There and Back Again, chapter 3
I walked up to the field and seen Megan and Mike standing near the bleachers and began to walk over to them. Mike was talking to the boy that I had thought was Billie.
"What time should we be there?" Mike said.
"Come around five." the boy replied.
Megan turned to me and began to explain.
"They are in a band. They are playing at Gilman on Saturday." Mike turned to Megan and said that they were going to get something to eat before the game started.
"Do you want anything?" he said asked both of us.
"No." we said in unison. Mike and him walked away. I began to stare, without even realizing it, still trying to confirm if that was Billie Joe or not.
"Man... I can't believe it!"
"What?" I replied as a snapped back into the conversation.
"How long have you been away? I can not BELIEVE you actually forgot.."
"Just say it... ."
"Do you even know who that IS?" she said as she pointed into the crowd.
"I knew it was him.." I said to myself happily.
"I thought so. He doesn't know who you are though. I mean, you have changed completely." I saw Mike running up to us.
"Does anyone have money with them?"
"What? No... ."
"Here" I said as I gave him a dollar.
"Thanks" After that conversation took place, he just ran off again.
"Wow that was.... Random... " I said.
"Yep. Well anyway, I will just simply introduce you to Billie Joe.
"Okay. Now, should we find a place to sit or...?" I said after noticing we were still standing.
We took a seat a yard away, on the first step of the bleachers. We sat there waiting for them to come back for a about twenty minutes. Megan spotted them coming back. They had only gotten two pieces of pizza, one each.
"What the fuck? It took you that long to get two pieces of pizza?
"Yup." Mike replied.
Mike and Billie Joe took a seat next to Megan. I began to wonder when Megan was going to introduce me. Everyone just sat and talked for a couple minutes until Billie leaned forward and started to talk to me.
"Oh. Sorry, um." he said chewing his food. "I'm Billie Joe." I hope he remembers me... .
"I'm Ash." he looked pretty shocked when I said this.
"Hell, its about time you said your damn name!" Megan said.
"ASH? You look totally different! When did you move back? I didn't even know it was you!
"So... " Mike said as he noticed this (yeah, you could really tell he analyzed the situation). "You two DO know each other! I Thought so.."
"Yeah, I TOLD you so." Megan said. At this point I decided to speak again.
"I moved back about a week ago."
I don't think anyone really paid any attention to the game. We just sat there and talked the whole time. Finally the game was over, and we all got up to leave. First, we walked Megan home, and then we started going to Billie's house.
"So... How long have you guys actually known each other?" Mike asked.
"Basically our whole lives. We were neighbours." Billie Joe answered. We just continued the conversation until we got to the house.
"Bye!" Mike said as he walked into the house.
"Mike lives with you?" I said, somewhat surprised.
"Yup." Silence. Damn it... I hate awkward silence.
"Um.. This weekend, do you want to go to the movies?" he asked me.
"I'd love to." I said modestly. I am really lame in awkward situations, obviously.
"Cool. I'll see you tomorrow in school!" He said as he walked into the house.
"Tell your mom I said hi." I said as we went our separate ways. Well, today could not have gone much better.
