Billie Joe - 3rd Grade, chapter 3

Andy dropped Billie Joe off at school the next day. Billie peered quietly out the window, looking for the girl. He saw her sitting on the lunch tables, reading a book. He swallowed and sunk low in the car seat.

"So thats her at the tables i'm guessing..." Andy said, peering out at Tricia. Billie nodded, and went slightly pale. Andy smiled.
"You're genuinely terrified of her aren't you?" he asked, as Billie nodded.
"Well, you know what you should do?" said Andy, looking at Billie, who was wishing he never threw the paper bag in the trash. He could be wearing it right now...

"I think you should ask her why she did it. Just go on up and ask her son, and if she hits you, catch her punch like i showed you and then come back to the car and you can come home." Andy suggested, knowing the girl was as tiny as Billie, knowing she couldn't do a lot of damage.

Billie sighed a heavy breath and nodded, hopping out of the car and walking slowly through the gate, sitting beside Tricia and feeling his heart speed up. Andy watched from the car.

"H-Hi...Tricia." Billie said, wincing as Tricia looked up at him from her book.
"Hello." Tricia replied sweetly, smiling at Billie. Billie looked suspicious.
"Erm..watcha readin?" he asked, not daring to touch the book.
"This is my diary. You can't read it till we get married." Tricia replied, closing it and hugging it to her chest. Billie wanted to be sick.

"Er...yeah, about that, um, i was just...wondering...why did you have to hit me? Why didn't you just ask me to be your boyfriend? I'm not even sure if i like you yet." Billie said without meaning to, immediately regretting it. Tricia was looking down at her feet.

"Um..I mean, that, well, it hurt! And, you don't have to hit me, you could just talk to me, I'm not hitting you now I'm just ta-" Billie started before being met by Tricia's furious stare.
"Well maybe you should start Billie Joe." She hissed, glaring at him. Billie backed away.

"Start what?" he asked, dumbfounded.
"HITTING ME!" Tricia yelled, before kicking Billie in the stomach. Billie doubled over and cried out in pain before looking confusedly up at Tricia, who was now crying.

Andy started to move in the car, but stopped himself, wanting to give Billie a chance.

"Tricia, I'm not allowed to hit girls! Why would I want to?" Billie Joe asked, rasping for air. Tricia punched him in the nose before sitting down next to him again. Billie's nose started to bleed.

Andy now opened the door, starting to hop out.

"STOP IT TRICIA! WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU HITTING ME FOR?!" yelled Billie in frustration, wiping his nose. Tricia was very timid and quiet now.

On hearing and seeing this, Andy hopped back into the car.

"You're turn..." she said, pointing to her cheek.

Billie was shocked. His turn?

"Tricia I don't want to hit you..." Billie said softly, hoping Tricia would be nice back.
"No man is a man unless they hit their woman." Tricia said, crying softly.
"Who told you that?" asked Billie, looking at Tricia's diary. He noticed it had bad words written on the back cover of it. Mean words. Bitch, slut, whore...Billie knew what they meant.

"My mummy." Tricia said, hugging her diary closer to her. Billie began to understand. He felt immensly sorry for her. It wasn't her fault...she obviously didn't have a daddy like he did, or a mummy like he did. She had bad parents. He knew his was waiting for him in the car, waiting to give him a hug. He didn't know what hers were doing but he knew it wasn't good.

"Well...thats not what my mummy told me..." Billie said quietly, but Tricia didn't seem to pay attention to him. She just kept crying. And she looked so sad, so hurt. Billie felt horrible, even if he didn't do anything. He also felt another urge. He didn't know what it was but maybe if he took his mother's advice Tricia would stop crying...

Billie leant in and kissed Tricia on the cheek. Tricia looked shocked at Billie, touching her cheek. The cheek she'd wanted him to hit was now filled with a different sensation...one she wasn't used to.

"No man is a man unless they kiss their woman." Billie said, before getting up and leaving to go back to the car. He didn't want to stay with Tricia. He wanted to give her some time to think things over.

And he needed some time to as well.

Because now...he thought he loved her.

Billie wandered back to the car, as his dad opened the door for him. Billie immediately fell into his fathers arms, giving him a hug and telling him what Tricia had told him on the car trip home. Andy didn't approve, but knew Billie and him had to help her.
