A Series Of Unfortunate Green Days, chapter 2
Why do bad things happen to good people? is a common question asked by men, women, children and intelligent parrots. It is an impossible question to answer as many people have different views on what is good and what is bad. For example: some people in the world think that it is good to sacrifice animals to their gods or supreme leaders such as myself, whereas others would never harm another living individual. Others think that is right to burn houses down with unsuspecting families inside to obtain a large fortune, and I know many people who would consider that to be bad.
"Now I know that you are good people and it's most unfortunate for something as bad as this to happen," said Mr. Poe sternly to Billie, Mike and Tré once they were all backstage. "Why do bad things happen to good people?" he then muttered, half to himself.
Tré deliberately coughed, hinting for Mr. Poe to get to the point.
"You should use a handkerchief, you know. Mr. Armstorm has one" Mr. Poe pointed out.
"It's Armstrong" Mike corrected quickly, he had known Billie Joe Armstrong for many years, and almost knew the name better than Billie himself. "And please tell us what you need to, the show must go on" he finished, gesturing to entry of the stage and the sound of the protesting roars from the restless crowd.
"I'm not sure you will be performing much tonight after I tell you the news" said Mr. Poe sadly.
"We won't?" said Billie impatiently, prompting Mr. Poe to go on.
"No, I'm afraid not. Your houses have been burnt to the ground, all three of you. There was no sign of your families after the flames were extinguished, they are presumed dead." Said Mr. Poe rather bluntly.
A curious feeling swept over the Billie, Mike and Tré at that moment. It was the type of feeling that sits burning in ones throat. It was a mixture of confusion, anger and sadness. They were confused and angry as to why this happened, how and who was responsible. Sadness was the dominant emotion as the families that the three had loved most of their lives had been suddenly and unjustly snatched away from them forever, or so they thought.
"There is some good news," Mr. Poe piped up, after letting Green Day have their moment of silence.
"What?" whispered Billie, his voice shaky.
"We found out that the fire was the work of an arsonist. We are halfway through solving this crime already!" After Mr. Poe said that, a need for vengeance was added to the mixture of confusion, anger and sadness. They swore secretly to themselves that whoever did this would pay a terrible price.
That peculiar emotion continued to haunt Billie, Mike and Tré, during the entire car ride to the charred remains of their homes. Mr. Poe accompanied them and offered peppermints, thinking the candy would make them feel better. They refused and sighed inwardly - a phrase, which here means, "Billie, Mike and Tré thought to themselves that Mr. Poe meant well, but most people know that offering peppermints to one who has just lost their house and family didn't make one feel much better."
They stopped at Mike's house first - or what was left of it. He miserably picked through the wreckage in hopes of finding some items to remember his loved ones by. He gave up, knowing that it was hopeless and that he wouldn't find anything even if he looked during the day. He walked away slowly, knowing that memories were the only thing he had now.
Once on his property, Tré kicked at the black remains of his house and possessions, squinting around in the moonlight for something worth keeping. Like Mike, he eventually quit, knowing that attempting to find anything would be futile - a word, which means "filled with futility". He dragged his feet, which were as black as mikes hands from searching through the debris, back to the car.
They stopped at Billie's who didn't even bother to look for reminiscences, as Tré and Mikes attempts were unsuccessful. The survivors and things that survived the fire had already been found and gathered up by volunteers, but Billie, Mike and Tré didn't know that yet. He stared through the night fog and at what was once his home. If only he had left at that moment, or came to the ruins later, or even began futilely looking for possessions then he might have escaped the unfortunate fate that began with someone tugging at his trousers.
Billie was brought back to earth when felt someone tugging at his trousers. He looked down and saw a small girl with an unsettling smirk on her face. She wore all black, except for the pink writing on her shirt stating "I love the lead singer" and the loose pink laces on her fat skate shoes which were much too big for her feet. She wore a studded belt to match her studded dog collar which had a chain connected to a fake earring attached to her left ear. Her black nail polish and lipstick looked as though a monkey applied it and under a heavily mascara-ed eye, a teardrop was drawn in eyeliner. In one hand she held a pair of nun chucks and it the other she had a piece of paper and a pen that she was shoving into Billie Joe's hands.
"Carmelita!" A voice sang through the night. A woman appeared through the haze, dressed almost identical to the young girl, except her lipstick and nail polish was applied perfectly. "Oh you found them!" she exclaimed once she saw Green Day and the girl.
"Who are you?" Billie asked, confused.
"I'm terribly sorry," said the tall woman, fluttering her eyelashes at Billie. "I am Esme Squalor and this is - "
"I'm Carmelita Spats," interrupted Carmelita Spats rudely. "And I'm a hardcore-punk-skater-gothic-emo-screamo-groupie-ninja"
"She's such a big fan of... er, your music" said Esme placing her hands on Carmelita's shoulders. "She would love your autographs".
Billie took the paper and passed it to Mike and Tré after signing it himself. Tré went to hand it back to Carmelita but Esme snatched it away instead and shoved it hastily into her purse.
"Well, goodbye" Esme said to the three, taking Carmelita by the hand. But Carmelita didn't move, she didn't look too pleased at all.
"You promised you would get me a guitar pick and drum sticks!" she wailed.
"We have what we need," said Esme sharply to Carmelita, tugging her away. They continued to bicker as they walked into the haze and out of site.
Green Day felt as if the haze surrounding them represented their minds at that moment. Billie felt as if his head was filled with fog, as he was confused and angry, Mike felt as if his minds was hazy, as he had millions of questions that needed answering and Tré felt an incredible amount of sadness clouding his brain. They walked back to the car where Mr. Poe was waiting for them and through the haze that was their lives.
