What Are You Going To Do, Billie?...Kill Me?, chapter 17
"Mike doesn't really keep this car clean," Cali said, as she pushed the rubbish away from here feet. Billie took his eyes off the road for a second and looked down to her feet, seeing candy wrappers and bottles.
"What can i say? Us guys are lazy," He put his eyes back on the road, the day was bright. The Californian sun was shining bright and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. She looked out the window, looking at the highway signs.
"Now leaving Oakland city." She read.
They were going to San fransico, after telling Ollie and Mike that they were going to see if there were going to be any gigs that Green Day could play at. Well that was the excuse, Ollie Believed it and so did Mike. Atleast that's what they thought.
"Tommy gives a good punch," Cali pointed out, looking at the scar on his right eyebrow.
"I didn't just let him punch me," He said, with an annyiod tone. Since last night, after helping Billie clean himself up Cali hadn't spoken to Billie. She kept herself away from him until the morning, then they spoke about going to San Fran, they agreed to go and they went with the 60 dollors in Billie's wallot and a packet of potato chips that Cali had taken.
She turned her head back to the wiindow and kept looking. She got the hint that Billie really didn't want to talk about it...
He looked at her, she was looking like she was in a daze. Her hand kept her head up and her other hand rested on her knee. He took one hand of the wheel and placed his hand on her's. She felt his hand and looked over to him, his eyes were on the road, his thumb soflty rubbed the top of her hand. He looked at her once and smiled and turned his head back. The was silents before he spoke up, with his hand holding her's.
"This things i get into makes things harder, but once that's over with, everything will be fine..." He said, keeping his eyes focused on where he was driving, she smile to herself.
*
"That'll be $52.60." Billie handed the lady the only money they had and then he got the change and them the drinks. He walked back to the car, where Cali was waiting. She was tsanding next to the petrol pump, looking our the station. She saw Billie coming.
"Coke? How much money do we have left?" She asked as he stood infront of her.
"Well i'm thirsty, and the petrol costed 50, and the 2 bottle costed $1.30 each...I onyl have $7 left..." She sighed.
"I don't even think that the petrol we have will get us back to Rodeo,"
"We're taking risks remember? Y'know..." She laughed once he said that, he lent up against the car and handed her the glass bottle of coke, and then he opened his own. She didn't open the bottle, they would probebly be needing it for later.
"Risks my ass, i bet that when we get back to Oakland the car will stop and we will be pushing it the rest of the way home." He took a sip of the coke and looked at her, he shrugged and looked the other way.
"Oh well," She held in her laughter and shook her head.
"Well you'll be the one pushing the car back," He looked at her. The sounds of cars rushing by on the highway was heard, the car was parked in one of the lanes, since the petrol station was quit they didn't bother moving the car.
"Oh you'll be pushing too, I will force you too..." He said with and evil grin, she nudged him with her shoulder.
"Yeah, whatever."
Once they were on the road again they got pretty bord, San fran was only 15 minutes away so they decided to play eye spy until they got there.
"I spy with my eye something begining with G," Cali said, Billie looked at her and looked back to the road, he thought for a second.
"Green, the green on the trees." She laughed.
"And where can you see trees on a highway BJ?" He grinned.
"I don't know, I give up. Tell me,"
"Well you got the green right, but it wasn't trees,"
"What is it?" He asked, as he once again quickly looking over to her and back to the road.
"Your eyes." He smiled, it was sort of a grin...Like he was really happy, but it was still a smile.
They finaly arrived in San Fransico, but they weren't knowing where they were going to go, we could you go in California with 7 dollors?
"Let's go to the dock, I heard it's pretty cool there...We could just hang around there if you want." He suggested.
"We have no where else to go,"
Billie parked the car in some parking lot that was near the boat dock. They both walked down the busy side walk, Cali held onto his hand. The city looked pretty big, if she got lost without him what was she going to do?
"I can smell the sea water, it's thata way!" He said, like he was some kind of super hero. The best thing about him making stupid jokes..Was making her laugh...... She just laughed and followed his lead.
As they go closer to the dock Cali looked out to the sea, the San Fransico bridge could be seen, and heaps of boats. The water looked so blue from a distance, a royal blue. Billie laced his fingers with hers as they walked side by side, it was a nice feeling. Not having to worry about hiding anything. After they walked across the grass they got to the sidewalk, there was a fence and over the fence was the water.
They both slung their arms onto the fence and looked out to the water. They didn't say anything, the silents was what they both needed. For the past year noise crouded both of there minds. So it was a good time for peace.
"Daddy! I want a new dress! Buy me the new dress daddy!" Cali looked over once she heard a little girl whining, over at a bench there was a little go. No older than 4. And there was her father, who was reading a news paper. Ignoring the little girl.
"Daddy listen to me! Mommy said that the dress was only 10 dollors! Can you please buy me the dress? Daddy!" The little girl cried, Cali looked over to Billie he was off in his own little world. She looked back to the little girl, she could see the tears streaming down her face. "Daddy please! You said you would buy me something for my birthday!" The girl cried, Cali felt pretty sorry for the girl.
"Lilly stop crying! I haven't got any money!" The father said, taking a grip of the little girls wrist. The guy looked like he had money, seeing as though he was wearing a suit and all. The girl stopped her crying by holding the tears back.
"Daddy why can't you buy this? We need milk daddy..."
"Cali, we can't afford all that milk, we have to give back some of the food..Because daddy can't pay for it..." Cali snapped out of the memory. She remembered that day, she was only 8. They were paying for food at the super market. But they couldn't afford all of the food they wanted, so they had to put it back. Cali heard her parents fighting over her dad gambling all their money away the next day. Cali hadn't noticed, but the father and the crying girl had gone, she looked over to Billie once again, he looked back at her. He noticed the girl too.
Cali looked at his face, the sun was shining down on his skin, making it shine with yello. His dreadlocks seem to cover his face, she smiled.
"Billie...Do you miss your dad?" He looked down to the water, he didn't want to be asked that. He looked the other way.
"Yeah, too much." He said. She looked down to the water.
Cali took his hand, making him turn to face her. She softly kissed his lips, which seemed to be a touch warm from the sun. She pulled away and rubbed his cheek with her thumb. He kissed her and they both went and sat on the bench where the father and girl were.
"I wonder where i'm going to be in 5 years, i sure as hell didn't think i was going to be here 5 years ago." Billie said, Cali laughed.
"I wonder where we'll be tomorrow, i think we will be still pushing the car back." He laughed.
"You will be helping me..." She shook her head.
"I will be watching you suffer," She said, looking down to threw the cracks of the bench.
"I told you before we came here that i only had 60-" He stopped talking once Cali had got up, he watched her bend down then pick something up from under the bench. "Holy shit, whose wallot?!" He yelled out looking at the wallot in Cali's hands.
"It must be that father that was sitting here before, his drivers licence is in here." Billie stood up as well, looking at the licence. Cali unzipped the zipper of the wallot and took out what seemed to be 300 dollors. And it was.
"Holy fuck!" Billie yelled out, Cali grinned as she held the money.
"And that asshole said he didn't have money..." Billie laughed.
"Looks like we won't be pushing the car back," He said.
"I'm hungry, let's get something to eat...I'm sure that guy has more where this came from..." Cali said grabbing Billie's hand as she walked in the direction of the city.
"That food was crap!" Cali yelled out, after they both got kick out of the resturant for yelling and laughing loud. Billie hung his arm over Cali's shoulder while he laughed.
"Atleast we got it for free," He said with a laugh. She grinned to him and kissed his cheek. At that monet she was the happiest she had ever been, they weren;t really doing anything to great, but just being with Billie made her happy.
They walked down the sidewalk, the sun was starting to go down. Cali was looking at the shops as they walked by. She saw this one shop.
"Tattoos..." She read after stopping, Billie also stopped.
"You wanna get a tattoo?" He said, kinda shocked that she would even want one.
"Yeah! Let's get one!"
"No, no, no." He protested. "He have to get back before it get's dark..."
"Come on Billie Joe! Don't be a whimp, we're s'pose to be talking risks!" She pleaded with puppy dog eyes that he couldn't avoid.
"Oh O.k, we have money to burn..." She grinned and then she dragged him into the tattoo place.
The door opened with a bell sound and Cali dragged Billie over to the counter.
"We're about to close," A large man said from behind the counter, he a tattoos all the way up both arms.
"We won't take long mister, please...We have money," Cali pleaded.
"Cali their about to close," Billie said, pulling at her arm. But she wouldn't budge.
"Please mister?"
"Oh o.k, but nothing big..Come on in."
Billie stood by and watch Cali as she got her tattoo, she had decided to get stars on her arm. He didn't know how much it was going to cost, he was just hoping it would take all of the money.
"Oww," Cali cried out. Billie giggled at her, she gave him the evil eye and kept watching the man tatto a small red star on her wrist, right on the bone, there were 3 other stars, one was a big blue one on her upper arm and ther were 2 other small ones near the big one. And they were green and yello. She didn't know why she wanted stars, they just looked good. So she got them.
"I think i've seen you before," The man said as he finished up Cali's tattoo.
"Me?" Billie said.
"Yeah, have you ever been to gilman in Berkekely?"
"Yeah, me and my band play there sometimes..."
"I think i've heard you play, Green Day?" Billie smiled.
"Yeah,"
"Your band is good," The man simply said. "How about this? i'll give both of you kids tattoos for a 100, since i know your band and all..."
"Thanks!" Cali said, her skin was stinging.
"That would be cool," Billie said.
*
"That fucking hurt..." Billie whined after they both walked out of the shop. Cali looked at his arm, a vine went around his fore arm.
"But it was worth it, it looks really good, and only for a 100," Cali said, avoiding her tattoo, it was so itchy.
"You know why i got this tattoo?"
"No why?" She asked. They were alsmost to the car.
"Because your growing on me like a vine..." She stopped walking, he turn to her. She didn't know what to say after that...
"Thanks Billie," She said, with a tear that almost creaping out of the corner of her eye. That one sentance did that to her, she couldn't believe it. And thanks was all she could say?!
They finaly got back to the car, Billie opened the door for her and she sat down. He went to his side of the car and sat down, they both sat there for a minute. Not saying anything at all. Cali though about what he had said, she felt this overwhelming sence of feeling cave in on her. It took over her whole body and her mind.
Billie looked at Cali, she was staring ahead of her, the car park was getting kind of dark as they sun went further down.
"Cali," He softly said, she snapped out of her thought and looked at him. He was looking at the vine. He wasn't sure of how to say it...Or how he could discribe it so he ended up saying.
"I'm in love with you..."
She couldn't even speak, he looked to her. He saw one tear drop from the corner of her eye.
"Good, 'cause i'm in love with you too..." She said, as another tear fell from her eye, she laughed and then quickly went t kiss him. It forced him back against the window, he grinned as her lips moved along with his. He softly pushed her forward and evetually they were climbing to the back seat of the car.
He could barly catch his breath, he lay of ontop her with only his hand to keep him from colasping on her. She giggled as she looked up to him, she ran her hand up from his back to the his neck, she brought his head closer to her and kissed him.
"It seemed like forever since we have done that," He said, after catching his
breath. She gentaly pushed back a dread lock that was hunging down.
"I know..." She grinned.

The sky had completly fallen dark over San Fransico, Billie was driving down the high way again, but this time it was to go back home. Cali turned her head and looked to the back window, the sky was so dark you could barly see the stars. But the city lights filled the sky, it was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen. The feeling it gave her, it was perfect. She could watch it forever, all the different kinds of lights making one whole scene. The city feeling was fading away as they drove further away, once it could be seen anymore she turned around again.
"Best feeling isn't it?" He asked, he knew that feeling aswell.
"Yeah..."
Billie parked the car on the driveway, they both hurried inside out of the freezing cold. Back to the small town life...
"Your back!" Ollie said as soon as Billie crashed through the door.
"Yes we are," He said, being attacked by his mom hugging him.
"How was the big city Cali?" Ollie asked hugging her aswell.
"It was great..." She anwsered, hiding her tattoos with the sleeve of her black jacket. Or Billies jacket...
"I'm going to sleep...Night mom, Cali." Billie said, running up the stairs to his room. He didn't want to give anything away... So he left, Cali stood in the kitchen with Ollie.
"Do you want some coffee?"
"No thanks, never really like coffee." Cali anwsered nicely.
"Can i ask yo something?" Cali started to feel abit nervious. Ollie sat down at the table with a cup of coffee.
"Ah, sure..." Cali said as she sat down across the table from her.
"You and Billie seemed to be good friends," Ollie said, getting closer to her question.
"Not really, we're just friends...He is probebly the only friend i have right now." Oliie felt a twist of sadness for her.
"I understand, but sometimes when you have a friend that's a guy...You sometimes get a stronger feeling for them, Y'know?" Cali looked down.
"If your going to ask if i like Billie more than a friend, i don't," She said, giving in a fake laugh.
"Oh, o.k...But if you do-"
"-Trust me Ollie, we're only friends..." Ollie smiled.
"Well everything is fine then," Cali raised an eyebrow.
"I s'pose it is."
"You must be tired, i am..I'll see you in the morning dear, good night..." Ollie went to bed, Cali sat at the kitchen table remembering what happened that day. She went over in her mind with how she first met Billie and then what happened after that, it was like she was replaying her whole life. She hated looking at the past and where she had been and the people she had seen, but what scared her more was when that one question came up.
[i]"What am i ment to do now?"[i]
Her future.
That night when she lay awake in her bed that once question kept coming to her mind. There was no way she could anwser it, she was alone. All she had was herself, and she didn't like that.
What she couldn't see was who was around her, what was the good things that were happening to her. All the bad stuff just crouded that.
She got sick of thinking of it, she creeped out of her bedroom and tip toed down the hall to Billies room, she slowly opened the door and walked over to his bad. He was sleeping on his side, it was if he hadn't had a care in the world. She lifter the covers and slid in next to him, she put her arm over his narrow waste and held onto his hand. She wasn't surprised when she felt his grip tighted just a little bit...
"What can i say? Us guys are lazy," He put his eyes back on the road, the day was bright. The Californian sun was shining bright and there wasn't a cloud in the sky. She looked out the window, looking at the highway signs.
