Hitchin' A Ride, chapter 3
*Still Kimberley's POV*
We didn't say anything, but I know we were both thinking the same thing: Holy shit! Never in my wildest dreams, well maybe my wildest, had I ever pictured actually meeting him. My sister idolized Billie Joe Armstrong, and here he was, standing before us, with a curious look on his 30-something-year-old face.
"Hey girls, are you okay?" He asked in a concerned tone, but both me and Emily seemed to have lost the ability to speak, her more than I.
Trying to recover, and not embarrass myself (even though this 20-mile walk had done its damage), I managed to say, "Yeah, I'm fine...we're fine. It's just hot, we were, uh, walking." I finished stupidly.
He seemed to find my response somewhat amusing as he said, "Yeah, I saw. How about you?" he said while looking at Emily, "are you okay?"
Emily was still standing there with her mouth open. I nudged her in the ribs before she snapped out of it and squeaked, "I'm fine."
I almost rolled my eyes and Billie Joe looked like he was about to laugh. "Are you guys sure? I mean, do you need a ride or something?" Emily eyes, if possible, got wider.
"Oh no, I don't want it to be any trouble for you guys..." I started before he interrupted me.
"No, no, not at all! We're actually ahead of schedule." I nodded.
"So what do you say?" he said expectantly.
I only had to take one look at Emily's face before answering "Sure," automatically.
"Okay, cool!" He said happily, and started leading the way towards the door of the bus. "Now let's get on the bus before you spontaneously combust!"
Em seemed to snap out of it and burst out, "Hey, that rhymed!" Me and Billie Joe started laughing and Emily blushed and became silent again.
Billie Joe got in the bus and beckoned us to come in after him. Me and Emily looked at each other and nervously shuffled towards the bus. I almost tripped as I climbed the huge steps, Emily's hand clutched tightly in mine. I heard her whisper, "Smooth, Kim." and I rolled my eyes. Damn chains.
Another jaw-dropping incident occurred when we stepped into the bus and saw none other than Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool standing there looking at us curiously. This time wasn't so bad because their presence was somewhat expected. I still had to control my breathing and face temperature though.
"I'm pretty sure from your facial expressions you already know who we are." said Billie Joe in an amused tone. "So I'll skip that part. Mike, Tre, this is...." he paused, "oh shit, um, what are your names?" he asked looking slightly embarassed.
"Oh, I'm Kimberley." I said, walking over and shaking their hands. I got a bit of a shock when Tre kissed my hand and said, "Pleasure."
"And this is my sister Emily." I said, directing my hand towards Em, who stood on the side and waved awkwardly. Billie, Mike and Tre walked forward and shook her hand, and this time she got a kiss on the hand, only it was from Mike. She blushed a deep red as I shook Billie's hand in turn.
"Hey Bill, why have we stopped? Is there something wrong?" An average height woman with dark brown dreadlocks stepped out of a room I guessed was a bathroom and stopped when her brown eyes settled on us. I fought the urge to gasp. She's even prettier in person!
"Oh, hi there! I'm Adrienne. Where did you girls come from?" She asked kindly, stepping forward and shaking our hands. Other than telling her our names, Emily and I were at a loss for words again. Thankfully, Billie Joe answered for us.
"We saw them walking alongside the road and we stopped for them. we figured they must be hot. Shut up Tre!" He said, looking back at Tre, who was now eyeing me and Emily from top to bottom. Everybody else laughed while we blushed.
"Stop it Tre." Adrienne said, though she was still smiling. "I don't think these girls are old enough for that kind of a look from you."
"Actually, I'm 22." I said proudly.
"And I'm 18 today." added Emily.
"Now I really feel old!" Tre said with disappointment. "It's frustrating how hot the young ones are nowadays!" He finished with a wink to Emily.
"Amen." said Mike, and he grinned at me. Is it possible to blush so many times within 5 minutes?
"Okay boys, settle down." Adrienne said. Both Mike and Tre pretended to look admonished, but we could tell they were fighting back smiles, and me and Emily started laughing.
It was sweltering in my sweater, so I started to unzip it, and Em followed suit with her sweater. "Could we put these somewhere?" I asked, indicating our sweaters in our arms.
"Oh, just put it on that chair." said Billie. We did as we were told and Em laid her sweater out on top of mine.
Billie noticed Emily's sweater and said, "Hey, you know Adeline Street?"
Emily seemed excited, "Yeah, anybody who's ever been associated with me knows about Adeline!" Billie smiled.
"Hmmm...I didn't think it was that popular." I could tell Emily was fighting back a laugh.
"Wow, I like your blouse. Where did you get it?" Adrienne asked, referring to the dark purple cropped-tee with a black vest/corset combination I had on.
"Thanks, I made it." I said shyly.
"Cool." was all she said and smiled at me.
"I made this one too." I said, picking up my black zip-up hoodie from before. It had the numbers '80' over the word 'ROCK' in big purple letters, with an even bigger 'S' on the right side. "Or, I designed it anyway."
"Could I see it?" Adrienne asked. I handed it over and Billie Joe went to sit by her to get a closer look at it, too. They looked like they were trying to figure something out. "Is it supposed to say '80's ROCK'?"
I smirked.
"Well, that's what most people think it says, but my original intention was for it to say '80 ROCKS'. A lot of people didn't get it though, so I designed like that for them to make their own interpretation." A knowing smile passed between the three of us before Billie Joe said, "Clever," and Adrienne nodded.
I blushed a small thanks before turning my attention to the other side of the couch. Emily was locked in a thumb-war with both Tre and Mike at the same time. They seemed to be teaming up against her, because Tre was flailing his legs to distract her while Mike pinned her thumb down. I laughed when Emily simply said, "Damn." and started laughing.
"Excuse me Mr. Armstrong?" A tall gangly man with a goatee and a bowler hat stepped out from the driver's area. "Are we to be going now?"
"Yeah, we are. Girls, this is Tom, our beloved driver. Tom, this is Kimberley and her sister Emily."
"Nice to meet you girls." he said while shaking our hands.
"Likewise, Tom." me and Emily both smiled politely.
"So I'm assuming we're going to be dropping you two off somewhere?" We both nodded. "Where at?"
"Oh, it's not far, it's in Saint Michaels." Emily said. The driver looked puzzled.
"Right. That's a mile east of Window Rock on this same highway." Emily elaborated. The driver nodded and resumed his position in the front of the bus.
As we heard the air-brakes turn off and felt the bus start to move, Emily grabbed my hand and we both had to fight down squeals of excitement. We're catching a ride with Green Day in their own tour bus! Thank you, God.
"So," Mike said, leaning back in his seat and putting his arm on the back of the couch, "Now would be a good time to start your story about why you have a fascination with burning yourselves alive in the desert."
