An Angel's Voice, chapter 16
Sara fell asleep shortly after practice and woke up the next morning to a pair of bright green eyes. She screamed and shot up from bed. The person sitting on top of her toppled to the floor. It was none other than little Jakob Armstrong.
"Well, it's nice to meet you, too!" He said sarcastically, hoisting himself off the floor.
"Sorry." She breathed. "I didn't know you were here. Where's your dad?"
"In the kitchen." He said, pointing down the hall.
"Alrighty then. Let's go." They made their way over to the kitchen and found Billie, Mike, Tre, Adie, both Jasons and Ronnie crowded in the kitchen.
"Dad, you said that if I sit on top of this lady, she won't wake up. Well, here she is." Sara eyed Billie.
"YOU told him to sit on top of me?" Billie smiled sweetly.
"Maybe. Why do you want to know?"
"Well, maybe because I almost had a fuc- I mean- freakin' heart attack!"
"Well, I sat on you once. That was the morning when you found toothpaste in your hair." Her eyes widened.
"That was YOU!?"
"The one and only." She sighed.
"Whatever. I'm going back to bed."
"Wait. You hafta meet everyone." Tre said. She looked around the kitchen.
"Hi everyone. I'm Sara, and you're everyone. There, now we know each other. Goodnight." She walked back into the bedroom. Tre followed.
"Well, that was rather rude, don't you think?" She flopped down on the bed.
"Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm too tired, though. And that little kid Jakob scared the shit out of me! Besides, the kitchen's a little crowded." She threw the covers over herself and closed her eyes. Tre flopped down with her and stared at the ceiling.
"Yeah, but I want you in the kitchen to meet everyone." She opened a tired eye and sighed.
"Fine. Make me get out of bed when I'm SO comfortable." He laughed and grabbed her waist and hoisted her up on his shoulder. "And that doesn't help either. WATCH OUT FOR THE DOOR-" The back of her head hit the top of the door frame. Tre put her down in the kitchen, still laughing.
"Holy cow. I think you dented the door frame!" Everyone laughed. She looked at everyone.
"Yeah, haha funny." She said sarcastically, rubbing the back of her head.
"Well, I guess Billie was right. You're not a morning person, are you?" Adrienne said, smiling.
"No. And with all of these guys here, my patience becomes scarce. So does TOOTHPASTE!" She said, looking at Billie. He smiled.
"That was funny, though. I'm glad we got that on tape."
"Augh, you're so mean."
"I know. But you still love me!" He said, laying her across his lap and kissing the top of her head.
"Yeah, I guess I do. Where's Jakob?"
"Running around outside with Joey. Mike should be out there, too."
"Well, I've met Jakob, but I haven't met Joey. And we haven't had a proper introduction." She said, turning to Adie and holding out her hand. Adie gladly took it. Then Sara's cell wrung in the bedroom.
"You better go and get that." Billie said, tightening his grip around her.
"Well, I would but now you're just fucking around with me. So if you would, let me go please."
"No, I don't think so."
"I'LL GO GET IT!" Tre shouted, running to the bedroom. Sara looked at Billie.
"I hope you're happy. Do you remember the last time I let him answer my phone?"
"What happened?" Adie asked. Tre answered for her.
"Hello, this is the Hooters restaurant where we have sexy girls with big-"
"GIVE ME THAT!" She snatched the phone from him, eyeing him. "H'lo? Hi, Mr. Anderson. Yeah, just a second." She took the phone away from her ear and looked at Billie. "You really have to let me go now. I have to take this call."
"Why?" Billie asked. "Who's Mr. Anderson?" She sighed and rubbed her eyes.
"He's someone from the adoption agency I used to stay at. Now can you let me go please?" He loosened his grip and she got up and walked into the bedroom.
"We have another family that wants to adopt you." Mr. Anderson said on the other line. Billie snuck into the room, out of sight. He listened intently to her conversation.
"I don't need another family. Augh, how many times must I tell you?"
"Yes, I know. But there are so many people here who have their eye on you. At least come down and meet some of them." She sighed.
"Listen, Mr. Anderson. I'm happy right here. I don't want a new family. So tell all of those people I'm not available." She hung up and threw her cell phone on the bed. It wrung again, but she just ignored it. Billie emerged from his hiding place.
"You already have a family. Why is he trying to find you a new one?" She whirled around and eyed him. Then, she looked down at her feet.
"They're not my real family. They just let me stay there so I don't have to stay at that awful orphanage. So technically, no. I don't have a real family. But that's our little secret, ok?" Billie nodded, looking side tracked. "Ok, Billie?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll take it to the grave." He walked out of the room and back to the kitchen. He sat down next to his wife. "Adie, I have an idea."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, too!" He said sarcastically, hoisting himself off the floor.
