Green Day?... Or Adrienne?, chapter 5
Around ten o' clock that night, Billie Joe decided to call Adrienne.
In the middle of the third ring, she picked up. "Hello?" she asked.
"Hey babe," Billlie Joe grinned. The mere sound of his wife's voice was enough to brighten his rough day.
"Oh, hey!" Adrienne grinned also, registering her husband's voice. And she had to admit, she was pleasantly surprised that he had called her, and not the other way around.
"Whatcha doin'?" Billie Joe asked, sitting down on his bunk and running a hand through his wet hair. He'd just stepped out of the shower, and the only thing covering his lower half was a pair of black silk boxers that Adrienne had bought him on their tenth anniversary.
"Well, I just put the boys to bed, and now I'm melting some chocolate to dip my strawberries in," Adrienne replied, and Billie Joe could hear the beeping of the microwave buttons as Adrienne pressed them to set the proper time for the dark liquid to melt.
"Heeeeeeeey," Billie Joe pouted. "You're only s'posed to eat those when I'm feedin' 'em to ya."
Adrienne giggled. "Aww, I'm sorry. But there's no already-made food here, so it's either cook or eat strawberries."
"Laaaaaaaaazeh," Billie Joe teased, flopping back onto his bunk, and staring up at the bottom of the mattress that was Mike's bunk.
"Hell yeah," Adrienne grinned. "Jake? You wanna talk to daddy?" Billie Joe heard her ask, soon after hearing a pair of small staccato footsteps coming down the stairs.
Billie Joe guessed that Jakob had nodded, because he didn't hear a reply. All he heard was a loud, "HI DADDY!" then Adrienne scolding him lightly for being so loud.
"Hey, little man," Billie Joe chuckled, happy to hear his son's voice after so long. "You still feelin' sick?"
"Uh huh," Jakob replied, and Billie Joe heard so much of his wife in Jakob's voice that it was almost eerie.
And there it was. Back to Adrienne.
"Well, I bet your momma's takin' good care of ya," Billie Joe answered.
"She is," Jakob said excitedly. "She let me miss school today, then I got to lay down with her in your bed and eat ice cream!"
Billie Joe chuckled at his son's excitement, the picture of his wife and youngest son lying in bed together warming his heart. He could see the small boy all curled up, his head on Adrienne's chest, and Adrienne lying her small cheek upon his head, kissing it, then running a hand through it.
"I'm gonna put you on speaker phone so momma and me and Joey can all talk to you, okay?" Jakob asked.
"Alright," Billie Joe agreed.
Hey, you couldn't beat talking to your whole family all at once.
Jakob pressed the small black button on the phone that showed a speaker, then set it on the counter.
"Hey Joe Joe," Billie Joe grinned, hearing Joey talking to Adrienne about something girl-related.
"Dad!" Joey exclaimed.
"What's happenin'? You takin' care of your mom and brother for me?" Billie Joe asked, being as he always referred to Joey as "the man of the house" when he was away.
"Uh huh," Joey replied. "What's up over there?"
"Not much, dude. Just hangin' out on my bunk, talking to you guys," Billie Joe answered, smirking at how much he and his eldest son sounded alike.
Complete opposite of Jakob and Adrienne.
"Well, mom's tellin' us to go to bed," Joey said sadly. "I love you," he said, then Jakob repeated his phrase.
"I love you guys too. I'll call ya tomorrow," Billie Joe said, then heard some rustling as Joey and Jakob headed back up stairs.
"Adie?" Billie Joe asked, making sure his wife hadn't gone too.
"Mmhmm," Adrienne hummed thickly, through a mouthful of strawberry and chocolate.
"Just makin' sure you were still here," Billie Joe answered, closing his eyes.
"I am. Just eatin'," Adrienne responded.
"Well, I guess I'll letcha go then," Billie Joe said regretfully.
"Alright, babe. Talk to ya tomorrow," Adrienne said, her tone matching Billie Joe's.
"Love ya," Billie Joe said, and made a kissing sound.
"Love you too," Adrienne laughed, making the same sound Billie Joe had.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad after all.
Maybe he wouldn't have to pick.
But then again, all good things must end.
The last sentence sounding in his head, Billie Joe hung up, and buried his face in his pillow.
Why must all good things end?
In the middle of the third ring, she picked up. "Hello?" she asked.
