You're A Blur In My Dead Past, chapter 9
"Stay here Mags, it's too dangerous," Mike told me as he ran down the stairs
"No, I'm coming with you."
"MAGS! STAY HERE!" he yelled at me.
"NO!" I spat back at him. I wouldn't just stay here feeling useless. Myla was like a little sister to me, and I knew how much she meant Mike.
Mike took long strides as he walked fast down the street. I had to jog slowly to keep up with him. I noticed the moon was out in full force tonight, thank god. It meant that we wouldn't have to find her in the dark, and that we would have some assistance.
I ran up one side of the street as Mike ran up the other, searching ever alley, every nook and cranny for a sign of his sister. I had run past three alleys before I froze in my tracks. I heard rustling and looked around for where it could be coming from. I heard someone whimper and I started spinning around to find the source. My eyes finally settled on a dumpster a few feet back. I walked back to where I had just passed and peered around.
"Myla?" I whispered.
I heard more whimpering and the quiet sounds of sobbing.
I moved closer to the sound. "Myla? Is that you? It's me, Mags."
"Over here," I heard her whisper. I ran to her side and noticed that she looked quite distressed. Her hair was in tangled and messed up. Her shirt was ripped and one shoe was missing from her foot. I took a step towards her when I felt my foot step on something soft. I looked down and saw underwear lying next to her. I also saw that the zipper on her pants were undone.
Oh No. Not Myla, this couldn't be happening, not now, not to this sweet child.
"Come here Myla," I whispered, almost afraid to talk any louder. I held out my arms and felt the fragile child clamber into my grip. I wrapped my arms around her instantaneously and then the tears started.
I felt my shoulder dampen with the child's tears and I stroked her hair down.
"Are you hurt, Myla?" I asked her, waiting for the obvious answer.
I felt her nod her head, which made me cry even harder.
"Come on, let's go find Mike and get out of here."
I saw her pull away from me. "You can't tell Mike what happened to me. He'll get so upset. P-p-promise me you won't tell him?"
I nodded, "I promise."
I picked the girl up in my arms and she wrapped her arms around my neck. I looked around and picked up her underwear off the ground and shoved it into my back pocket and stepped out of the alley.
I looked around and spotted Mike just coming out his own alley, I could see the tears pouring down his face. I never like seeing him cry, it tears my heart into a million pieces.
"Mike! I Got her! Let's go!"
Mike ran his fastest over to me and hugged his sister.
"Myla, baby, are you ok?" he asked. She didn't respond and I shook my head for her. Mike's face seemed to fall more than it already had.
We walked home in silence. I rubbed the young girls back in an attempt to comfort her, but I knew that it was no use. How could someone do this to a girl? How could someone do this at all? I began a mental battle in my mind and I started to cry again. Mike must have noticed because he pulled me under his arm and kissed my temple.
When we got back to Mike's house, Gwen rushed up and grabbed Myla out of my arms and held her like there was no tomorrow. I stepped back to let everyone fuss over her. In the light I noticed that Myla was in even worse shape that I saw in the dark. Her face and hands we laden with dirt and tearstains seemed to have lined her cheeks. She had a cut above her eyebrow, which was bleeding slightly, and also covered in dirt.
Mike pulled me aside and into a hug.
"Thank you so much Mags."
"No need to thank me Mikey, she's like a sister to me and I know how much she means to you."
I kissed his cheek. "Did she tell you what happened?" he asked.
I shook my head and reached back into my pocket and pulled out her torn underwear.
His eyes widened while he looked at the contents of my hand. "Those are hers?" I nodded.
"Where did you find them?"
"They were next to her."
It clicked in his mind. "She.. she was.. "
"Raped," I whispered.
He took a step back and the tears sprang up to his eyes again. I ran into his arms and hugged him as hard as I could. "I'm sorry," I whispered again.
"Megan!" Gwen yelled from the other room. "Myla would like to see you"
I ran to her side and sat down.
"Can I talk to her alone?" Myla asked her mom.
"Sure sweetie," she replied, turning on her heels and leaving the room, Bianca, Tre and Billie following her.
"Thank you so much Mags, no one would have found me if it hadn't been for you."
I smiled as best I could despite the situation.
"You mean a lot to me Myla, I couldn't just leave you out there."
I hugged her and we stayed in silence for a moment.
"I told Mike what happened to you. I had to."
Her head shot up and her eyes filled with disappointment. "You promised me you wouldn't."
"He has a right to know Myla, he's your brother and he would give the world up to know that you're ok."
A tear slid down her cheek and I wiped it away. "He cares about you."
She nodded and buried her face in my shoulder again.
"Do you want me to tell your mom, or do you want to do it?"
"You would tell her?"
"If you want me to."
She nodded again and I kissed her cheek and walked out of the room.
"Gwen, can I talk to you?" I asked her mom, pulling her aside.
"Sure thing hon."
"I found these next to Myla," I said slowly, pulling out her underwear. "I think she might have been...r-raped."
Gwen screamed and fell to the ground. "Not my baby!"
I hugged her and broke down into tears yet again.
About an hour later, after all the tears had been shed, I sat next to Mike who sat expressionless on the couch. Tre had taken Bianca back to his house to stay there, since I would be staying at Mikes.
Gwen offered to wash my clothes because like Myla's, they were caked in dirt. I changed into a pair of Mike's boxers and t-shirts and went to see how Myla was feeling. I knocked on her door and she told me to come in.
"Hi, how are you feeling?" I asked her, sitting down next to her in her bed. She was clutching one of her oldest stuffed animals and a book.
She attempted a smile and nodded. "I'm fine."
I picked up her hand and stroked it softly with my thumb.
"Mags, you don't think I'll get pregnant, do you?"
I froze and dropped her hand. That question had never occurred in my mind, and from now on, I knew that it was going to haunt me for a long time.
"No, honey, I don't think so."
"Good. Mags, will you stay with me tonight?"
"Of course sweetie, just let me go tell Mikey."
"Ok."
I stood up and walked towards the door. I turned back just before I left and looked at the fragile being that had gone back to reading her book. How she could be so calm after all this drama was amazing. I knew that I would be in hysterics.
I padded down the hallway to Mike's room and pushed open the door.
"Mikey, I'm gonna stay in Myla's room tonight, ok?"
"Aww," he pouted, placing his hands on my hips and bringing me closer. "I was hoping to have you all to myself tonight," he smirked.
"Save your hormones for some other time, cowboy. Your sis needs me,"
"You're right. Sleep tight," He kissed me softly and my stomach did it usual flip every time that happened.
"Night."
I walked back to Myla's room and slipped under the covers with her. She moved closer to me and wrapped her arms around my waist.
"G'night My," I mumbled as I drifted into a deep sleep.
"No, I'm coming with you."
"MAGS! STAY HERE!" he yelled at me.
