A Wish For That Second Chance, chapter 1

Have you ever wished you had a second chance in life with a certain some one? Well that's what I wished. But now as I'm growing up, that wish is becoming thin and is fading away. I'm Kris Johnson and I'm now 24 and going nowhere and nowhere fast. I live in the same old town that I always lived in, Berkeley California. The city that I recall of the dead, misleading and confusion everything and everyone going nowhere. It was the city of the damned.

Beep Beep Beep "Fuck damn alarm!" I shouted as I glanced at the clock that read 12:30. I overslept and was late again for work. I quickly ran to the bathroom and brushed my teeth, put some eyeliner on and went running towards my room again. I pulled my closet doors open took at a Ramones t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. I then went running toward the front door when I noticed I had no shoes on. I pulled out my converse, slipped them on, and grabbed my bag running out the door.

I decided to catch a cab but it wasn't going to get me there any quicker. I got to work at the coffee shop 45 minutes late. I knew my boss was going to kill me. I quickly put on an apron and pinned my hair up.
"Hey Kris," a soft voice said from behind, it was my best friend Amy.
"Hey," I said in return.
"Brad is not in a good mood today and you're late again Kris, this is the third day in a row, is there some guy you're not telling me about?"
"No, no not at all. I worked late last night at the dinner and my alarm clock didn't go off until 12:30. And no, I'm not dating any guy, I haven't seen anyone since Jason." I said quickly while taking an order from an angry customer.
"Sorry sir it will be ready in 10."
"KRIS, KRIS get in my office now!" yelled an angry voice.

I quickly walked to the office and sat down ready to explain my story.
"You're late again!" shouted Brad.
"I know, I'm sor..." I was cut off by Brad
"I don't want to hear it. It's the same damn story day after day." he said before softening his voice so he can then drop the big bomb.
"I'm going to have to let you go."
"But... I really need this job. Please just give me one more chance. I...I promise not to be late again, I really do."
"I'm sorry Kris but you said that last time. You can finish today and get this weeks pay, then you're done."
I then fought back, I let it all out. All of it, "Well I'm not going to finish this shift. I QUIT!", I yelled angrily as I slammed the door behind me as I then made my way to the nearest exit.
"You can't quit, I fired you!" shouted Brad. I then gave him the finger as I mumbled to myself 'damn bastard.' I then continued to walk down the street to my next job at the dinner.

Back at the coffee shop all the guests were horrified and an elderly lady passed out, she was in shock. Amy just stood there with her hand over her mouth. Brad then spoke," What the hell are you all looking at there nothing to see here. Get back to work!"

I finally got to my other job and then the tears started flowing rapidly. A guy walked by staring, I hated crying especially when someone was looking.
"What the fuck are you starring at?" I shouted. The guy mumbled something to himself and hurried himself down the street. I whiped my eyes and went into work, I was 30 minutes early but I could care less.

I then walked to the bathroom to clean myself up. I was only in there for 5 minutes when someone else entered. It was Adie. Adie and I were friends when we were younger and just started talking again a year ago. She's always there for me and friendly, and just great to talk to. She walked over to me and gave me a hug.
"What's wrong Kris?" she asked.
"Well let me start. I had to work late last night and then this morning my trusty alarm clock went off late so I was 45 minutes late to work. My boss then insisted to fire me, but I stormed out yelling I quit. I heard a loud noise on my way out, I think someone fainted, I hope it was Brad."
"Is that all?" Adie insisted to ask, she knew me all too well.
"No that's not all. Amy asked if I was seeing another guy because I've been late to work lately. So of course I mentioned Jason, and that's really why I'm crying. I miss him so much but I really don't know why."
"I know, I know. It's going to take a while but you'll get over it, it's just going to take time." Adie said sympathetically.

If you're wondering who Jason is, well he's my ex. No he did not break up with me, I broke up with him. Well he was cheating. Adie and Amy tried to tell me but I didn't believe them. I was, well am in love with him, but it turned out he wasn't in love with me. I of course found out for myself the day before our anniversary. He had the little bitch over at MY house. I threw them both out of course after a long fight. Two days later he said he was sorry and that he was moving to New York for a job, well a job my ass, he was moving there with her. I was glad then but after two more days I actually missed him. But I'm not sure why, I'm mean I thought I loved him but love is confusing and who knows I think it was just mixed feelings.

I finally started to stop crying as I knew I had to pull myself together, I had to work in 10 minutes.
"Are you feeling better?" Adie asked.
"Yeah actually, I am."
I then put on some makeup and tried to comb my hair, but it wasn't easy.
"Need help?" Adie giggled.
"No I got it." I threw it up into a messy bun.
"Oh before I forget, I have to tell you something, Kris it's important I think." Adie said.
"Can you tell me later at dinner at your house?"
"But you might... " I cut her off
"I got to get to work, I can't be late." I said as I walked out the door
"Okay, just some old friends will be here, that you haven't seen in five years." Adie said to herself.
