Chumps And Chumpettes, chapter 19

I waited about half and hour before deciding to follow Billie upstairs. Very gently, I pushed open his bedroom door and was greeted with the sound of soft snores coming from a lump of sheets on his bed.

"Billie?" I whispered. I received no reply, and so, satisfied that he was sound asleep, I cautiously entered the room. It was pitch dark, and I couldn't see a thing. I stood for a while, allowing my eyes to adapt to the lack of light.

When I could see a little more, I started shifting around in the pile of clothes that were lying discarded on the floor. I saw a black jacket and picked it up in excitement, but soon realized it wasn't the one he was wearing earlier. In fact, it was an entirely different one from yesterday. With a sigh, I dropped the jacket back in its place on the floor.

"Damn dogs, get outta my house!" Billie muttered in his sleep, making me flinch. I had to stifle a laugh; he sounded so sweet. Then I realized, Billie had gone to bed wearing the clothes from earlier. He hadn't changed into pyjamas or underwear or anything at all. That meant that the note was still in his pocket.

"Dammit." I cursed under my breath. "Why is he so untidy?" I picked my way across the various piles of stuff all over the floor, slowly working my way towards the bed.
Tentatively, I lifted the corner of one sheet and looked at his calm sleeping face. I nearly melted, he looked so innocent.

But then he started muttering about dogs and stuff again, so I decided I had better hurry up and find the note. I pushed my hand into one of the pockets and found nothing. Gently, I pulled the fabric of his jacket around so I could reach the other pocket, and lo and behold, there was the note, a little crumpled, but still intact.

I went out into the hallway to read the note, creeping over the piles of stuff again to reach the door. The note was written very scurfily, however it wasn't difficult to read.

'I'm coming to your house tomorrow at midday. Make sure Amy is out of the house. Don't call the police, this is important. If you don't meet my demands, she will be hurt. '

My hand started trembling, and I had to put my hand over my mouth to stop me from crying out loud. What the hell was this? A joke? Didn't seem like it. Oh my God... Is it... Tré? At that point I made a decision. I wasn't going to leave the house tomorrow, no matter what. I had to find out the truth about this.

I crumpled up the note and made my way up to Billie's sleeping body. I reached across him and gently put the note back in the pocket. I was just turning away to get out, when Billie mumbled in his sleep, rolled over and grabbed my arm.

"Where do you think you're going?" Billie mumbled.
"Erm.... How long have you been awake for?" I asked Billie worriedly.
"Damn dogs... " Billie muttered and released his grip on my arm.
"Thank God that was only the sleep talking." I muttered to myself. I was just about to walk out of the room when Billie rolled over again and shouted (quite loudly)...

"BANANAS!"

I shook my head and smiled sleepily. "Thank you for everything." I said quietly, and I made my way to bed.

I didn't get much sleep though, I was worrying about the note.
What had it meant, 'she will get hurt? '... I devised a plan in my head; I was going to pretend to go out, but in fact be in hiding near the front door. Billie needn't know I was there at all.

The next morning I was up early, and started to (attempted to) make pancakes. When Billie came downstairs, I gave him one on a plate and started a conversation.

"So... Um... Billie, I was thinking that I might go out shopping today. You wanna come?"
"Er, well... I have this thing to do." Billie stuttered. God, he was really pale this morning.
"That's okay, I don't mind going on my own." I said cheerily. "Is it okay if I use the change from the food shopping last week?"
"Yeah... Sure."
"I'll leave at about quarter to 12... And I'll be back a couple of hours later."
"Perfect." Billie said, and made a smile. His eyes didn't share that smile, it was fake.

Billie seemed tense all the time I was talking to him, but I tried to act as if I didn't suspect a thing. When the clock reached 11:45, I grabbed my jacket and gave Billie a hug goodbye.

I then walked into the porch, opened, and closed the door, so it sounded like I had left. I then crept into a cupboard in the hallway, near to the front door that I had emptied in preparation earlier and I waited.

Soon, I heard a knock at the door, and I held my breath as I heard Billie's footsteps come to answer it.
