Is Home Really Where The Heart Is?, chapter 1

Another day of school, what fun. I hate going to school everyone judges me just because I'm smart and I don't like to talk. The only reason I don't like to talk is because I don't like being the center of attention, even if it is just for a split second. Not to mention the kids at my school ask the stupidest questions which I don't feel like answering. Example: "If you were homeless, but you had a box, and you maxed out a credit card, could the bank take your box away?" Get my point? I thought so. I sat next to my locker waiting for the bell to ring. When it finally did, I got up grabbed my books and went to homeroom. Mr. Flickinger just walked in and told us to quiet down, like that's gonna happen.

"Now class I've told you before, once that bell rings I expect you to remain quiet until the announcements are over. After that you may talk quietly to one another."
Do see remotely what I'm talking about? Oh no. Not the morning report song. Please no!

"This is the morning report! Gives you the morning report! Every pounce, roar and snort. Not a tale I distort, on the morning report. This is the morning report! Gives you the morning report! Every pounce, roar, and snort. Not a tale I distort, on the mor-ning report!" God that's terrible having to listen to that every day! Now we have to do the pledge and our moment of silence then sit back down to wait for the announcements.

"Good morning Wyoming Area. SAT tutoring classes will be held after school today at 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm. Driver's ED Theory classes will be canceled today. Please note the following changes to the PSSA testing days. Wednesday- sessions one and two test, Thursday- sessions one and two test, Friday- make up testing. Any one in Mrs. Rogan's 5th period study hall, please report to the right alcove of the auditorium 5th period. Sport's Report. Lady Warriors lost their game against Meyer's 22-23. Warriors football won against Pittston Area on Friday with a final score of 28-23. Thank you, and have a nice day." No thank you, you just gave me at least five minutes to work on my science report that's due today. He he he.

The bell rings and now I have to go to reading. Uh. Don't get me wrong, I actually like reading, it's just that, who needs to read at 8:00 in the morning?! We had to read this stupid story about a kid named Ben Buck and his friend Joe Mountain both growing up in 'coal country'. Yet another thing I hate: reading about where I live. I mean we grew up here and the teachers still don't think we know what went on. Let's see, Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton, Pennsylvania. There was coal here. They dug mines and mined out all of the coal. Disasters happened, they closed down the mines and used them as national landmarks. So interesting to read about! Not.

Anywho, now I have to go to American Government with Mr. Fetch. People claim he has a glass eye, but I don't think so because it actually moves. We copied notes there and now I'm in cooking. Unfortunately, today we don't get to cook. Kind of ironic huh? Cooking class where you can't cook! [i]I have math next then science so I finally finished my report to hand in. In Writing and Communications, we wrote. The name of the course is kind of self explanatory.
The bell rang again and I went to lunch. I got in whatever line was shortest, which happened to be a chicken patty (no, I'm not a vegetarian).

I got my lunch and went to sit down by myself. It's not that I don't have any friends, because I do, it's just the fact that I don't like talking, so people don't enjoy me taking up a seat where one of their closer friends might be able to sit. Once I finished my lunch, I went to my locker grabbed my books for English, and walked to Miss Lombargo's classroom. Sean was already sitting there. "Hola!" he yelled to me as I walked in.

"Ummm...hola?" I said. He's not Mexican...just strange that's all, but he's still cool.

"No able English."

"That was in Spanish." [i] Ha! I fooled him! Bwa ha ha ha ha!

"Hola!" he said again after pausing to think about my comment.

He was in my homeroom and math class. Once the class started Miss Lombargo told us that she was switching our seats. I dread when teachers move our seats because I hate the front of the rooms, it's like a phobia of mine. I mean, you can't do any other work when the teacher is right there in front of you.

The bell rang again and now I have to find Kelly so we can go to gifted together. Yes you saw it right. I'm in my school's gifted program. The gifted teacher is Mr. Burns, he's also the school's Tech-Ed teacher. I don't know how he got to be a teacher of any subject because he's a complete idiot. I would quit, but next year we get to take advanced guitar, so I'm sticking it out. I want to play guitar so badly. I play drums now so I think it'd be cool to play guitar. Wow I get off topic easily. Sometimes I think I have ADD like my science teacher, Mrs. Townsend. Now what was I talking about again? Oh yeah, gifted. In gifted we have to do stupid puzzles and stuff, so I'll just skip right to the bus ride home. Yes I can fast-forward in time, 'cause I'm cool like that.

On the bus everyone was kind of quiet. It sucks. All I hear for a half an hour is the "blah, blah, blah" of the radio. I live in the 'boonies', well actually the sign says 'Village of Harding', but that's why it takes me so long to get home.
When I got home no one was there. What a surprise. See my mom's a professional chef and even though it sounds great, it's not. Since she's a chef she works from 2 in the afternoon until about 10 or 11 at night. So I'm stuck home alone all the time, even on weekends. What about my dad you say? Well, he's a professional truck driver, so he's gone for two weeks at a time. And when he is home and I can finally have a ride somewhere, he wants to spend time with me. So like I said before, I'm home alone, just like almost every other night of my life.

Since I have nothing to do and no real friends to call, I go to my room to listen to music. I like punk music (another reason as to why I don't have many friends) and living where I live, punk isn't the easiest genre of music to find. So I got settled on my bed, put in some mixed CD that I had laying around, and started to read. Yes read. I enjoy reading like I said earlier. I was reading 'Fat Kid Rules the World', it's really good. I got bored and eventually I started to drift off to sleep. Hold on, I want to do a recap of my day. Let's see: School, home, sleep. Sounds so exciting huh!?[i] Well when I woke up my mom was home. I rolled over and saw that it was only 9:30. [i]Hmm...she's home early.[i]

"Carlie, can you come down here please? I'd like to talk to you," she yelled up to me. [i]Great. What did I do now?
(Oh and if I never mentioned my name before, it's Carlie Hope).

"Whatever, I'm coming." I rolled out of bed and worked my way downstairs. Once I was there I strolled over to the living room and plopped down on our old tattered couch. My mom came in and sat across from me in an old blue chair. She still had here worn out t-shirt that she wore to work on and her brown hair was in a messed up ponytail.

"Carlie," she said taking a deep breath. "I've been offered a job at Huntsville Golf Club, and I think I'm going to accepting it."

"And this should interest me why?" Why she was being so serious. I mean it's not like she hasn't switched jobs before.

"It should interest you because, the Huntsville Golf Club is in Berkeley, California, and we're going to be moving."

Ya, that would interest me.
