J.O.S, chapter 4
Tunny laughed. "Saint Jimmy, huh? Well it's a new nick name. So, Saint Jimmy how's life on the run?" he asked. Jimmy smiled to himself as the drug took him over.
"Pretty sweet. No more authority. No more Mary... "
"Oh that's right. Mary... she was a bitch," Tunny said, cutting him off. Jimmy nodded and laughed.
"Yeah... yeah she was. So, I left," Jimmy finished, feeling happy again. Tunny raised an eye brow at his buddy.
"Don't you mean, 'we left'?" Tunny corrected. Jimmy looked over at him, not understanding.
"We? What do you mean?" Jimmy asked. Did he come here with someone? All he remembered was bringing himself. Ha! Maybe he was his only friend.
"Your sister, dumb shit," Tunny laughed. Jimmy blinked.
"I have a sister?" he asked. Tunny blinked at him.
"Ok! One joint is YOUR limit," Tunny said as he sat up. Jimmy blinked at him as Tunny forced him to stand up.
"Come on. Follow me druggie," he mumbled as he walked with him down the hall. Tunny opened the door at the end of the hallway and shoved Jimmy inside. Jimmy looked around. He saw a drum set, an empty cot and another bed with someone sleeping there.
"Dude... who's that?" he asked. Tunny stared at him blanky.
"Are you kidding me? Dude that's your sister! That's Emily! What's wrong with you? I'm never giving you a joint again, man!" Tunny said in a whisper. Jimmy walked over to the side of the bed and knelt down next to the sleeping figure.
Emily?...
Everything came back to him. Him sitting on the edge of the bed. He watched her cry. She had found him stoned. She was younger then. Their mom. He had run away with her. From everything. But, they'd faced it all before and they could do it again. She had looked up to him since she was a baby. Crap, flash back.
***
"Where'd my mommy and daddy go?" the 4 year old Jimmy asked his baby sitter. She picked him up and sat him on her lap.
"They're at the hospital, honey," she said excitedly. Jimmy's eyes welled up with tear as his bottom lip started to quiver.
"THEY DIIEDD!!" he sobbed. The babysitter stared wide eyed at him as he continued to wail.
"No! No, Jimmy. That's not why they're there! Oh holy crap, Jimmy!" she cried. Jimmy sniffled to a stop and looked up at the teenager.
"It's n-not why they're there?" he sniffed. She shook her head.
"No, your mommy's bringing home your little sister," she said with a laugh. Jimmy scrunched up his nose.
"Ew," he said simply. The girl laughed.
"Now, now. It'll be fun having a little sister. You'll have someone new to play with," she explained. Jimmy stuck out his tongue.
"But it's a girl... I wanted a brother. But mom doesn't want me to be happy," he huffed as he crossed his arms over his chest. The teenager laughed as Jimmy looked up at her.
"Well I'm a girl. Do you not like me?" she asked. He shook his head.
"No, I like you. But you're nice. Sisters are always meanies," he mumbled. The teen shook her head as the front door opened.
"There she is," she whispered to the 4 year old. He sat back against the couch with his arms crossed over his chest.
Jimmy's mom and dad walked through the door.
"Thanks for watching him, Charity. Brad and I really appreciate it," Jenna (Jimmy's mom's real name) whispered. She nodded and looked down at the baby in her hands.
"Oh she's precious. Well, if you need me again, I'll be down the street," Charity said and with that, she left the house.
Brad walked over to the couch and knelt down in front of his son.
"Do you want to say hi to Emily?" he asked with a smile on his face. Jimmy blinked at him.
"Who's Emily?" he asked. His father smiled.
"Your new sister," he responded. Jenna walked over to the couch and sat next to her 4 year old son. He looked up at his mom who smiled down at him. He looked down at the spot of couch between his legs as he swung his tiny feet over the edge.
"Well... kinda... " he mumbled. Jenna tilted the baby towards him. Jimmy sat on his knees and looked over his mother's arm at the tiny baby girl. He smiled.
"Hi Emily."
**
"My God... how did I forget her? What the hell just happened?" Jesus whispered. Tunny shrugged.
"You had a strange brain fart, buddy," he laughed quietly. Jesus nodded and rubbed his head. He stood up and headed out of the room with Tunny. He looked down at his hand. He was holding a joint. Jesus furrowed his brow in confusion.
"... Did you give me this?" he asked. Tunny looked back at him and looked at the joint in his hand.
"Yeah... why?" he asked slowly. Jesus shrugged.
"I just don't remember getting it... " he said softly.
"Oh God here we go again. Did you get a brick thrown at your head or something after I left? You're acting weird, Jimmy," Tunny said. Jesus stopped and looked up at him.
"I thought you called me Jesus," he said. Tunny blinked.
"Go to bed," he said simply as he shoved Jesus back down the hallway. He snatched the joint out of his hand and stuck it in his own mouth. "And I'm cutting you off. No more junk tonight. We'll start fresh tomorrow. Nighty night crazy," he laughed.
Jesus yawned and laid back down on his cot. He looked over at Emily's sleeping figure.
"Night sis," he whispered. Jesus closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.
The next morning, Jesus woke up to the sound of chirping birds and sunshine... he wished.
"St. Jimmy? Yoo hoo...Ja Ja Ja Jimmy! *sigh* HEY POT HEAD! GET OFF YOUR ASS AND WAKE UP! Jesus Christ," was what he really woke up to.
Jesus' eye flashed open. He was greeted with the peeling paint of the ceiling. He sat up groggily in bed and rubbed his eyes. He looked to the door and saw Tunny standing there with Emily by his side.
"What time is it?" Jesus mumbled.
"7:20. I need to be at school in 40 minutes. And my backpack's at home," Emily said quickly. Jesus blinked at his sister.
"We have to go back to that place?" he whispered. Emily nodded.
"I'm sorry... I... I forgot it and it's got all my books in it. I need it," she said as she gnawed on her bottom lip. The 17 year old groaned and ran his hand through his disheveled hair. He slowly stood up. He dug in his pockets for the keys to his car and pulled them out. He went through each key until he found the one he was looking for. The key to their old house. Jesus looked back at Emily and began to walk through the door.
"That's great. If you need me, I'll be sleeping some more. I offered to take her when I heard her trying to wake you up but she said you'd do it. So, instead of taking her, I helped her wake you up. SO! I sleep now. Good night... I mean... good morning, y'all!" Tunny said as he walked back to his room and slammed the door.
Jesus walked with his sister down the hallway until they reached the stairs.
"I'm sorry Jim-I mean... Jesus... " Emily said. Jesus waved it off and yawned. He was rubbing his eyes when he collided with someone on the landing.
"Shit, I'm sorry," he mumbled as he back away.
"No problem Jesus," he heard. He opened his eyes and looked over at who he had run into.
Whatsername.
"Hey," he said, waking up suddenly. She smiled.
"Hey yourself." Jesus smiled and looked her over. He frowned.
"Are you just getting in?" he asked. Whatsername looked down at her skirt and tank top and blushed.
"Yeah... I had... a date to go to... " she said. Jesus' stomach dropped. So, she was dating someone. So what? He didn't have a chance with her anyway... well... truth be told... he did... but he'd just met her. Not like they were going to hit it off as soon as they laid eyes on each other.
"Oh... ok then... Well I gotta take this one to school," he said, gesturing to Emily. "See you in a bit." Whatsername back pedaled up the stairs as she waved at them. Jesus turned back around and walked out into the parking lot. He looked over at Emily who was giving him a cheeky smile.
"What?" Jesus asked as they approached the car.
"You like her," she said. Jesus rolled his eyes.
"Please don't be playing match maker on me or you will be beaten into the ground," he mumbled. Emily held her hands up in surrender.
"Alright, alright... I'm just saying... "
Jesus smiled and ruffled her hair as he jumped into the car.
**
Jesus handed Emily the house key.
"I don't want to go in there by myself!" she hissed in a whisper, as if their mom would hear them.
"Just open the door and peek inside, if she's awake, run like hell. If she's not... run like hell anyway," he said. Emily nodded and stepped out of the car. She walked to the door and stuck the key in the lock. Jesus watched as she slowly opened it, peeked inside and then glanced back at him. He smiled brightly and gave her a thumbs up. She nodded and ran like hell inside the house. Jesus laughed as she sprinted out of the house, closed the door and rushed into the car.
"W-Was she asleep?" he laughed between breathes. Emily nodded and tossed her backpack into the back seat.
"Passed out on the couch. Some loser was sleeping on the floor naked," she said. Jesus laughed even harder as he pulled out of the drive way.
"Aren't cha glad we left?" he said cheerily. Emily smiled and nodded and Jesus sped off to drop his sister off at school.
*Emily's School*
"Emily!" Emily's friend Sarah yelled to her. Emily waved and walked over to her. Sarah was staring at the crappy car Jesus was pulling away in as Emily approached the public school doors. She heard Sarah giggle. She turned around and saw her staring at the car.
"Yeah I know it's a crap car but it's all we have. Why the hell are you laughing at it?" Emily asked, slightly hurt. Sarah turned back to her, her blonde hair falling into her eyes.
"Not your car. Your brother's just... hot," Sarah explained, giggling again as she tucked her hair behind her ears. Emily made a gagging sound. Sarah had thought that since the first day she'd laid eyes on Jesus. He knew and teased her about it all the time. When ever she had called the house, he'd talked to her for a few seconds just to make her blush and ramble.
"Oh God please don't. He likes this other girl anyway," she said, immediately biting her tongue.
"Jimmy likes a girl? What happened to Trisha?" Sarah asked, spitting the name Trisha as if it were poisonous.
"Trisha O.D.ed, remember? And he wants me to call him Jesus now," Emily said, remembering that day. Sarah looked at the ground.
"Oh... yeah that's right... hey didn't you catch them in bed toge-"
"LA LA LA LA! REPRESSED THAT MEMORY A LONG TIME AGO! LA LA LA LA!" Emily sang loudly, trying not bring the horrible image back. Sarah just laughed as the public school's bell ran, signaling for the start of class. As Emily walked up the steps she heard a car horn beep from behind her. She glanced back to see who it was. Jesus was sitting atop their car's hood as steam bellowed from underneath it. He waved cheerily as he stuck a lollypop in his mouth.
"Nothing seems to be getting him down, does it?" Sarah laughed. Emily smiled at her brother and waved.
"Naw... he's my saint... he won't fall."
"Pretty sweet. No more authority. No more Mary... "
"Oh that's right. Mary... she was a bitch," Tunny said, cutting him off. Jimmy nodded and laughed.
"Yeah... yeah she was. So, I left," Jimmy finished, feeling happy again. Tunny raised an eye brow at his buddy.
