Kiss The Demons Out Of My Dreams, chapter 1
‘I missed you, you know’, Tre said shyly as he and Steph walked along the side of the old railway tracks in the neighbourhood they both came from. They hadn’t done this since they we’re younger, and now both being 16 they didn’t really want to be re-living their childhood. Tre stepped between each plank of timber that connected the iron railings together, while Steph tried to balance herself on them. The sunset was going down infront of them so they quickened the pace to get home in time before it was dark. Steph looked up into the pink sky before she spoke to him.
‘I missed you too’, she told him, using him as a support as they continued walking forward. Tre took her hand and guided her just like they used to when they were about 8 or 9 years old. It seemed like so long ago though since they had done this. So long ago since they had talked to one another. So long ago since they had once dated. Time seemed to be travelling by fast, and for them it was something that caught up with them at such a young age.
‘You and Billie still going out?’, he asked her, letting go of her hand slightly.
‘Yeah. Its been like 6 months now’, she told him, focusing on keeping her balance.
‘Seems like a while since I’ve stepped foot into this place’, he told her, watching her from the corner of his eyes, making sure she didn’t fall.
‘Only 6 months Tre’, she reminded him smiling, ‘Its been 6 long months since you left with my sister to go down to the bay. How is she anyways?’, Steph asked, curious to see how her elder sister Ashlinn was.
‘Ahh, yeah she’s fine’, Tre told her, ‘We couldn’t be happier together’, he finished deciding to keep his mouth shut for the rest of the walk. It was a miracle that Steph was even speaking to him, after she had discovered he was going behind her back with her sister, and the connection they had right now was one that Tre wanted to keep.
‘That’s sweet’, she told him, jumping down off the rail as she started walking next to him. Still though she kept her hand firmly around his, just incase she wanted to step up again.
‘So you still go to Pinole High?’, he asked her curious about what had changed over the last 6 months of him not being at the place he called home.
‘Yep, and so do Mike and Billie’, she informed him, as she stepped carefully over the rocks and gravel between the rails. Tre watched her steps carefully, before he took his eyes off her, pretending that he wasn’t looking at her.
‘You coming back?’, she asked him timidly letting his fingers slip down around hers. Tre tightened his grip.
‘Ahh yeah, I start back up on Monday’, he told her, as they made there way onto the main streets.
The two continued to walk a little more in silence before they found themselves at Steph place.
‘Come on, I wanna see my sister’, she told him, leading him towards the house.
‘Maybe I should go home’, he told her, letting go of her hand as he stepped back. He didn’t want to be interference, as he was the reason Steph and her sister weren’t talking before they left for the bay.
‘No I want you to come inside’, she told him, grabbing his arm before she pulled him inside.
-Inside the house-
‘OMG STEPH’, Ash screamed, running up to her little sister. She put her arms around her and hugged her tightly as if she had never seen her in years.
‘Ash your home’, Steph whispered, putting her arms around her sister as well. She missed the attention and consideration her sister always gave her. Of course she always had her older brother Mike for that, but since he and his long time girlfriend Irene were together more often now, it was nice to know things would be back to normal.
‘I’m so glad to be home’, she squealed, looking down at her sister. They smiled at eachother before they broke apart, and Steph noticed Billie-Joe sitting with Mike on the couch. Steph looked back up at Ash.
‘You going to bed, you seem kinda jet-lagged’, she asked, looking at her sister. Ash took up Tre’s hand and pulled him next to her.
‘Yeah, I am a little. We might, you know go and doze off for a while,’ she said, turning to walk up to her bedroom, ‘I’ve got to tell you all about the bay when I wake up’, she finished smiling as she walked Tre up to her room and closed the door behind them. Steph went and sat with Mike and Billie-Joe on the couch.
‘You glad she’s back?’, Mike asked, looking over at his younger sister as she sat leaned over onto Billie.
‘Yeah, its nice’, Steph said, smiling, ‘Where’s Irene?’, she asked questioningly noticing Mike wasn’t with her as they usually were.
‘She’s out with some study group’, Mike informed her, ‘So looks like I’m stuck here with you and Billie’.
‘Sweet’, she said, turning round to face Billie, ‘And how are you?’, she asked him, playing with his shirt buttons. He smiled and let her continue as he answered her.
‘I’m fine gorgeous, I’m fine’, he told her as she rested herself down on him a little more.
‘You and Tre were sure gone for a while’, Mike pointed out. Billie and Steph both looked up at him.
‘Yeah, we were just like you know….talking and stuff’, she said quietly, continuing to play with Billie’s buttons. He twirled her hair around his fingers gently as the three continued talking about their day.
‘You staying here tonight?’, Steph asked Billie. He looked down at her and shook his head.
‘Mum wants me home tonight. Something about her and Brad or something, I don’t know’, he finished saying as he finished playing with her hair as well.
‘Oh come on Billie. You live next door to me. If anything happens you’ll be like a few footsteps away’, she told him, trying to convince him to stay with her for the night. Billie dropped his head and shook it.
‘No I promised her I would be there for her. I’m sorry sweetie. I can be here with you all day tomorrow’, he told her, kissing her on her cheek. She blushed for a few seconds. That was the first time he had been affectionate with her infront of Mike. Usually they kept to themselves, as they knew Mike wasn’t overly impressed with both of this sister dating his best friends.
‘Okay then. I’ll speak to you from my window then?’, she asked, as she got up from where she sat. Billie nodded as he got up, helping Steph up as well.
‘Of course, I don’t ever want there to be a day, that I never say goodnight to you like that’; he told her, giving her a hug, before he had to leave. Steph held him tightly and close to her forgetting for the moment that Mike was there watching them. She pushed his fringe back and looked into his eyes, before they let go of eachother and Steph walked him to the front door, saying goodbye for the last time that night. She closed the door behind him as he left and put her back to it, sliding down to the ground.
‘You really like him, don’t you?’, Mike asked her curiously rasing one eyebrow. Steph looked over at him all pink and flustered. She smiled and nodded her head.
‘I don’t just like him Mike. I’m in love with him’, she told her older brother as she got up from the door and made her way to the stairs.
‘I’ll be off. I’ll see you in the morning’, she told him, making her way up the stairs.
‘Yeah night sis’, Mike replied back to her, before he switched the channel on the TV and sat there alone in the dark watching the late night comedy channels.
-Steph’s bedroom-
She took of her watch and put it on her bedside table before she hopped into bed. Billie wasn’t at his window at their usual time to talk, so she came to the conclusion that he was still with his mum and Brad.
She slid herself under the covers and leaned over the shut the window, but still left it open a little so that if Billie did eventually talk to her, she would be able to hear him. She flicked off the oil lamp she had on her bedside table and shut her eyes trying to fall asleep.
‘Steph can I come in?’, she heard from the door as it opened letting light filter in…
