We Will Run Away Together Hand In Hand, chapter 23

It was another three days before Billie was allowed out of bed, even then he had to be wheeled about in a wheelchair. The first time Billie was out of bed Mike and Tre took him down to visit Rebel. They left Billie alone with Rebel for a while. Billie pushed himself to Rebel's bedside and held her hand in both of his. He hated to see Rebel this way but it seemed like he had to get used to it. Billie knew that Rebel could die, he didn't want to accept that possibility although it was hanging over him like a jet black storm cloud. He detested being in a wheelchair, feeling like an invalid. All Billie wanted was for Rebel to recover so he could hold her in his arms, feel her heart beat against his. A single tear escaped Billie's emerald eyes and trickled down his pale cheek. Billie's heart felt like it was going to implode from the immense sadness that was contained inside it. Billie sighed as a river of teardrops flowed from his eyes. Everything from the outside world seemed to melt away and all that existed was inside that hospital room. Every memory seeped from Billie's veins. All that mattered right now was Rebel's life which hung delicately in the balance. This really was a life or death situation for her.
Every now and then when Billie was back in bed he would stare at the starry night sky and somehow let go of all of the bad emotions then tied him to depression. He'd ask for God or someone in Heaven to take him and Rebel away from that place. Billie hadn't seen Taylor, he knew that all he'd get was abuse for bringing Rebel here and giving her the brain virus somehow.
One night when everyone was asleep on his ward Billie sat upright and swung his legs over the edge of the metal frame bed placing both of his bare feet flat on the tiled floor. Billie looked around, making sure that no one was watching him then tried to stand up. Failing on that Billie reached out of his wheelchair and eased himself into it. Billie wheeled himself to the door, opened it and wheeled out a little bit. Billie stopped and looked around, no one was around. Billie wheeled himself completely into the corridor then quietly closed the door behind him. Billie coasted down to the elevator, stopped, and pressed the button hoping that no one would see him. Whilst waiting for the lift Billie had to look around because if a nurse spotted him then he'd be taken back to his room and then he'd have to start all over again in trying to get to Rebel.
The doors opened and Billie pushed himself inside. Inside, alone in the lift, Billie stood up again and pressed button 7- Rebel's floor. Billie sat back down and adjusted himself in the chair so he was comfortable. A minute later the doors opened again and Billie wheeled himself out and down the same familiar corridor to the door that was between him and the woman he loved.
Billie pushed open the door and was surprised to see Taylor sitting in the room with Rebel. Taylor looked round and saw Billie in the doorway. Billie pushed himself into the room and closed the door behind him. He then wheeled himself to the other side of Rebel's bed.
Taylor's eyes never left her sister, she hadn't seen her in a while and had a lot to take in since the plane explosion. The cuts and bruises on Rebel's body were healing well and fast.
"Rebel always seemed to be so strong" Taylor said softly, "I was the only one that knew it was just a front. With every word that people said Rebel was hurt but she never let it show. I admire her sometimes, I'd never be able to live with the fact that I couldn't have children. Dominic is my life."
"I can never know what that feels like, not being able to have children. Jakob and Joey are my world. Taylor I love Rebel with all my heart and no matter what indifferences we have I want to make amends with you" Billie said, "If not for ourselves then for Rebel"
Taylor was about to say something when Rebel's arm twitched slightly. She and Billie looked at each other then at the woman lying in the bed. Rebel's left hand curled into a loose fist then relaxed again. Taylor and Billie held Rebel's hands and watched her in anticipation. Billie felt Rebel gently squeeze on his hand. Billie's heart was in his mouth, he was scared about Rebel waking up because she would always think she or someone else was going to die.
Rebel's eyes slowly flickered open, her pupils were large and black, the darkest of black. When Rebel opened her eyes all she could see was darkness, she looked around, still darkness. Just cold, darkness. She could feel someone hold her hands but she couldn't see them. Her chest tightened. Just then she heard someone talking to her, asking her if she could hear them. The beautiful Californian twang in Billie's accent made her smile.
"Billie Joe" Rebel said, "Why can't I see you?" she asked
Billie and Taylor looked at each other concernedly, why couldn't Rebel see them? Taylor went to turn on the light. Rebel heard the click but she still only saw darkness. Rebel looked around her, still only darkness. Her hands were shaking and sweating up. She was confused and scared. 'What the hell is going on? What's happening to me?' she thought to herself
"Billie why cant I see anything?" Rebel asked again, "Billie!" she called worriedly when there was no reply from Billie
"Hey sis don't worry we'll get a doctor" Taylor said
"Taylor?" Rebel asked, "Taylor where are you?"
"I'm here honey" Taylor replied squeezing on Rebel's hand
"Taylor I can't see anything" Rebel cried then heard the door open
"Alright what seems to be the problem?" a man's voice asked
"Who the hell is that?" Rebel asked, "Get them away from me!"
"I'm your doctor Miss Savage" the guy replied, "There's no need to be afraid"
Billie looked on concernedly as the doctor shone a light into Rebel's eyes to check the pupil response. Billie could see Rebel's fear. He was scared as well but even though Rebel couldn't see him Billie didn't want to show his fear, not to anyone. Billie and Taylor were ushered away back to their rooms.
Taylor sat on her bed staring out of the window. She knew her sister was blind, she just had this feeling that Rebel couldn't see anything. For how long though? She wasn't sure. It could be for life, first Rebel couldn't have children and now she's blind. Taylor pulled her iPod out of a bag that was brought up, put her headphones in and turned it on to hear 'Make Me Pure' by Robbie Williams. The acoustic guitar haunted her brainwaves, Taylor laid back to hear the lyrics drifting from the headphones. Taylor found herself singing along, almost in a prayer. Not to God but to her father. She often did that in times of fear and worry. At night Taylor would sit in darkness and pray to her father for security and at least some closure.
Some will sing a song
To reel 'em in
It's a song I sung before
And a song I'm gonna sing again
I mean every word
I don't mean a single one of them
Oh Lord, make me pure
- but not yet

Meanwhile Billie was sitting on his bed staring out of the window. The same sky, same buildings, same life stared back at him. His fiancée was blind and he could barely walk on his own. His mind was cast back to when Rebel had disappeared, the way he felt then was the same as the way he felt now. A part of Rebel had gone, was dead and buried. As much as Billie hated to accept that, it was a fact of life. He had to accept that whether he liked it or not. He turned on the stereo and continued to stare out of the window as the introduction to Melanie C's 'Never Be The Same Again' filtered through the speakers.
I call you up whenever things go wrong.
You're always there. You are my shoulder to cry on.
I can't believe it took me quite so long.
To take the forbidden step.
Is this something that I might regret?

(Come on, come on)
Nothing ventured nothing gained.
(You are the one)
A lonely heart that can't be tamed.
(Come on, come on)
I'm hoping that you feel the same.
This is something that I can't forget.

Shivers made their way round Billie's system making his skin tingle with an eerie feeling. It wasn't a sense of fear or even that someone was watching him, it was like someone or something had possessed him. He was becoming disconnected from himself and now he felt the unbearable urge for blood, sex and a hell of a lot of drugs. Billie licked his lips as his eyes travelled to his novocaine drip. His green eyes darkened to pure black, a smirk occupied Billie's lips.
"Billie we meet again" a voice said, no one else was in the room
"Jimmy... you've returned to me my old friend" Billie said, "Give me novocaine" he whispered full of evil, reaching out for the novocaine bag, an evil smirk plagued his lips and a sinister laugh escaped him.
Mike and Tre were walking together through the corridor up to Taylor's hospital room. Mike opened the door and Taylor looked at him and Tre. She looked at the pair of them for a moment then looked back at the ceiling blankly. The two members of Green Day stepped into the room and closed the door behind them. Taylor still stared at the ceiling. She wasn't in the mood for talking but she couldn't turn the guys away. Maybe she could sit in silence and the guys would leave of their own accord.
"Taylor? How are you feeling?" Mike asked
"My sister is blind. How do you expect me to be feeling?" Taylor asked coldly
"Told you it was a stupid question" Tre whispered
