The Meaning Of Love, chapter 2

Billie Joe got up again around seven (in the afternoon). The house was very quiet, and Adrienne was not in the room.

'I'll go talk to her. Sort this out, I guess.' Billie Joe thought.

He got up but saw that he had stained the bed covers with eyeliner—he had been crying.

He snatched it all up, carried it outside and dumped it into the washing machine and started washing it. Then he left it there.

He went out of the laundry room and looked everywhere for her; even inside cabinets and the freezer.

A few hours later, after closing an abandoned lunch box up in the attic in the hopes of finding his wife crammed in there, he got hungry and went downstairs for some food.

Apparently, Joey and Jakob weren't home either.

Feeling forlorn, Billie Joe headed to the kitchen.

There was a bright pink sticky-note stuck on the white fridge door. It read:

"Dear Billie Joe. I know I didn't tell you this, but I had to go someplace. I'll tell you when I come back.

Loving you with all her heart,
Your wife, Adrienne Armstrong
P.S.: I took Joey and Jakob with me.
"

Billie Joe squinted at the note, checking it to see if it really was Adrienne's beautiful writing.

It passed the test.

Smiling, Billie Joe kissed it and went off to eat something.

In his kitchen (where he already was) he served himself some Chinese food, waffles with a lot of honey, tea with a lot of sugar, half a gallon of coke, half a gallon of beer, two bowls of ice cream, hot chicken soup (with sugar and lemon added) and then he went to the coach, turned on the TV, and finished off his dinner with nearly half a gallon of beer mixed with quite a lot of alcohol and, half an hour after that, a joint.

Drunk and tired, he went upstairs to his room to try and take a nap, but just as he lay down on his bed and softly closed his eyes, an annoying ring announced that the bed covers were finished being washed (actually, dried).

With a groan, he got up and dragged himself over to the washing/drying machine. He lay down on the warm sheets again and they slowly started to get wrinkled under his weight. The sticky note was stuck under his ear as he swiftly fell into a drunken sleep.

Midnight came and went, and there was no sign of Adrienne.

But someone apart from Billie Joe was in the house.

She softly walked up and down the corridors of Billie's home, wishing with all her might that she could be Adrienne.
