An Angel's Voice, chapter 5
The next day, the guys headed over to Sara's house in Hastings. Although Sara didn't know they were coming.
"Jack, leave me alone. It's not my birthday yet so I don't have to get up yet." Her step-brother Jack sat at the foot of her bed and tried to shake her awake. "Come ON! Get up!" He shook harder. "Jack no- ARNIE!!" Her step-dad then came into the room. " Sorry, darling, but I'm with Jack on this one. We're leaving pretty soon so get up and say good bye to everyone." "Augh, fine." She got up and got dressed, not prepared for her surprise.
"Tre, come on! Hurry up! We don't have all day." Billie tried to pull Tre out of the car, but he was putting on his make up. "Tre, we're going up to the door without you if you don't hurry up! Now COME ON!" Tre finally got out of the car and ran up to the door. He rang the doorbell. Jack answered. "Woah, Green Day, right? Yeah, Sara loves you guys." "Is she home? We were kind of hoping to surprise her for her birthday." Tre said, looking over Jack's shoulder to look for Sara. "Yeah, she's here. She's up in her room packing. Come on in." "Thanks. Packing? For what?" Tre asked. "Oh, it's a long story. Her room is right up the stairs, take a left." "Ok, thanks. Hey, Kevin, Peter." Tre said, eyeing Kevin sitting on the couch with Peter. Billie and Mike followed him up to Sara's room. They heard very loud music.
"HAVE A NICE DAY!" Sara and her sister (biological sister) Rachel were belting out "Have A Nice Day" by Bon Jovi. Tre and the guys burst through the door. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SARA!!!" Sara turned around. "Oh my god! Hi guys!" She squealed running and kissing them all on the cheek. "You caught her just in time, guys, she was just about to leave." Rachel said. "I should probably let you guys talk." She quietly left the four of them alone. "So, birthday girl, why all the packing?" Sara turned away. "That's not important. Let's go downstairs and get something to drink." Her voice was shaky. "Hey, hey woah, what's wrong, babe?" Tre asked softly. "It's a long, boring story." Tears formed in her eyes. "Well, it obviously isn't that boring. Tell us, maybe we can help." Tre gently lifted her to the bed and held her in his arms.
"Last April my parents left for Boston. They got there, spent a week or so there and they never called while they were there. Well the day they were supposed to come home, they called and said they weren't coming back. And we suspected that we were going to move to Boston to live with them but they had a different plan." She wiped the tears from her eyes. "So, they left you here while they lived in Boston?" Billie asked. "Yeah, and for some reason they put me, my sister Rachel and my little brother Joe up for adoption." "Oh, my god. That's terrible." Mike said. "Yeah, well my siblings and I couldn't bear being separated so now we live with our god parents. I live with Jack, Arnie and Jackie in St. Paul. Rachel lives with Auntie Michelle and Uncle Bob in Wyoming, MN. And Joe lives with Erik, my other uncle, in Wisconsin." "So the lady at the Xcel that day, that wasn't your real mom? That was your god mother? And this isn't your house?" Billie asked, confused. "Yeah, well I call her my step-mom. And Kevin and Peter are Rachel's step-brothers. And we all got together this past week to see each other. But I'm going back to St. Paul today. And my parents, my real parents, are selling this house."
"Sara, are you ready to go?!" Jack shouted from downstairs. "Almost. Well, I have to leave for now." "But we just got here." Tre protested. "I know, I'm so sorry you went through all of this trouble for nothing." "For nothing? We got to see you, didn't we?" Mike said softly with a wink. "You guys are great. Thank you so much." She hugged them all and they carried her bags downstairs.
"Kevin, will you back up the truck so Jack and I can load up the 4-wheeler's?" Sara grabbed the keys to the wheeler and looked at the guys with a mischevious smile. "Anyone up for a little ride?" They all ran outside to Jack on his red Honda. He was showing off doing donuts. "SHOW OFF!" Sara shouted. She grabbed her helmet and jumped on her Arctic Cat. She turned the key and followed Jack to the back of the house. "Oh, dear, where did those two get off to?" The guys turned around and found Arnie. "Oh, hi they just went behind the house." "Aww, shit. Now we'll never get home. Anyone here ever ride?" They shook there heads. "No? Ok then, I'll do it myself." "Do what?" Tre asked. "Well, someone has to break them up before someone gets hurt. Here comes Sara." They turned and saw her Green Arctic Cat racing towords them. She came to a screeching hault besides the guys. "Sara, come on, we have to go." She grabbed Tre and threw him behind her. "You'll have to catch me, first." And she sped away with Tre.
"Which way did she go?" Jack asked. Billie and Mike pointed behind the horse fence to the dirt trail leading to some dirt jumps. And sure enough, Jack saw Sara and Tre speeding up the trail. "Hold on, pop," Jack said, turning to Arnie. "I'll catch her."
