Billie and Amanda, chapter 13

Seven o'clock that night

Billie walked up to Amanda's house. He rung the doorbell. No answer. Billie stood there and waited. Amanda had told him to come, so she should be here, right, he thought to himself? He rung the doorbell once more and finally he heard someone coming.

"Hold on, hold on, geez, I'm coming," said the annoyed voice. It sounded a lot like Amanda, but Amanda wouldn't be pissed that Billie was here, she invited him! The door opened slowly to reveal a small version of Amanda. Billie almost thought it was her. The two looked exactly the same. The girl was wearing ripped jeans and a Misfits t-shirt. She was listening to the Ramones, loudly on her CD player. She took her headphones off and spoke.

"Hi, you must be Billie, I'm Alex, Amanda's sister," she held her hand out stiffly. Billie could tell that Amanda and Alex were close, they wore the same kind of clothes, listened to the same music, and hell, they looked exactly the same. Amanda must have told her about Billie and Rachael and all the shit that had been going on. Billie took her hand and shook it.

"Yeah, well Amanda isn't here, so you should probably go," Alex said. Billie could tell she hated him for breaking her sisters heart. Billie opened his mouth to say something back, thought better of it closed it, and smiled.

"OK, bye then," he said, walking back to his car. Why the hell had Amanda told him to come if she wouldn't be here? He got in his car and pulled out of the driveway. He started driving home. There was no one else on the road except him. Suddenly his cell phone rang.

"Yello," Billie said.
"Pull over," a voice commanded, then hung up.

Shit, Billie thought. Who the fuck could that be? He kept driving. His phone rang again. He picked it up.

"PULL THE FUCKING CAR OVER BILLIE JOE!" someone screamed from the other line. Billie dropped his phone in shock. Fuck, he thought, now I have to pull over to get to my phone. He pulled over on the side of the road. Billie put his hand under his seat and began feeling for his phone. A car pulled up behind him. Someone got out of the car and ran towards Billie's car. Shit, shit, shit, shit, double shit, he thought. Finally his fingers curved around a metal object-his phone. He was just about to drive off when the car door flew open. An exhausted Amanda collapsed on him.

"Ahhhhh!" Billie screamed like a girl. Amanda looked up, then began laughing hysterically.
"You scared the fuck outta me," Billie said, putting a hand to his heart.
"Sorry," Amanda said, between fits of laughter.
"Next time could you tell me you're calling?" Billie asked seriously.
"I thought I was about to get killed... " he trailed off. He looked over at Amanda laughing, and he began laughing too.
"You scream like a girl," Amanda finally said, after she calmed down.
"Thanks," Billie smiled. He began tickling her.
"AHHHHH, STOP BILLIE, STOP IT, PLEASE," Amanda screamed. Billie stopped.
"You scream like a girl too," he told her, grinning.
"You dumbass, I am a girl," she told him, resting her head on his chest.
"Really, I didn't notice?" Billie said jokingly. Amanda punched him playfully on the arm. Then she took his hand.
"C'mon," she told him," I have to give you something."

They got out of Billie's car and walked to Amanda's car, parked behind his. She unlocked the backseat car door, and pulled out a guitar case, and handed it to Billie. It was an old, battered case, a case he knew well. Tears came to Billie's eyes.

"Why'd you do this... "Billie trailed off, opening the case and finding Blue inside. Memories of him and his father playing it together filled his thoughts. Why did life have to be so cruel?

"Shhh," Amanda whispered, pulling him into hug. Billie set the guitar down and hugged her back. He loved her so much. Rain drops started sprinkling. Amanda pulled away from the hug and looked straight into Billie's eyes.

"I've decided to give you another chance, that is, if you still want-" Amanda began. Billie didn't even wait for her to finish but pulled her into the most passionate kiss she had ever experienced. Once they pulled away Amanda smiled.
"I'll take that as a yes," she said happily. Billie grinned and blushed. He had been waiting months to do that. Amanda jumped into the car and turned on the radio. My Boo, from Usher and Alicia Keyes was playing. (Let's all just pretend that this song came out in the 80's) Amanda walked back to Billie and he wrapped his arms around her. She rested her head on his chest and they rocked back and forth together, slowly. It was so romantic and they both wished that this night, this moment would never end. Billie put his head on top of her head. Strawberry. He could smell her hair forever. When the song finished, Amanda pulled away.
"C'mon," Billie said pulling her into the car.
"No wait," Amanda stopped him.
"This is gonna sound stupid, but, I've always wanted to be kissed in the rain, and-" Amanda didn't even have to say anything else. Billie gave her a soft kiss. Once they pulled away, Amanda looked at him and blushed.
"Thanks," she breathed.
"Anything for a lady," Billie grinned at her. Amanda got in her car and tried to start the car, but it wouldn't start.
"C'mon, we'll take my car," Billie told her, and together they drove to his house.

*

Once they got to Billie's, Amanda called the tow company to pick up her car and she called Alex to tell her that she would be staying at Billie's and not to worry, because her parents were out of town. Once Amanda finished all her phone calls, she went to find Billie. When she finally found him, he was fast asleep on the couch. He looked so cute sleeping. Amanda lay next to him and wrapped her arms around him.

"Hey babe," he whispered. Amanda grinned. All of a sudden, Billie jumped off the couch, and ran into his room.

"HOLD ON I GOTTA SHOW YOU SOMETHING!" he called. Amanda chuckled. She loved him so much. When Billie finally came back he was holding Blue, a sheet of paper, and a small box. He set his guitar and the paper down. Then he got down on one knee and opened the box," Amanda, will you be my girlfriend?"

Amanda gasped. It was a metal pick on a chain. But it was different than the other one Billie had given her. This one was new. She took it out of the box. On the front there was a heart. Inside the heart were the letters:

B. J. + A
Forever

Amanda turned it over and saw a new inscription.

The innocent can never last,
I know we can.
-Billie

Amanda smiled.
"Of course," she told him. Billie grinned happily. He helped Amanda put the necklace on.
"You look hot," he said, then he blushed. Amanda put her hand on his cheek and kissed him. Billie grinned sheepishly and walked over to his guitar. He sat down next to Amanda.
"You were all I could think about lately, so I-I, well, just listen," he said, and began strumming Blue.

We're living in repetition.
Content in the same old shtick again.
Now the routine's turning to contention,
Like a production line going over and over and over, roller
Coaster.

Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant.
'Cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words.

Choreographed and lack of passion.
Prototypes of what we were.
Went full circle 'til I'm nauseous.
Taken for granted now.
Now I waste it, faked it, ate it, now I hate it.

Now I cannot speak, I lost my voice.
I'm speechless and redundant, 'cause I love you's not enough.
I'm lost for words, now I cannot speak.

When he finished Amanda was crying.
"Don't cry, babe," Billie said hugging her.
"I love you, Billie," was all she could choke out. Billie just stood hugging her for a while.

"So you like it?" Billie asked hopefully. Amanda nodded.
"I love it," she grinned at him. Billie smiled triumphantly. Then he reached over for the sheet of paper. Amanda took it and read:

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are

As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends

Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends

"This is really good," Amanda said in awe.
"Thanks, I-I well, it's really personal and I haven't shown anyone else," Billie said. Together they figured out a melody to the song and by midnight they were fast asleep, arms wrapped around each other, with a brand new song finished.
