Walking alone, the story of another broken home, chapter 1
Billie Joe could feel the blood rushing to his head. It seemed to hit him all of a sudden. He was going to be a father.
Was he ready? Would he be a good parent? It didn't really matter he realized, no matter how prepared he was in less than a few hours he was going to be a father. He sighed and placed his head on his hands. He started to have trouble breathing. This was not a good time for a panic attack.
"Don't you start now!" Adrienne said as she herself tried to breathe.
"I can't help it honey, this is freaking me out!" he whinnied.
"Billie Joe Armstrong, you're not the one with the kid coming out of you so I really don't want to hear about how you can't handle it," she snapped. Normally she would have been nicer, but out of many doses of painkiller and not a lot of sleep she wasn't really in a great mood.
"Sorry baby, really, you're right. I'm overreacting," he apologized. "I just need to take a walk. I'll be really quick, I promise."
"Okay, fine, but it better be short," she said, softer this time after seeing her husband's need to get some fresh air.
Billie Joe kissed her on the forehead and then departed from the emergency room where they were waiting. He strolled down the halls trying to get his thinking strait before realizing that he had gotten lost. He walked around looking for a directory or something to guide him when he suddenly stopped and turned around to the sound of a child screaming.
"DADDY, DON'T DO THIS!" Billie walked towards the sound. "DADDY, YOU PROMISED YOU'D ALWAYS BE THERE! COME BACK! DADDY!" He looked into the nearest room. To his surprise the door was open.
He peered in to see a state of utter chaos. There were doctors and nurses who were trying to get a man back to life it seemed. There was also a little girl, around four or five he'd say with tears coming down her face.
"DADDY, I DON'T WANT YOU TO GO! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS!" she screamed at a man who was lying in a hospital bed. She tried shaking him, as if it would wake him up. Billie wasn't a doctor, but he could tell that the man didn't have a great chance of waking up.
"Faith honey," one of the nurses said to the sobbing little girl, "I'm sorry to tell you this, but your daddy isn't coming back."
"NO! NO! NO! NO!" she screamed as she collapsed onto the floor crying. Billie felt tears coming into his own eyes.
"Honey," the nurse continued, "we can't find any relatives that can take you in. Do you know of anyone you know you want to live with?"
The little girl shook her head. Billie wanted to go and hug her. She looked so small. It reminded him of when he had lost his own father. At least he had somewhere to go after. She didn't.
"My daddy told me that it was just me and him. He said that god took mommy away with him," she said in between sobs. Billie's own eyes were filled with tears by this point. The nurse shook her head and mouthed something to a doctor. He nodded back.
"Well Faith, we have a good place for you to live with other little girls and boys who also lost their mommies and daddies," the nurse told her.
"I don't want to go. I WANT MY DADDY!" she sobbed. She was hysterical and beside herself. Billie Joe was also reaching that point. He could see that these people didn't care about her. They just wanted her out of the way.
He was considering saying something when someone came up behind him.
"Um, Mr. Armstrong, your wife is in labor."
"Oh fuck," he said as he raced down the hall. He had completely forgotten about Adrienne.
Two hours later Billie and Adrienne sat with their new son, Joey.
"He's perfect," Billie thought to himself as he wrapped his arms around his wife and cradled his son in his arms.
Then he suddenly remembered the little girl he had seen earlier. He hoped she was okay. Then he started to think about his own child. What would happen if he or Adie got sick?
Billie Joe then whispered something to his son, so softly that only Joey and Billie could hear. "I'll never leave you. I'll always be there. I promise."
Years went by but he never did forget that night. And the girl he had seen. Billie did always wonder what had happened to her... little did he know, she was so close by.
