St. Jimmy's Girlfriend, chapter 6
I stepped back. "Um, well, uh," was all I could get out. "Shit, "Tre said, "I'm sorry, Kae. That was stupid."
"No, it's okay."
"No, it's not. I mean, your boyfriend just died. I don't want to force you into anything."
"You're not forcing me into anything."
"Yeah but, it was still a bad thing to say."
"No it's not."
"I mean it's not the right thing to say at a time like this."
"I love you, too, Tre."
"You do?!"
"I mean as a friend."
"Oh."
He looked down at the ground. I smiled and put a hand on his shoulder. My stomach flopped. "Oh shit!" I said and ran back to the toilet.
We walked back to the living room. "Are you alright?"Adi asked. "Yeah,"I said,"Just morning sickness." She nodded. "Psst, Kaley," I heard from across the room. I turned around to see Joey beckoning me. I walked over. "You said you would tell Jakob today," he said.
"Do I have to?"
"You promised."
"Oh yeah. Okay, where is he?"
"In his room."
I followed Joey to Jakob's room and peeked inside. He was making a tower with a box of Legos. I looked at Joey. He nodded his head. I sighed and walked in. "Hey, Buddy,"I said. "Hi, Kaley," Jakob said not looking up. I sat next to him.
"Jakob, do you remember last night when your Mommy and I came in here last night?"
"Yeah."
"Could you stop building for a minute?"
"No."
"Please?"
"I can't stop. I need to finish this."
I looked at Joey standing at the doorway. He shrugged. I turned back to Jakob.
"I need to tell you something really important, Jakey."
"Okay."
"So can you please stop?"
"No."
"For me?"
"Sorry, I can't."
Think like a seven-year-old I thought.
"What if I tickle you?"
"No! Don't do that."
"I will if you don't stop."
"Hee hee. Okay, I'll stop."
"Alright, so you remember last night, right?"
"Yeah."
"Okay, well do you remember that me and your mom were crying?"
"Yeah. But Mommy said it was just sad things."
"Well, it's about those sad things.""
"Okay."
"Alright, we were crying about... Jimmy."
"Jimmy?"
"Yes. Ummm... Jakob, Jimmy's dead."
"No, it's okay."
