something now..."
"Not at all. I get it."
"Okay. Thanks. See you soon."
"Yeah, sure. Bye."
"Bye."

Billie ran out. This time, he knew where he was going.
It wasn't raining. The sun wasn't shining.
The world was describing how he felt exactly.

He reached the hill after ten minutes. He started climbing the steep ground and pulled himself up with the grass.
Billie crept to the top and settled down.
He watched the view in silence. The clouds slowly drifted away.

"I never thought that it could happen, dad..." he whispered, staring right forwards. "But... it did and now we can't... reach each other again..." Billie took a pause and swallowed. "I lost you dad... nothing will ever be the same... It wasn't your fault, neither mine or mom's or Allen's or anything. IT WAS THE WORLD!"
A tear trickled out of his eye.
"I miss you", he sobbed. "Mom said that you still live, inside of me... dad I don't think so... it's gotta be in another way... you were a part of me, but I lost that part... and I'll never get it back... Come back please... please dad..." Billie started panting through the hot tears pouring like a rain. "I know life is unpredictable... I understand that nothing is forever... well death is... I mean no one's forever. I know that. I always knew it. But why can't I understand when it really happens? WHY? Or do I understand, dad? Are there parts of me that I don't even know? I..."
He was unable to move. Something stole his attention.

A small, free brownish black bird flew across the sky. The world laid open underneath it.
And Billie knew.
