Billie Joe - 3rd Grade, chapter 4
Billie Joe was determined to show Tricia she wasn't alone. His father had put words of confidence into him and he walked ambitiously up to Tricia, who was sitting on the seats at school and writing in her diary again. She turned to him and just gave him a blank look. Her face was gaunt and pale and she looked scared. Billie sat down beside her.
"Whats wrong Tricia?" he asked, sitting down and holding her hand. He immediately saw several bruises up Tricia's arm. They were small, but if you looked, you really could notice them.
"That." Tricia whispered frightendly, pulling her arm away.
"I don't like what they do to you Tricia, its not right. My daddy says that you can come have dinner at our house tonight because he wants to meet my girlfriend." Billie said in rush of breath. He'd never asked a girl out before. He hoped she didn't have cooties. Or this other type of cooties his brother got from a girl that his mum yelled at him for for a very long time.
"I can't...my parents..." Tricia managed to say.
"My daddy said he'd talk to them if you want." Billie said quietly, smiling at Tricia. It was the end of school day, and Billie's dad was waiting for Tricia's parents to come pick her up. Billie's dad watched the two young lovers from the car. Tricia suddenly threw herself into Billie's chest and sobbed. Billie was frightened as well, but hugged her back.
"I don't want to go home Billie, they're horrible, they're scary, they're so mean..." Tricia cried, grabbing onto Billie's shirt and scrunching it into bundles with her trembling fingers. Billie patted her on the back, he didn't know what else to do.
Tricia jumped to see Billie's father in front of them, looking at Tricia with sadness and his son with pride.
"Tricia, this is my dad, dad, this is my girlfriend." Billie stated, making his dad smile at the word 'girlfriend'. Tricia sniffed and looked uncertainly up at Billie's dad. She was sure he knew what she was. The things her father and mother called her everynight. She waited for him to open his mouth and say:
"Get away from my son Tricia, you ugly, ungrateful, slutty, filthy, dirty pig of a girl."
"Hello Tricia. Would you like to come to our house for dinner?" Andy asked. Tricia nodded in disbelief.
"B-but my d-daddy..." Tricia stuttered, as Andy shook his head.
"I know what he does Tricia. I'll sort him out okay? I'm a daddy too, and I won't let him hurt you. Come home with me and Billie and you can have dinner with us tonight. How about that?" he replied, looking at Tricia with protective eyes. Billie held her hand once more and rubbed it reassuringly.
"Okay.." Tricia answered. She figured she had nothing to lose anyway, if they found her it couldn't really get any worse. It might get better. Andy smiled as Billie helped Tricia up and into the backseat of the car.
"I'll call your father and mother when we get home to our house." Andy said, as Billie saw Tricia's eyes fill with worry and fear.
"Tricia?" he asked, as Tricia turned to him.
"Its okay. Just forget even just for now." Billie suggested as Tricia nodded and cuddled up to him again, Billie putting his arm around her and feeling safe even just for now.
