All These Things I Hate, chapter 1

One Tuesday afternoon Tre and Mike were at Billie Joe's house getting wood to build a shed at Mike's house. Billie and Mike were putting wood in the back of Billie's black BMW, and Tre was putting wood in the back of his white SUV.
"Right guys my car's full," Tre told Billie and Mike.
"Alright Tre, you can head off to Mike's house now or you can wait a minute because we're nearly done." Billie replied.
"I'll go now so we can do this quicker," Tre told Billie, while getting into his car.

After Tre had driven out of Billie Joe's driveway, he stopped at the first junction down the road and looked both ways before driving out of the junction. He could see no cars coming so he drove forward then suddenly when he was halfway through the junction a gray and white beat up pick-up truck came speeding around the corner crashing right into the side of Tre's car, sending it flying.
Billie Joe's eldest son Joey was watching all of it from his bedroom window. He immediately ran down the stairs and went into the kitchen where his mum, Adrienne, was making lunch. He told Adie what had happened with tears running down his cheeks.
She ran outside and when Adie saw what had happened her eyes started filling up
with tears. She tried not to cry because she didn't want Joey to worry but he had already sunk to the ground and was crying into his knees.

Adrienne sat Joey up and raised his chin so his bloodshot eyes were meeting hers.
"Joey," Adrienne said softly, "Everything's gonna be okay."
"No it's not!!" Joey shouted "My uncle's DEAD!"
"Ssh Joey don't say that!" Adrienne shouted. Though it only made Joey cry harder.
"Joey, Hun, I'm sorry I didn't mean to shout."
He sniffed and wiped away a tear that was running down his warm, red cheek.
"Now go inside and promise me you wont tell Jakob," Adrienne said softly, standing up and pulling Joey up as she went. So Joey did what he was told and went inside slamming the front door behind him. Adrienne then ran up to Billie and squeezed him.
"Billie... ..? What if... .?" Adrienne asked.
Billie didn't reply, he just stood there his face was white and there was no emotion on it, he was like a robot. He started trembling and fell to the ground, he was having one of his anxiety attacks, they always happened when Billie needed to think.
"Oh God not now," she said, going to the ground talking to her husband, trying to bring him back round to consciousness.

Mike who was used to Billie's attacks knew that he wouldn't be able to do anything to help so got his mobile phone out and dialed 911.
"Hello 911 emergency services which service are you in need of?" Answered a young sounding lady.
"Um yeah hi. My friend's car just got crashed into and we don't know if he's alive... ... " said Mike starting to cry himself.
"Okay would you like an ambulance and the police?" the lady on the phone asked.
"Just an ambulance please," Mike said with tears running down his face.
"Right what's the address?" the lady asked.
"It's 32 Elmway Road, Oakland." Mike choked out.
"Okay I'll send one straight away." The lady said hanging up.
"Right there's an ambulance on the way." Mike said turning to Billie Joe and Adrienne.

Billie was starting to come round and what had happened just hit him. His face crumpled up and he burst out crying, his normally sparkling emerald eyes were gray and bloodshot, he'd lost his dad when he was ten and he didn't want to lose one of his best friends. Mike crouched down to Billie telling him an ambulance was on its way and everything would be just fine. The sound of sirens came echoing and Adrienne rushed inside to keep the boys occupied.

The ambulance came and asked Mike what had happened so he told them everything he had seen. Luckily the paramedics could get Tre out of the car easily so they wouldn't have to get the fire brigade in and they could get Tre to hospital quicker.
The Paramedics Martin and Gerard got Tre onto a stretcher and did an ABC check.
Martin and Gerard wheeled Tre into the back of the ambulance but before they sped of Gerard approached Billie Joe to see if he was alright. Mike explained to him about Billie's anxiety and Gerard told them that they should go to the hospital with Tre.
Mike lifted Billie Joe -who seemed to have lost the use of his legs- up off the ground and passed him up to Gerard in the ambulance.

Tre looked awful, he had a bit of glass stuck in his fore head and he had blood stains over his face. He looked like a beaten child.
Billie Joe and Mike were taken into a room to calm Billie down and get Tre's details.
"So what's your friend's full name?" a young lady asked them nicely.
"It's Frank Edwin Wright III," Mike told her calmly.
"Aha," she said writing it down, "And his date of birth?"
"9th of December 1972," Mike told her.
"Does he have any allergies?"
"No he doesn't."
"Sir, are you okay?" the lady asked Billie who had been huddled into his knees and staring at the floor the whole time. "Would you like a warm drink?"
"Yes please," Billie whispered.
"Coffee alright?" she asked and Billie nodded again.

After five minutes of Mike talking to Billie he had managed to get him speaking and reacting to everything going on around him again, when a doctor came in.
"Good afternoon Mr. Pritchard, Mr. Armstrong," the doctor said, Billie and Mike both said hi back. "Now I'm afraid I've got some bad news, your friend has a very slim chance of pulling through."
"Oh God no," exclaimed Mike.
"I'll come back through when we have more news."
"It's all over then, everything, finished with," Billie whispered.
"What's finished with? Billie what are you going on about now? Why can't you just talk sense for once in your life?" Mike cried.
Billie taking no notice of Mike having a go at him just replied, "Everything we've ever done, Green Day, our friendship, everything."
There was a knock at the door, "Come in," said Mike. It was Adrienne and the boys.
"How is he?" she asked.
"Dead," replied Billie quickly before anyone else could get a word in.
"He's not dead, he's just, not very likely to wake up," Mike explained.
Joey and Jakob starting sobbing, Joey hated it when Billie got this way; it was like he was Billie's dad. Adie went and wrapped her arms around Billie who was acting like a stubborn child.

The same doctor that had been in before came into the room with more news for the group of worried friends. "Mr. Wright is making steady progress he's still in a critical condition but he's breathing on his own now."
"Who's Mr. Wright?" asked Jakob.
"Uncle Tre," Adie told him.
"Is he awake now?" Billie asked.
"No he's in a coma, he might not awaken," the doctor explained.
"Will he be awake tomorrow?" he asked again.
"Only time will tell," the doctor said walking out the room.
"Time never tells you anything," Billie said sourly, "It takes people away from you without telling you."
No one said anything, no one knew what to say, they knew exactly what Billie meant and they didn't want to bring the subject up. To Billie hospitals were just graveyards and the only good thing that had happened to him in a hospital was when his kids were born.
"Right let's go home and we'll come back tomorrow when Tre's awake," Adrienne said kindly. Everyone got up and headed for the door except Billie Joe. "Billie, Hun you coming?"
"I'm not leaving him," he said.
"I'll stay with you," Mike said.
"Alright we'll be back in the morning," Adie said, "Don't let him be on his own in case he tries to do something stupid."
Mike nodded, Billie was unpredictable and it was always best to stay with him.

A doctor knocked at the door again and came inside the room.
"You can come and see Frank now if you'd like," he said.
"Thanks, you coming Billie?" asked Mike but Billie was already racing down the corridor and Mike sighed going after him.
When they got to the room, Tre was hooked up to every machine imaginable, they were beeping and buzzing, how someone could sit in that room for hours on end with all that going on around them Mike didn't know.
Tre looked awful his head was in bandages from where the glass had been, he had cuts and scratches all down his face and his left arm was in a cast.
A tear slid down Billie Joe's cheek, it was September, next week would be the 23rd anniversary of his dad's death and now this.

"You okay Bill?" Mike asked.
Billie nodded and when he tried to speak it just came out as a squeak.
"Come here," Mike said and put his arms around the smaller man and Billie started crying.
"Hey hey, it's alright; Ssh we don't want them taking you to the psychiatric department and putting you on anti-depressants now do we?" Mike said.
Billie sniffed and smiled, Mike always knew how to cheer him up.
"Thanks," was all he managed to get out.

Three Hours Later

Billie Joe had fallen asleep and Mike was sitting staring at Tre. He had spaced out when the machine went off and tapped his finger to it. The beat changed and Tre moved.
"Tre? You waking up? Come on buddy wake up," Mike said.
Tre groaned in pain and his eyes opened slowly.
